What kinda of computer do you have?
« on: 14 Jan 2008, 09:44 »

Hello, I am a new poster, looking for a place that not only was interesting QC is the definition of cool, awesome, kick-ass, etc.

I am curious to know about the rigs people use, I am somewhat of a techie and tehc talk is interesting to me...please tell my what kinda rig you have

Processor: AMD Athlon X2 5000+ 2.6ghz (clocked at 2.83 ghz)

Ram: 2GB ddr2 800 (pc 6400)

HDD:  2X Western digital 150gb raptors @ 10,000 rpm....7,200 prm Western digital 320 gb data bucket

screen: acer 22"

Keyboard: saitek eclipse II (illuminated)

I use this rig to to (attempt, more like it) flash...video editing, and gaming....I know the processor is lagging by todays standards, but its a dual core and I'm not grabbing a phenom any time soon!

Case: Antec 900

Thats funny, I was gonna build a new comp after taxes come back, and thats the case I am going with.
For now I just have two stock computers, a Sony Vaio desktop, and a Toshiba Satellite laptop.

The case is great, I would recommend that you use it, I have had no issues with it.   Its  tad loud with the fans at their highest settings, but at either med or low the sound is fine, but thats only if sound is an issue.

If your building one, this is a case to get

Case: Enermax Uber Chakra (This monster has a 10 inch fan)
CPU: AMD FX-74 (3.0 GHz, 2x1MB L2 Cache)
Mobo:  The only FX-74 mobo there is, it's an Asus, can't remember the name, but I can say it has two CPU sockets and 4 PCIx16 slots.
RAM:  2Gb DDR2-800 Mushkin
PSU: BFG 650-Watt
Video Card: PNY 7900 GS (once I get my tax returns, I'ma get an 8800 GT 512MB, maybe two)
Hard Drives: 160Gb, 120Gb, 80Gb, first two are Seagates at 7200.7 RPM (lowest seek times possible for a SATA drive), and the 80 is a Western Digital.
Monitor: 22" Westinghouse that I got on sale for $180
Keyboard: Microsoft brand, but it's actually my favorite part about the computer.  Quiet keys, good response, and it has a calculator button.

I use it for pretty much everything.

Case: Lian Li. Can't recall the model.

Mobo: Asus A8V. It's got a few years on its neck, but still mostly functional. I had to get a separate sound card though, something wrong with the onboard sound.

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 Processor 4000+

RAM: 2 GB DDR

Video: GeForce 6800 Ultra

Harddrives: Five, from 120 GB and up to 500, a total around 1.5TB. It's a mix of Western Digital and Samsung disks.

The PSU was expensive, but darn if I can remember what brand or model it was.

Keyboard: The crappiest keyboard Microsoft ever produced. It's a stop gap before I get something I actually like.

Mouse: Logitech MX Laser. I love it.

OS: Linux/Ubuntu.

If I was playing more games on it, it would be time to look for something better, but as primarily a multimedia unit it perform its job admirably. World of Warcraft is no resource hog, so it works quite well. I've considered getting a new gaming rig, but I'm not sure I game enough anymore that it would be worth the investment. Might be cheaper to get a console for that purpose. I feel somewhat dirty just for saying that...

All wonderful rigs, all made by do-it-yourselfers (you save money big time over Dell, Compaq, or any other pc manufacturer, doing it yourself you can build a rig priced at 800 bucks
and get things that are in 1,400-1,600 dollar rigs at stores, and you get better components than the more expensive ones, and no proprietary bios's and motherboards to boot!

I forgot my PSU: its a BFG tech 800watt monster gotta feed those 8800's ^^

Sorry, I'm finding my way around here and learning the tricks....I'll make a few mistakes and please, feel free to correct me, and If I am being an ass, let me know.

I'll use the Modify button for future edits, sorry

Keep the rigs coming, the more the merrier and the more people realize that building a rig of your own is easy and affordable, maybe dell will offer good equipment at a decent price, though I will never buy a rig from them!!!

Also have an older Pentium 3 box with 128 MB ram and an older 120GB IDE drive that serves as a linux box for music, it was my uncles old pile of crap...and well, its found new life with linux :P

I've got this:

Case:  Antex P180
PSU:  Random Japanese Electornics Store 500W
Proc:  Athlon64 X2 4400+
Mobo:  Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
Vid:  2x EVGA GeForce 7800GT
RAM:  2GB Corsair XMS DDR400
HD1:  WD Raptor 10KRPM 74GB SATA
HD2:  4x WD CaviarRE2 400GB SATA in RAID5
HD3:  2x WD 500GB USB2 External
Monitor:  Dell 2003FPW LCD
Speaker:  Klipsch ProMedia 2.1
Printer:  Canon Pixma Pro9000 wide-format photo inkjet

And then my laptop, and my old clunker laptop, and my ghetto Compaq ProLiant 380DL 2U rackmount server that I saved from a government dumpster.

Case: Antec Sonata II
PSU: Antec 450w Standard
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 3.2ghz
Mobo: Asus P5W-DH Deluxe
GPU: Sapphire X1900XTX w/512mb VRAM in Crossfire
APU: Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Fatal1ty
RAM: 2x 1gb Corsair Select DDR2-800
HD1: Western Digital 250gb IDE
HD2: Western Digital 500gb SATA-II
Monitor: Samsung Syncmaster 931BF
Speakers: Logitech Z-5500D

It's about 2 years old now, but it was almost literally the most powerful computer on the market back when I built it (that is if I'd bothered spending an extra 300 bucks for the E6800). And to this day the only thing I'm itching to replace is the GPU: a pair of 8800 Ultras would fit mighty fine in there.

MORE wonderful rigs!!!!  I was hoping to find guys with 8800's and power supplies that require splitting electrons to feed :| but these rigs here will do just fine...And  on a side note, I will be attending Showdown LAN 2008 at indianapolis...its a big lan-a-thon where you can win goodies for doing good at absolutley nothing (except games) i won an 8600 gts last time  :-P but I had the 8800's already so i gave it to my buddy who was destroyed in the competition (it was a Company of heroes competition) I can in second and missed my chance at 2 FX 74's and an ASUS mobo for them...but oh well, always next year!

Odly enough Microsoft didn't show up with thier new "gaming OS" or as we know it "SHITSTA!" (vista)... they claim its a gaming OS, but its slower than XP and we gamers don't take kindly to that...but I was wondering why they didn't show....I still havn't gotten an answer from them...

KEEP THE RIGS COMING!!!!!!!

(even if you got an old p4 with an AGP (or even worse) PCI based video card, don't shy away from telling us...the modest rigs make us respect our godly gaming rigs even more

here's what mine says on the side of the tower:

-Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600
-500 GB SATA II Hard Drive
-3 GB DDR2 Dual-Channel Memory
-NVIDIA GeForce 8500GT Video

-the monitor is some kind of gateway 19" widescreen affair
-the keyboard is also just a standard gateway model

If you didn't notice already, i bought my computer at Best Buy because i don't give a shit.

Conroe core e6600 oc'd to 3.4GHz on a tuniq tower HSF
Asus p5n-e SLi mobo
2Gig corsair dominator/2Gig Geil 6400 4-4-4-12
BFG 8800 320 OC2 (was going to SLi but the price != reflection of performance increase)
Raptor X 10k HDD for boot/500GB samsung spinpoint for storage
Corsair 620w PSU
crappy 5.1 soundcard
Coolermaster ammo533 case with custom NB cooling
2.1 speaker system, Razer barracuda headphones, Razer tarantula keyboard, 20" samsung syncmaster/14.9" Eizo monitor for IRC, razer diamondback plasma, razer mantis speed and control, M$ intelli 3.0.
Does what I want it to do and was fun to build. Some nice systems here :)

I run XP, my old pc now runs SuSE and your comment on vista is a fallacy in that Vista can easily out perform XP for gaming if you do more than insert a disk and click install. I know this, I have seen it happen on my friends PC (a 29 y/o ex-M$ employee who is now head server admin for one of the largest Scottish Football associations).

Hee hee. My main computer, at the moment, is pretty much the equivalent of Teh Geek Lord's "linux box for music". Mostly because that's all I do.

Lenovo Z61t. Can't not have a laptop in my line of work.

Maybe once I get out of college and hopefully get a nice job I'll build a high-powered rig that has a blue-ray / HD-DVD mega-burner or something.

In the belief that a PC should not be just a bunch of PCB and circuitry stuck into a black plastic box....I am making a case mod that will be made of plywood and some olive drab paint.  The case mode will be that of a World War Two era tank, the M4A4 medium tank, or the Sherman, I'm a big Coh'er and this rig will be done for Showdown Lan 08' but unfortunatly it will have my linux box stuck in it (I cannot afford to purchase another gaming rig) but a few bucks for a few sheets of plywood and some spray paint and some nails and plywood tracks... maybe it will make it look mean...maybe....and yes, windows vista is slower than XP, unless your overclocked and running next gen hardware in vista....xp is faster, plain and simple... but its gaining ground and will shotrly surpass XP, but I'll never own it  :-P
