I buy insane numbers of CDs, and would buy more if I didn't try to control myself at least sometimes...
I have a couple of thousand classical CDs and LPs collected over 45 years and covering all periods from Hildegarde to contemporary, so I can be reasonably selective with new classics. Recent purchases:
Kronos playing Berg's Lyric Suite in the first recording of version with vocal part.
Bach Cantata 106 et al sung by Actus Tragicus (one of whom was a school friend).
The organ of Romsey Abbey, played by someone I know from another forum.
Dubois and Liszt choral pieces, because I was singing the Dubois and like the Liszt.
Bartok - Bluebeard's Castle, from the Opera House my daughter-in-law sings at.
A disk of improvised music for organ and trumpet from Hamburg.
Plus, my son just sent me a dozen records of Glenn Gould playing mostly Bach, because he got given the complete Gould box.
In Rock and Pop, my collection is much thinner: Elvis, Beatles, McCartney, Stones, Souixsie, U2, Marianne Faithfull (naturally!), Jamie Cullum, and a few other oddments. So I've been trying to fatten this up with more recent stuff that seems interesting to me, as well as filling some older gaps. Recent purchases:
Agalloch - Ashes against the grain
Mercury Rev - Deserter's Songs
Explosions in the Sky - Earth is not a Cold Dead Place
Helios - Eingya
Mogwai - Happy songs for Happy People
Slint
Alan Parsons Project - Stereotomy (I am interested in the use of some Ambisonic technology in the making of this).
And some humour:
Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Complete songs of Tom Lehrer
