Well, I dunno.  I'd be tempted to label grime a sub-genre myself.

No, grime isn't a sub-genre of hip-hop. It comes from UK garage, it's just that the stuff that has become best known is the stuff closest to hip-hop. It is definitely a different scene with a different background though.

Ugh, yeah, Consolidated was too preachy by half for me.  Their fans' complaints that their t-shirts weren't as cheap as Fugazi's was pretty funny, though.

Must have been their tickets. Fugazi never had t-shirts.

Could be.  I sold that album a long time ago, so my memory's hazy at best.  I just remember, "We're not...  We're not Fugazi.  We're not Fugazi.  They're way harder than us."

You might like P.O.S. He is a rapper from Minneapolis who is in the Doomtree collective, and I think you'll like his anger. He also has a punk band called Building Better Bombs. My favorite song from his sophomore album Audition is Bush League Psyche-Out Stuff but I can't find it. Thus, listen to P.O.S. is Ruining My Life- just remember the singing stuff is sampled or stolen or something.

P.O.S. is one of my favorite hip-hop artists. My other favorite is the Heiruspecs, another Twin Cities group. A little less angry, but live drums, bass, and keyboards give it a nice live sound added to 2 MC's throwing out solid lyrics. Check out 5ves, Get Down, or Position of Strength, as these were the best I could find on youtube.

Khar, have you ever listened to Buck 65? This is one of those tracks that I think s really great. Not sure whether it fits in as far as hiphop goes. But it's basically a story, and it's told voer a beat. Umm... Buck 65, Unstoaapble Sam

(*reallly I'm kinda drunk and am not entirely sure anymore what this track sounds like but I did upload it at some point so it's gotta be good right?)

[edit] also, roots manuva is pretty great, as is hell nasty so screw you dude who's hating on it

Heiruspecs

I just saw them last Thursday! My birthday was Tuesday though, so I kept getting birthday shots, so I don't remember much of it. I woulda recommended them too, but I didn't think Khar would like them as much as the other two.

Could be. From my experiences though, I have a bunch of friends who don't like hip-hop much but do enjoy Heiruspecs, and they're one of the first bands I usually recommend to people who want good hip-hop. Also, they're really fucking good live. I've seen them at least 5 times by now and every time's better than the last.

Before it??? That's on their first album...

Khar, for Beastie Boys, I suggest you get the albums Check Your Head, Ill Communication and Hello Nasty.
How can you not mention Paul's Boutique?!?!  It's top three hip hop albums of all time!

Also, Khar, you're an idiot.  Music is two things: Sound and time.

Also, listen to DJ Format, esp. his tracks with Abdominal on the mic.  They are great.

Pretty much the only rap I enjoy listening to is TTC (maybe because I don't understand him? I am unsure), although I grew up with 90s era Dre and Snoop on MTV so that is pretty hardcore engrained into my subconscious.

Also if you're not into rap you might like dubstep? I enjoyed the heck out of Burial and a bunch of other dubstep fellows  I downloaded.

Ok this video is absolutely shit but you'll get to here the song.

Along the same vein as Dose-One and Boom Bip...as in contains Dose-One and is on the same label as both of them, I present cLOUDDEAD.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuDHR2OY5h8&feature=related

To get a taste of them live check out their video of Sound Of A Handshake.

And also from Del The Homosapiens label Hieroglyphics, Souls Of Mischief.

Awesome bass line + horns + great lines = best single hip-hop track I know of.

Arrested Development - Mr. Wendal

I don't think hip-hop music is for him, its designed to be repetitive and danceable.  True hip-hop just isn’t for him, and he isn’t going to enjoy anything that follows the basic formula of hip-hop, especially stuff that is designed for an MC to flow over. He enjoys break beats, obviously due to his affinity for massive attack and portishead, but break beats that have the same beat for every verse and a slightly altered beat for choruses isn’t going to tickle him the right way.

If he wants to enjoy break beat, then give him some representation of that, I thought the RJD2 post was the closest thing to hip-hop he can get behind, although I’m not sure he listened to it.

While, these are not hip-hop in normal sense, these are Hip-Hop DJ's and Producers working free of making music for MC's to rhyme over.  Some of my favorite representations of what a DJ can do with a break beat.

Royksopp - Eple
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jl4rwMZWATs

DJ Shadow - Organ Donor
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRS8cM4lyKY&feature=related

Blockhead - The Art of Walking
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdPtzhnwKSs

Lovage - Stroker Ace
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfplM0G0Fzk

Ohh yeah, well, I cant recoment Hip-Hop without reccomending Deltron.

Deltron 3030 - Turbulence (Del tha funky Homosapien, Dan the Automator, Kid Koala)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wa9vZDOY-Y

If you dont like, so be it.  At least you listen to music, and not the radio.

I am a fan of a lot of music, and there is very little I won't at least give a chance.  That being said, Khar, keep in mind that "hip-hop" is a very broad phrase in terms of music, especially in this day and age: saying that will get you answers ranging from hardcore rap to trip-hop to electronica/dance with rapping overtop.  That being said...

Gym Class Heroes: As Cruel As School Children
Clothes Off!!
The Queen and I
Scandalous Scholastics

See also:
Snoop Dogg (pre-2000, preferably)
Dr. Dre (esp. Chonic 2000 and 2001)
Kanye West (College Dropout, Late Registration, and Graduation)
Lupe Fiasco (Food & Liquor)

You said you didn't like the Beastie Boys songs that got linked earlier; I'd like to have one album to link you to, but all of their albums are a healthy mix of the more heavy, metal/rock-esque tunes and their more rap-esque songs.  The latter you may like.  Some of them include Sure Shot, from Ill Communication, and Paul Revere and Brass Monkey, both off License to Ill.

I'm tired as hell, more to come possibly.  Also maybe links for the above.

Eh...Immortal Technique repeats the same stuff OVER AND OVER AND OVER again and often the stuff he says just sounds idiotic.  He has some good stuff but a lot of the time it's just annoying to listen to.

Khar, this is pretty much cheating, but here: http://xplosif.net/trash/mp3s/Slayer%20%26%20Ice%20T%20-%20Disorder.mp3

After reading all of these great underground selections (Doseone & Boom Bip FTW!), I'm a little surprised noone's suggested Prefuse 73...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrpMKKO2e6E  <--Prefuse 73 featuring Ghostface Killah & El-P - Hideyaface.

The video sucks, but the song is awesome.  If you're looking for hip-hop with melody, Prefuse is the MAN.  Ghostface Killah at his best since Wu-Tang in my opinion...

Going in a completely different direction from what you've so far found listenable here. Repetitive, simple beat + fantastic old school blues samples + best flowing rapper I've ever heard, regardless of his whiteness - gangsta stereotype - overproduction = great hip hop without the downfalls of it

Lets see if you like anything in this vein at all. Also, don't let the political content turn you off. The lyrics are strong as fuck.

"Talking about you don't support a crackhead
What you think happens to the money from yo' taxes
Shit the governments an addict
With a billion dollar a week kill brown people habit"

I think I might have to get Brother Ali's album, this shit is awesome.

I was going to post some Spank Rock, whose debut is one of my favorite rap records. But I forgot. Great party music.

My house-mate is way into Brother Ali, Sage Francis, Lyrics Born & Atmosphere.  I like what I hear when he plays some, but even though I went on a Sage Francis kick a while back I generally don't think about playing them all that much myself anymore.

Now, this is alright. Because of the MUSIC. Still a bit simple though, but I can imagine listening to this maybe when I am stoned.

I think the problem, as people before have said, is what you call music.  In my mind, Hip-Hop IS music, just a different kind.  Its music that tends to have a strict emphasis on lyrical content and flow.  ie: the MC IS the music.  The backing beat is just that.  Background.  Its not like a "traditional" band that expects to put multiple peices of music together to create a song.

If you go in to rap or hip hop expecting band songs in the same sense as a rock/metal/whatever band, you will be dissapointed, because they arent there.

If you go in with an open mind, and listen for the lyrical content then you might be surprised at what you find.

side note:Body Count. Shitty video, but one of their better songs.

No, I know it's music. I'm not that much of an asshole. I just find the repetition of one unchanging beat over and over to be utterly tedious and without interest. Your comment about bands doesn't make any sense. I listen to shitloads of EBM, dub, post-industrial, whatever, and those people can put together decent songs without being a band.

As for lyrics, I can't even work out what the dudes are saying in a good few of these tbh. Lyrically, the ones I can hear haven't really impressed me, except for the cLOUDEAD song someone posted I think on the last page, which incidentally, I liked a bit. A lot of it seems pretty blatant and tired. "Help, help I'm being oppressed!". Not that I'm sure these words aren't laden with truth, but man, I already read left-wing blogs, I don't need that shit bashed around with a rhyming dictionary and set to a crappy beat as well.

And Body Count are a hardcore band. WTF?
