Alternately, I might want to go for the Tom Waits. Can't find a good picture of it, but I'm thinking particularly of his hair around the Bone Machine era. Not the haircut where it is like 6 or 7 inches long and standing almost straight.

The Josh Homme haircut is a fantastic idea.

So my hair's grown back out into the usual shaggy mess and it's time for a haircut. I'm strongly considering something in between these two styles. If I got the top one, I'd leave the sides buzzed as opposed to completely shaved.

Closest I've ever been:

Also hair thread I am thinking about cutting a foot off of my hair which will bring it to like, shoulder length but have no idea what to do with it from there. Is saying to the hairdresser "hey can you make it kind of androgynous" an acceptable thing to ask/will a decent hairdresser know how to do this?

Edit for a little detail: I have never gotten a haircut, really. I used to get this boy's haircut which around the age of 13 I was like "fuck this stupid shit" and just stopped getting it cut (except for the occasional inch off here or there). So, I really have no idea how to request a certain look, especially when I don't know how I want that look to, uh, look, because I've never really had a hairstyle beyond 'let it fall down and make sure it's not tangled'.

Zing, best thing to do when you don't know how to ask for a look is to take a picture. Find a picture of a guy with a haircut that you like and take it with you to the hairdresser. There are plenty of dudes out there with long hair, especially in the music industry, so do what I do and google it. (Long hair for men pops up quite a bit of things.)
