I like Bright Eyes' music, but in honesty, Conor Oberst's unnecessary uber-vibrato can really piss me off sometimes. It's not even an endearing way of singing, like Dylan's talk-singing. It's just annoying.

I'm so glad he hasn't been using that too much.  Though I did find it funny when he started to get really bad on 'the Big Picture', the song cut out.  Its almost as if he knew...

That's the thing I like least about some Bright Eyes fans and most Bright Eyes haters: they're so stupid they don't realise that he is aware of the persona he presents to the world and does not always like it or take it seriously.  I mean, the fake interview on Fevers and Mirrors should be proof enough for anyone who isn't functionally retarded.

I love older Bright Eyes, but although I have tried several times, I've never been able to get into anything he did after Lifted. Once he went country-fried I switched to Jason Molina and I have never been happier.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure my favorite Bright Eyes stuff is only a tad better than my least favorite Songs: Ohia stuff. Oberst wishes he could write an album as terrific as Lioness or Ghost Tropic.

Indeed.  I think "False Advertising" is probably one of the best responses to the critics he could have written.

For a song, I was bought
Now I lie when I talk
With a careful eye on the cue cards
Onto a stage, I was pushed
With my sorrow well rehearsed
So give me all your pity and your money now
All of it

(We used to think that sound was something pure)

But if I could act like this was my real life
And not some cage where I've been placed
Well then I could tell you the truth like I used to
And not be afraid of sounding fake
Now all everyone's listening for are the mistakes

I mean, the fake interview on Fevers and Mirrors should be proof enough for anyone who isn't functionally retarded.

I've known several Bright Eyes fans who own that album and weren't aware that Todd Baechle was actually the person in the interview. Some of them cited the interview as one of the reasons he was so great. When I tried to explain, one person was slightly embarrassed, one person just said "oh" and shrugged it off and the rest reacted with total disbelief, one girl going so far as to call me a liar.

Bright Eyes fans can be just as ignorant (naive?) as Bright Eyes haters.

yes.

besides that, why judge the man's work on largely irrelevant things, like the behavior of his fans, people he has no contact with or personal control over? music is meant for listening to and thinking about and enjoying, primarily on a personal level. why let other idiots ruin something that could be enjoyed? no, i'm not saying you necessarily would enjoy it without those fans, but the existence of idiots is not a good reason to hate. jesus was not responsible for the crusades; nietzsche was not responsible for the holocaust.

seriously, if something is pleasing, for whatever reason, end of story. even if the creator him(her)self is a complete idiot, obnoxious, a horrible person, that sometimes still does not keep them from creating something very worth your time. besides the fact that there are various strata of enjoyment, and just because one might value highly intellectual or philosophical subject matter the majority of the time does not mean that some quality ass-shaking is never in order.

Did you just compare two of the worst acts of brutality in human history to annoying fans?

Anyway, I think Bright Eyes is pretty enjoyable as long as you don't take it all too seriously. I've never been to any of his shows, or really hung out with his fans, so I guess I'm kind of insulated from any annoyance from that direction.

I still get chills during the part of the last song on Lifted when he talks about waking up in a hospital bed.  And I'm pretty sure I would even if I didn't know it's a true story.

Really that whole song is basically perfect.

It's actually somewhat funny to me that I didn't buy or listen to Lifted until mid-2005 because I had heard a couple of friends who had been fans of his since '98 (which is when I started listening) say that it was his "sell-out album" when I think that it's basically the exact opposite of that; every single note on that damn record sounds like exactly what he wanted to do, and it's the first album with many moments where he actually sounds like he's having fun.

CAN I GET A GODDAMN TIMPANI ROLL indeed.

it struck me as probably not the best way of making the point after i posted it. and no, i was not comparing them, i was simply trying to illustrate the concept. and im not sure if i properly invoked godwin's law; i do believe i would have had to compare the actions of some individual to the morality of the 3rd reich.

I like a lot of Cassadaga but honestly it just doesn't have that magic touch that all his others do.  I can't pinpoint exactly why I think it's his second worst album (behind Digital Ash) but that's where it lands in the ranking system for me.  I'd probably go:

Lifted
Every Day and Every Night EP
Fevers and Mirrors
I'm Wide Awake It's Morning
Letting Off the Happiness
Cassadaga
Digital Ash

I like Cassadaga for the most part, but I think the problem is that it looses direction somewhere along the way. It starts out telling a compelling story but somehow ends up just being a collection of pretty good songs.

Who's Mandy Moore?

Pretty sure she was in Saved, which in some respects is a pretty funny girl if you know anyone really religious.  Pretty sure she's a pretend singer too.

Bright Eyes is ok but when you're surrounded by people who make Bright Eyes jokes it's hard to defend them.  I ended up getting sick of the way he sings, I could never listen to him for more than a couple songs at a time.  My dad loves Bright Eyes, but he loves anything as long as it's soft and wouldn't understand the music scene unless I spent an hour explaining it to him.  The only Bright Eyes song I can listen to now is Lover I Don't Have to Love, it was the first song of his I heard.

Hey, how about Badly Drawn Boy? Dude's pretty similar to Bright Eyes, but more piano-driven, and a lower baritone voice. I prefer him, actually.

Aside from his haircuts there is really nothing about Conor Oberst that fits any of the definitions of "emo".  He's not Rites of Spring emo, and he's not new-emo.  I mean if Bright Eyes is emo then I guess the Violent Femmes and Neutral Milk Hotel are too.

"Emo haircuts" are no more ridiculous than mohawks, mullets, or any of the dozens of other music-associated haircuts that exist.  In fact, on most girls and some guys, they look fine.  People make fun of "emo hair" as much as they do "hair metal hair" and srsly people, the latter is so much worse.
