Taking the next step

For awhile now my only "indie" style albums that I have owned have been:

Wilco - Been There Being There
Modest Mouse - Dead Before we Set sail We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
Ghostfiner - These Colors Run,
Chilli Willy and the Red Hot Peppers - Bongos Over Balham and I'll Be Home
Jake Shimabukur - Gently Weeps
Tom Waits - Closing Time and Rain Dogs

 I like a lot of different things but I was hoping you guys and gals could suggest something a bit less mainstream than my normal song choice. I like most things as long as I can understand the words that are being sung. I don't mind having no clue what the song means the first time I hear it but I do like to be able to pick out what words they are singing.



 Oh last thing I really love mariachi music and classical guitar if that helps.

I'd learn the names of the albums you own before you start getting new ones.

If you want less mainstream, I'd suggest the four successive Wilco albums after that one, because they get wackier and wackier as it goes on.

I don't know much about Tom Waits, although I do know that if you have an album of his that you consider mainstream you might want to get some more of his stuff.

I never said I think Tom Waits is main stream, it's just one of the non mainstream albums I own. I am just looking for more non mainstream albums that would gel with what I know I like - whether it is more extreme or less.

Well, with the Mariachi and general latin  influence, you may like these bands-

It's not necessarily the only influence present in these bands, but it's definitely there.

Darkness At Noon by A Hawk and a Hacksaw

i think that would fit into the mariachi-ish category. "darkness at noon" is the name of album, by the way.

also, if you like Tom Waits, i'd like to suggest the group Man Man. they are quite good.

You didn't deserve shit, and you corrected the album I wasn't talking about. I was referring to Wilco's album being called Being There, not Been There.

Listen to the latest Decemberists album. And Beirut's most recent.

Also, if you're willing to flaunt the 'being able to make out what they're singing' rule, White Rose Movement - Kick is a cracker.

Calexico's a cool band with a real mixed bag of fans.  There's a festival in Tucson, Arizona that has Calexico as the headliner every year, and it's this weird mix of indie rock and hippie kids.  At lots of their shows the band Mariachi Luz de Luna, a full 8-piece Mariachi band in all its regalia, is the opener.  Throughout calexico's set there are emmbers of teh Mariachi group that wonder on, take solos or sing backup, and leave.  It's pretty wild.

Tom Waits is absolutely amazing, one of the best musicians alive today. But he's not "indie." He's a mixture of folk, experimental, blues, roots-rock, etc.

The Dismemberment Plan- Emergency and I
It's a great segue between dancy, quirky indie-pop and DC-style post-punk/post-hardcore.

Also, if you want stuff with kinda folkish, classical-guitarish stuff, my favorite local band El Olio Wolof may be a good listen for you. You can find a live video of them here.

It SHOULD be an indie staple. Probably one of the best "dance-punk" albums ever recorded to tape, up there with the first Q and Not U record and a good chunk of Les Savy Fav's discography.

Another suggestion:
Of Montreal: Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?

If you get it, skip to track 7 wherein you may find the meaning of life, then listen to the album as a whole. But make sure you listen to track 7 first. It's kind of why music was invented.

Also, The Thermals - The Body, The Blood, The Machine. That album is immense.

Depending on what you like, Sigur Ros is great for haunting and atmospheric music that builds slowly and has lyrics in a made-up language invented by Icelanders.  Definitely doesn't have the whole pop song format, but is definitely not noisy.

Marquee Moon by Television is both noisy and pretty catchy.  Also classic.
