Awesomely Danceable Songs!
« on: 28 Feb 2008, 21:35 »

Hey everyone. I am in a position where I am throwing and attending a lot of parties (it's called a frat.. go figure), but I get sick to hell of the same top 15 radio songs getting played over and over every night. So I am taking matters into my own hands and making a playlist for our next dance party.

I have gone through my iTunes library and taken out all the songs that I think will work well, but there aren't enough. So I am asking for your help. Here is the criteria for songs:

1) Danceable for people who have limited to zero rhythm.
2) Not too strange. I love strange music but the general public does not. Which is a damn shame.
3) If the song is vaguely familiar that is a plus! (i.e. things like Jay-Z singles off of Danger Mouse's Grey Album. Refreshing and Recognizable.)

Some of my own favorite picks for this just so you know where I am coming from:

The previously mentioned Grey Album
None Shall Pass - Aesop Rock (This is borderline too weird, but I'll be damned if the beat isn't one of the catchiest things I've heard in awhile.)
Jane Fonda - Mickey Avalon (Ok rap is always good these days. People tell me Mickey Avalon is shit. Mickey Avalon is hilarious. Plus this song has the line "Get your booty on the dance floor" which it undoubtedly will get people to do.)
Move Your Feet - Junior Senior (Well. Because. Just move your feet.)

As far as none rap/dance music that is still danceable goes, so far I have Love Will Tear us Apart - Joy Division and I am adding Burning Down the House and Psycho Killer by the Talking Heads. I will probably need more in that department.

Finally, I am sorry if there has been a recent dance music thread. I haven't seen one recently and this is pretty specific so I figured I'd make a separate topic. Also, to avoid necroing and or derailing other threads.

Gunther, for german parody techno.
Akcent, for french parody-of-itself techno.

And, a group favorite of our dance parties here,

Hm. I can't decide if people would laugh at the addition of Gunther tracks and then start dancing, or if they would castrate me and then put on their tired music. I know that I would dance to it, but I'm not sure about the other guys and the visiting ladies.

Also, I hear those throat singers really get the party started.

You could almost definitely get away with most of Ratatat's self-titled album, and I think people would be happy to dance to The Avalanches ... the Gimix mix that was on the Mediafire thread a while back was perfect, just 46 straight minutes of perfect party music that never stopped being new and different.  I can reup it if you like.

Also, anything Daft Punk ever did is probably fair game.

A few non-traditional tracks I stuck on a dance mix:

Casiotone for the Painfully Alone - "Scattered Pearls"
Call Me Lightning - "Nobody Dies"

It's a strange mix. The end gets really rocking (Call Me Lightning, Mando Diao, Sleater-Kinney..).

The B52s - The B52s -- If you are interested in New Wave or surf music, this straddles the two quite nicely. One of the finest records ever made and thoroughly danceable.

This. Lots. In fact, any B52s is a good idea. Also:

Ice Cube - We Had To Tear This Mothafucka Up
Wu-Tang Clan - Shame On A Nigga
Dead Prez - Hip Hop
Sleater-Kinney - You're No Rock 'n' Roll Fun
Lethal Bizzle - Uh Oh! (I'm Back)
R. Kelly - Ignition (Remix)
Punjabi MC - Mundian To Bach Ke
Warren G - Regulate
Dr Dre - Nuthin' But A G Thang
Skream - Tapped
Shystie - Woman's World (Gurlz Stand Up)
Texas Is The Reason - Back And To The Left
The Sonics - Roll Over Beethoven
Andrew WK - She Is Beautiful
Gravediggaz - Bang Your Head
Saves The Day - Shoulder To The Wheel
Ty - Ha Ha
Lady Sovereign - Cha Ching (Cheq 1-2 Remix)

If none of that gets you dancing then you have had your legs stolen, and none of it's very strange either.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Just for reference, The Knife is a little too weird for this sort of playlist (though I love it any other time), and if you recommend me rap please make sure that the beat on it is really interesting. Otherwise it is just more rap music.

Cadence Weapon has both Breaking Kayfabe and Afterparty Babies, the latter of which has most likely been released by now. Honestly, Rollie Pemberton's got some of the best stuff in hip-hop right now. It's better than even Clipse or Subtle by a country mile.

yes, Ratatat. the song 'El Pico' in particular. if you try to resist by not dancing, you'll actually explode.

also, go to the Mediafire Thread and download Why?'s album Alopecia because that shit is dance-a-tronic.

Time Warp from Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Because it's danceable to the point of absurdity.

Play it late, when people are drunk.
And Shout.
Like in Animal House. :]

Because they are fun.
And that is their only qualification.

I am pretty familiar with Ratatat I just hadn't thought of adding them to the list (most likely because my cds are at home) but thanks for reminding me! I checked out Cadence Weapon. I really enjoyed it, but I am worried that people wouldn't respond well to the crazy beats.

I had a party stop once because I had Black History Month sandwiched between Alive 2007 and Ratatat Remixes II.  It was freaky to watch 20 people all dancing around on chairs, the couch, etc. in my apartment, all simultaneously stop and bitch about the music.  Then Remixes II came on and all was good again.  My advice is skip DFA 1979 if girls who are not into drum and bass are involved.

!!!-"Me and Giuliani Down by the Schoolyard"
Might be too long, and not from their best album by all accounts, but really, really danceable and fun.

The Avalanches-"Live at Dominoes"
Sure "Frontier Psychiatrist" is great, but do you really want to tango?

Boris-"Electric"

Also, I'll fourth or fifth DFA/DFA 1979.  Pretty much all of You're a Woman, I'm a Machine makes you want to go nuts and shake your ass, even if, like me, you can't.

They've been building for a while over here but it took me by surprise as well, and it does look like they're going to blow up soon. I guess being Vice darlings is paying off. I was rather surprised to hear Battles featuring very prominently in Torchwood the other day too.

MGMT - "Electric Feel"
Soulwax - "KracK"
Justice - "D.A.N.C.E."             Popular but I don't think it's overplayed (right?)
Gogol Bordello - "Start Wearing Purple"                   I know you said no weird stuff, but this is just too great to not mention

Except maybe MGMT, all these artists have lots of other danceable tracks as well.

Solution: DFA 1979 Remixes!

I recently started a project called Inconsquential Dance Music. I essentially came to the conclusion that I own  too much awesomely danceable music and hardly any of the bands i listen to now have guitars. So i am purging myself of this music by churning out mix after mix of it. Here is volume 1!

I've had the whole 'killing a dancefloor' experience with DFA 1979. Watching a full dancefloor stop moving entirely is pretty demoralising...It wasn't until I slipped in Blood Brothers that half of them actually left, though...

But for other dancey stuff (some of this has already been mentioned):

Hot Chip / Ladytron / 'Kids' from the MGMT album / Bloc Party (flux/banquet/helicopter) / Brakes (All Night Disco Party) / Gossip / Datarock / Does It Offend You, Yeah? / FOALS / Klaxons / Prodigy / Simian Mobile Disco / The Sounds / Dizzee Rascal

I second Simian Mobile Disco, Klaxons, LCD Soundsystem, Ladytron (perhaps not, but worth a try), Ratatat, Justice, Daft Punk, Datarock, Girl Talk.

Concerning the DFA1979, Romance Bloody Romance might be the best bet

Chromeo (maybe a little too 80's, but could work)

Digitalism (Awesome.  Period.)

The Go! Team (might be a stretch but might work...songs like Grip Like A Vice)

Mando Diao (dunno if anyone mentioned, but some good stuff, relatively danceable?  Maybe not, but at least Down In The Past is.)

MSTRKRFT (Jesse F. Keeler of DFA1979 fame - new house electro stuff with Al-P.  Surprised it wasn't mentioned yet)

The Polish Ambassador (A little out there, but definitely some fun stuff haha.  You can download his latest album for free off his website last I checked: http://www.thepolishambassador.com/)

Ok here is the list so far:
Adults Only - Slick Rick ( I haven't decided whether or not this is a joke yet)
Andrew Fights for His Right to Party - Andrew WK vs. Beastie Boys
Around the World / Harder Better Faster Stronger - Daft Punk

Black Mags - The Cool Kids
Burning Down the House - Talking Heads
Change Clothes - DJ Danger Mouse
Cosmic Girl - Jamiroquai
D.A.N.C.E. (MSTRKRFT Remix) - Justice
DARE - Gorillaz
Deceptacon - Le Tigre
Dirt Off Your Shoulder - DJ Danger Mouse
Dirty Harry - Gorillaz
Don't You Evah - Spoon
Good Life (Ft. T-Pain) - Kanye West ( I am not sure of this song due to my extreme dislike for Tpain. I don't mind Kanye though.)
I (Mikey) Rock - The Cool Kids
Jane Fonda - Mickey Avalon
The Last Time - Gnarls Barkley
A Little Bit Cooler - The Cool Kids
Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
Make You Feel That Way - Blackalicious
Move Your Feet - Junior Senior
None Shall Pass - Aesop Rock
Numba One Stunna - Big Tymers
One More Time / Aerodynamic - Daft Punk
Party And Bullshit - Notorious B.I.G. (Ratatat Remix)
Psycho Killer - Talking Heads
The Seed (2.0) - The Roots
Shorty Wanna Ride - Young Buck (Ratatat Remix)
So Crispy - Kinfolk Kia Shine (Friends and I have an ongoing joke about this song)
So Rich, So Pretty - Mickey Avalon
Stomp - Young Buck, T.I. & Ludacris (Ratatat Remix)
Three Kings - Slim Thug, T.I. & Bun B. (Ratatat Remix)
Virtual Insanity - Jamiroquai
What's Golden - Jurassic 5

Any gaping holes or terrible songs there? Anything you all wouldn't dance to? Any suggestions for different from those artists? Thanks for all the suggestions so far. They have really helped.
