So, I think all hip-hop is shit. I have in the past taken many recommendations from people for hip-hop I might like, and it has all ended in failure. But I do not know why! I like electronic music! I have no objections to samples or people just talking over music! I cannot really understand my antipathy to this whole genre, and I do not like to think it is because of racisms.

Hip-hop artists I can remember that I have listened to and found severely lacking include Public Enemy, Cypress Hill, NWA and lots of others I can't remember.

I want you guys to convince me otherwise. Get me into rap. Even if you fail, my reviews of the things you make me listen to should be pretty hilarious/insulting/borderline racist (delete as appropriate).

I like dub. King Tubby, Scientist, Keith Hudson. I also have been known to like some grime. Dizzee Rascal and JME have both made the odd song that tickles my fancy. More off-topic, I am also a big fan of EBM, some acid house, etc.

Khar, for Beastie Boys, I suggest you get the albums Check Your Head, Ill Communication and Hello Nasty. These are the albums where they spent most of thei time working on live instrumentation to rap over and experimenting, there's plenty of kooky jams (IC has this weird string section interlude at one point, it's quite bizarre, especially considering the context) and even a couple of hardcore tracks scattered around there somewhere.

Presumably you've already been recommended Eminem? Tell me yes or no because I want to recommend you some of his based from that.

Remind me, are you British? Because if you're British, then I can't recommend Council Estate Of Mind by Skinnyman any higher. Also, again mostly if you're British but you have better chance of getting this album even if you're not, is Who Needs Actions When You've Got Words? by Plan B. And if you're turned off by the first track, be sure to let it finish, because his way of doing things will become very clear from the third or fourth verse, I forget which one it is.

So anyway, let's try a couple of things. Check out TEPR's album "En Direct de la Cote". It's mostly electronic, but with some rap (mostly French) in it. If you don't mind that then maybe check out some of French rappers' TTC's stuff, especially "3615" and their collaboration with Modeselektor, "Dancing Box".

Basically what I am trying to do here is think of some electronic-like rap, and also check out if you like rap better when you can't understand what they're going on about. To this end, hopefully you can't speak French.

If that goes well (or maybe even if not) maybe check out edIT's latest album, "Certified Air-raid Material." I enjoyed it quite thoroughly, and the music in it isn't the typical kind of "something with a beat that people can rap over" fare.

As an addendum, Z-Trip's album "Shifting Gears" is pretty good.

along these lines, I have a great album by Organism 12 which is a German rap group. somehow, I enjoy it more because I have no idea what they're saying, they just sound really pissed off about something. not usually a rap person either.

please, don't waste your time with Hello Nasty. two good songs tops. Now, Check Your Head or Paul's Boutique are two unbelievably solid records that require your full attention.

I'd recommend some Del Tha Funkee Homosapien. You might also appreciate Aesop Rock, although he's a bit hard to get into.

Also, I think Immortal Technique's ideological bent might make him something you could dig.

This was a lot more like it. The first track reminded me a bit of those Fear Factory songs that got remixed by rappers. Still pretty boring though, but closer to the mark by far. The second one was alright as well, but, well...man, it just felt like reading a left wing blog but someone had stuck a limp beat behind it. Some of the lines in it genuinely elicited a smile from me ("they think apartheid is a new type of headache cure") and the sampling stuff at the beginning and end was kind of alright. I did not skip ahead in these tracks at all, which I will admit I did past the two minute mark in the last two. I cannot see myself listening to these tracks for fun, but I would not object if they were played in a club. The lyrical themes were closer to the mark. I am probably not going to be that into stuff about sex and guns (I think that's what at least the second one in the first lot was about).

More like this! I liked this track! The synth/turntable/whatever interludes provided some much needed interest that kept the whole thing pushing along that the other tracks lacked. The lyrics and music actually seemed appropriate for each other. There was a dubby kind of vibe and the beats were much more to my liking. I actually enjoyed this track!

What really got me into rap lately was Murs. He did some work with 9th Wonder (producers) that I personally really love. He was an independent artist so his songs do not sound over-produced (he is now signed to Warner Bros).

I thought you'd call me out for cheating with Consolidated since they really were basically an industrial band with rapping. Their extremely left-wing political stance could get a bit annoying (I really, really hate the song "You Suck", but that's more the Yeastie Girls' fault and the fact that every fucking goth-industrial night ever used to play it every fucking week when it came out).

What was very interesting about the band is that during concerts, they would pass out microphones to let audience members debate or otherwise talk about the subjects they addressed in their songs, which Skinny Puppy never did, even if they were the better of the two bands, and you had to pay close attention to notice that all their fucking songs were about animal rights.

They came out with three solid EPs before that album. They were a lot harder.

My point is, Fight for Your Right was their song that solidified their style, but it was ironically made to make fun of that specific style of music. In a way, because it got so popular, they 'sold out'. The notes on Sounds of Silence actually claim they think the song sucks. But yeah, you're right, there isn't that much hip hop before it.

Maybe some Massive Attack would do something? It's hip-hop (tend to fall under trip-hop), and a large portion of there songs don't involve rapping at all, but a number do. Elizabeth Fraser from the Cocteau Twins sang on a few of their tracks. Mad Professor, who's heavily involved with dub, has collaborated with them as well.

Holy shit, yeah. I can't believe I forgot Dalek. Ever Somber. That song is kinda odd in that it sounds like he's rapping over My Bloody Valentine; the rest of that album, Absence, sounds like he's rapping over Merzbow. Noisy as shit, it is.

Also, none of them are white, if that's good to know.

I wouldn't call Massive Attack hip-hop, I just thought they might be a decent stepping stone. And isn't only one of them white? And Dizzee Rascal definitely isn't white.

Did you listen to the Cadence Weapon track?

Maybe try Old Dirty Bastard, just because he's pretty distinctive from most other rap out there, so it's possible it might appeal.

First song seemed like it might be good right at the start but it never engaged me at all. The guy going 'crying' in the background seemed to overpower everything as well. Second one, I was totally meh on, well, not totallly, a nice intro, but then just the same boring drag it's been with some of the other songs here. The last one I didn't like at all. I couldn't understand a word, and it sounded like an intro that went into an interlude that went into an outro. Didn't really seem like a song. I kept waiting for it to kick in, but it didn't. Next.

This was interesting, liked the samples, but again it didn't really feel it was going anywhere. The turntable stuff at the end was kind of cool, but again, can't ever really imagine sitting down and choosing to listen to this for pleasure.

Okay, the Beastie Boys tracks just sounded like Rage Against the Machine B-Sides to me, and I don't really like rage against the machine. The J5 one sounded completely generic. The Glukoza track, on the other hand, was pretty cool. It weirdly reminded me of Gogol Bordello, and the video wasn't bad, if a bit obvious. I might like it more if I could understand the lyrics...but then again maybe I would like it less.

I really don't know anything very much at all about hip-hop, but the more I listen to it, the more I become convinced that French is really the form's natural language (bearing in mind that I can't speak French). To my ear there's something about the combination of the more mellifluous rhythms of French with the hard beats of hip-hop that just works. I'd highly recommend getting the soundtrack to the seminal film La Haine. Sure, it's getting a bit long in the tooth, but both the film and the soundtrack album are still absolute classics.

You might like P.O.S. He is a rapper from Minneapolis who is in the Doomtree collective, and I think you'll like his anger. He also has a punk band called Building Better Bombs. My favorite song from his sophomore album Audition is Bush League Psyche-Out Stuff but I can't find it. Thus, listen to P.O.S. is Ruining My Life- just remember the singing stuff is sampled or stolen or something.

Another one I don't think is boring is Mr Lif. If you like any of his songs, Red October would be the most likely, I think. Or maybe Return of the B-Boy.

That's about how I feel about the Glukoza track. I have their album lyring around somewhere. Maybe I'll upload it to the thread that cannot be named.

I would recommend some french rap, but I wouldn't know what to show.
