the festival thread
« on: 25 Feb 2008, 08:31 »

So there are lots of threads about single festivals that people are going to, but that's really boring, because we don't all get to go to those.

What festivals are worth going to? do you go to festivals? if not, why not?

I usually just go to about one a year, usually rock werchter in belgium. This year they've got a pretty sweet line-up so far.

If prices aren't too ridiculous this is what I might end up seeing (not complete yet by far):

justice, radiohead, chemical brothers, beirut, sigur ros, band of horses, and the kooks.

http://rockwerchter.be/RW2008/site/index.asp

If that doesn't work out - maybe T in the Park in scotland.

I wish I could go to ATP.

W.G.T. (Leipzig DE)

Amphi (Koln DE)

M'era Luna (Hildesheim DE)

Infest (Bradford UK - don't think there's any bands announced for this yet)

Gordon Brown is going to be raping my wallet so hard for plane taxes this summer. Worth it though.

I'd sell a part of my body to go to Roadburn but I have finals right around that time and I can't afford to go across the Atlantic.

I've already got my Burning Man ticket but that hardly counts.

That looks interesting, I'll have to keep an eye on it to see who they confirm since it's so close to me.

Chinchillafest 6 in May is the only festival I know I'm definitely going to.

Last year's line-up was immense. Band announcements starting in March, apparently, so do stay tuned. Already got our tickets :)

The only festival around here is Monolith at Red Rocks. Last year was their inaugural year, and it was mostly local bands with acts you'd see at any and every other festival headlining. I think the Flaming Lips were the biggest band there.

Hopefully this year's (if there is one) won't be so bland.

Roadburn looks pretty good, but Electric Wizard and Om cancelled. I'm glad now that I didn't know they were going to play.

That being said, I'm in a festival mood this year. No plans, yet, though.

In the past few years there has been a prolifration of smallish corporate funded indie festivals here in Mex City!

This year i am going to the following so far

MX Beat (Marlboro) with MIA, Jarvis Cocker, Digitalism, The Cribs, Cold War Kids and a bunch of rather rad local bands

Indie-o-fest (DKNY [what] (such a lame name)) with Broken Social Scene and Apostle of Hustle and The National and a band i hate but that i've somehow seen live 5 times

There is another thing on the same day as above with Justice and Diplo and others but i've already seen Justice so i didn't even consider it.

Zero Fest (corporate sponsor unknown atm but i'm sure there is one) with the smashing pumpkins and My Chemical Romance and the Mars Volta (hat trick of suck) but also The Faint and Bright Eyes and My Morning Jacket and a bunch of good local bands including one in which my ex classmate is in.

There is also a festival of experimental music with Wolf Eyes and Melt Banana and ohmygod my ears are going to die

I will probably be checking out the P-fork Music Festival when it comes around, but nothing on that's been announced yet. I'm not sure if Intonation is totally dead, but depending on the line-up, if it gets rez'd I might hit that. Oh, and the Chicago Blues Festival. Always.

I'll probably try to go to Sasquatch again this year because the line up looks pretty awesome. I saw The Pixies and Modest Mouse headline it three or four years ago or so and it was a damn good time besides the inferno heat of the desert.

Make sure you see Battle Of Wolf 359 at CMAR, they are ridiculously good. Probably the best hardcore band in the UK now Army of Flying Robots are on hiatus and might well never come back. I'm also very jealous that you'll get to see Flagitious Idiosyncracy In The Dilapidation at OE, I'd love to see them live.

Yes I love Battle of Wolf 359!! It took me a while to get into their sound but it's all good now.. You been to CMAR before? I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to 3 days of crusty ear terror. I missed it last year but now is my time. A shame all of the french bands that came last year isn't coming again. Connect music festival. I'll probably be working at it again but 250 quid for the weekend ain't bad. Hopefully be going to belladrum (tartan heart) as well and definitely dunstaffnage music festival.

Belladrum was amazing last year. I only went for one day but the atmosphere was amazing, you could just wander about talking to randoms and drink with them and stuff it was ace. Connect was a bit shit cause i was all tired from working and didn't get to see many bands and it rained pretty much the whole time. It should be good though if it doesn't piss it down this year. Dunstaffnage is a new festival thats just been set up near where i live, to be honest the line up was shit last year but it was a good laugh anyway.

Sadly I've never made it to CMAR. I'd love to but I doubt I'll be able to persuade people into a road trip this year. I did make it over to Summer Slam a few years back but that's the only mainland fest I've ever made it to. I really need to work on that, I've never made it to Trashfest in the Netherlands either and that always looks great. I'm not sure I could handle OE though, days of non-stop grind would be overkill for me. Probably would have been worth it for Yacoepsae last year though, and I think Narcosis really pissed a lot of people off too which would have been funny.

I'm really kinda pissed the lineup for All Points West sucks so much. But there is a pretty good chance I'll get to go to Chicago again for the Pitchfork festival! Last year was fun!

I'll look at colleges too, because Northwestern seems really cool (in 2 ways, since its quite cold up there).

I'm going to be headed to Rothbury this summer, I think. Granted, there are more than a few artists playing whom I'd rather asphixiate myself than listen to, but there are also some really good ones. It's only about a two hour drive for me, too.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go flog myself repeatedly for thinking they'd sell out and make APW the better festival.

I think I might have to get to Supersonic in Birmingham this year. The line-up is frankly ridiculous:

Battles, Harvey Milk, Harmonia, Oxbow, Efterklang, Noxagt, Earth, Wooden Shjips, Thrones, Justice Yeldham, Dalek, Orthodox, Black Sun, Max Tundra, Einstellung, Guapo, The Owl Service, PCM, Fuck Buttons, Osaka Invasion ft. DJ Scotch Egg, Magnetophone... and cake stalls!

Despite the fact that the Baltimore version of the Virgin Fest isn't that far from me, I've managed to miss it both years.  Maybe this year I'll be able to go.

The first Lollapalooza was so damn close to my house that we charged people money to park in our lawn.  I had tickets (hooray for employment) but some of my roommates watched the show from our roof... and probably could see better than I could.

V Fest on Toronto Island. I went on the Saturday last year, and it was pretty darn good. Arctic Monkeys, k-os, MIA, Kid Koala, The Most Serene Republic, Bjork, and then there were the bands that I didn't like at the time, like Explosions in the Sky. And my friend and I met a weird kid on the ferry. Good way to cap off a day.

I am a little weary of going to Pitchfork this year, it doesn't seem to be quite as good as it could be or has been. Does anyone know of any quality festivals around the Midwest area that don't include the word Bonnaroo?

Part of me is really excited about the Great Escape festival in Brighton, given that it's on my doorstep and has bands like Operator Please, Black Lips, This City, XX Teens, These New Puritans and lots of other exciting bands...but then, I know that the venues they'll play at will fill up too early, and being disabled, I won't be able to get between venues in time to catch the people I want to see and will end up having to put up with crap like Joe Lean and The Jollocks if I want to be in the right place to catch something decent. They may improve the line up each year, but it's possibly the most poorly organised festival I've ever seen...

Latitude Festival!

I prebooked my ticket before they released the line-up and then was severely disgusted to hear them announce Franz Ferdinand.

Then they announced Interpol, Sigur Ros and Death Cab For Cutie and everything was right in the world. Also, Tim Minchin in the comedy tent :D

I'm right now filling out an application to be front stage security for the late night shift at rock werchter and werchter classic (the stooges, the police, and the scabs).

I am pretty excited, and I did security last year, so chances are good. Than I heard of another festival with Dinosaur Jr. and the B-52s. Cactus festival in Bruge. Which is ridicoulously cheap as far as festivals go.

And also the Sex Pistols.

I'll start looking into festivals soon, last year I was at Green Man and End of the Road, this year I might try and go to Green Man again because it was awesome. I want to get a couple of tickets for the friday music at Ladyfest because they have Slow Club playing and it's the only feasible time for me to see them.

Finally a decent Leeds/Reading festival line-up.

Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, Serj Tankian, Tenacious D and others.

Cue crying about St. Anger, Napster, RATM/Serj hypocrisy yadda. I'm excited, I don't care.
