The last time I went to San Francisco (December '06, holy crap), a bunch of people were in the BART station trying to sell books on using Dianetics to relieve stress. They had these little "stress tester" machines and they were really nice until I noticed something sketchy about the machines. It turned out that they just measured how much muscle tension your hands were putting out. I told them that and promptly got kicked out. It was fun!

This ancient picture is of me looking at the machine! My friend Mitch is sitting to my right. He got kicked out too.

Dianetics => Scientology. They hide the fact that they're scientologists until after they get you at least a little hooked.
Totally right on the machine, though, it just measures how hard you're squeezing. Which, of course, could be a rudimentary stress test machine, but hardly a very precise one.

Yeah, we were just looking for something to do. I didn't even notice the books until I was getting kicked out, and then I saw the large blazing "L. RON HUBBARD" at the top and laughed for a good 5 minutes.

I was unaware the photo was being taken- my friend brought his camera along because he is doing a set of interviews with campus staff (like the housekeepers/diner workers/etc) and apparently thought me standing awkwardly by the socks was a paparazzi-worthy picture
