Once
« on: 06 Mar 2008, 07:52 »

The word "once" is almost impossible to search for, so I can't remember if there was a thread about this movie or not.

BUT! Has anyone else seen it? The soundtrack is effing amazing, but the movie itself is actually quite good. I caught myself smiling through most of the movie. It is low budget and was only shot in 3 weeks, but it is a very good movie and like I said earlier, the soundtrack is fantastic and I plan on buying it and some of the other stuff those two have collaborated on.

The film is awesome, but honestly I don't know how well the soundtrack would hold up without it. I should try that sometime.

The soundtrack is pretty great by itself.   With the exception of "Broken Hearted Hoover Fixer Sucker Guy."  That one feels a bit awkward.  The rest of the songs are fine.

The movie is absolutely wonderful.

I really enjoyed it a lot. The acting was very natural. I don't usually go for that type of music, but in the context of the film it worked marvelously, and the performance in the studio was pretty amazing to me.

The soundtrack removed from the movie loses a bit of magic, but there are still a lot of songs that I listen to.

I can see that happening. This part was really funny and I kind of want to know if they put the old lady on the bus on purpose or she just happened to be there. If it's the latter, that would be amazing.

Just saw it with my girlfriend over the weekend.  I really, really liked it.  An ex of mine described it as 'lost in translation with words' but on the whole I find it less pretensious, less artful and less mopey (not that I don't really like both movies).

Why do I prefer love stories where no one has sex so much over more conventional ones?

Great movie.  I'm told that in the scene by the beach where Glen Hansard asks Markéta Irglová "do you love him" in Czech, she responds "I love you."  I don't see why they couldn't get together in the end -- it's not like Ireland doesn't have indie labels and Hansard would have made an excellent step-dad. . . .

I'm a sap.

It was kind of obvious throughout the whole movie that she was still in love with her husband.  From the preview, it appeared like she was going to divorce him and get with Hansard's character.  I think it would have been better if it ended that way.  Especially since the scene both when they meet on the street and the bus scene, his character seems like he doesn't want his ex back.

You see, as I said before, I think the character's relationship perfect as it is as far as what I'd want from it.  I'm a sap but in that case this entails an appreciation for what might have been, could never have been etc. rather than necessarily requiring conventional consumation.  There's just something very true to life about two people connecting briefly and walking away.  Sad, but hardly tragic, just sad the way life is kinda sad sometimes, but not in a bad way.  I think it's very moving without being overly dramatic or weepy like some love stories (many old-fashioned ones, Romeo and Juliet, Tristan and Isolde) can be.  Also the ambiguity of feeling I find to show human beings at their richer and more interesting when compared with the romantic passion and its attendant cliches.  Hell, I like unconsumated romances, unclassifiable relationships and unrequited loves enough to even have enjoyed such things in my own life, though perhaps now that I have a 'normal' girlfriend it is easier to appreciate such things in hindsight.

I find nothing wrong with the movie as it is, it's still wonderful and touching and a step away from the traditional romantic cliches and I adore it for that.  I'm just a sucker for those kinds of things.  I agree with you to be totally honest.  Their relationship was beautiful, and the fact that they could walk away like that makes it all the more heartfelt.

Oh I totally get the forbidden love that can never be consummated thing.  In this case, I couldn't escape the feeling that the fact that the love wasn't consummated was less about the characters being stoic in the face of the irreconcilable fates, and more about the director being all "Look at me, I'm going to to give you an unconventional romantic musical where the characters don't make whoopy and end up with there ill-suited former significant others in the end."

I guess what I'm trying to say is when it comes to romances, I like the ones where the characters are so inflamed by their love they do rash things that they later come to regret.  Unlike this one where the affection is acknowledged but never acted upon.  Too much like real life :)

But that's totally just me.  And I still liked the movie.

I tried searching for 'once' too, and didn't even find *this* thread until I came into this section of the board.

Anyway, it's a beautiful movie!  The relationship between the two main characters is just lovely.  I think it was fantastic that they didn't sugar coat it and give it a 'Hollywood' ending.   I'm a sucker for sappy romances, but the 'more realistic' ones are sometimes better.

The soundtrack is great and I would even go so far as to say it may even be able to stand alone...or at least mostly.  I've seen the movie, so I suppose I'm biased.  The way they harmonize makes me melt and the lyrics aren't too bad either...but I suppose it means more to me after following the characters.
