We Pay In Cigarettes
« on: 21 Jun 2008, 07:03 »

The purchases thread is back (mods, please sticky this).

For all the new guys, This is where we talk about albums we have actually bought and now own. Preferably by actually going to a record store but I'm not judging anyone. We can also talk about record stores but that's up to you.

Rules are simple:
-Don't be an asshole

I'll go first:

Om - Live in Jerusalem LP
Copy no. 2273/3100

Quote from: Southern Lord
In December of 2007 the mighty duo that is OM made a pilgrimage to Israel to play for its people. Their pinnacle performance unfolded at 4 Aristobolus Street in Jerusalem the site of Uganda Records.

The band played for over 4 hours on this evening! The tracks: "Flight of the Eagle" and "Bhimas' Theme" were captured and the transmission of these recordings were flown back to the United States where the vinyl lacquers were made by Bob Weston .

Southern Lord in cooperation with OM present you the listener with this 180 gram black vinyl transcendental offering: OM-"Live at Jerusalem". Limited to 3,100 machine numbered copies. $20 each.

Boris-"Smile" CD+DVD (special 2 disc set LTD. edition)
Copy no. 2053/3000

Quote from: Southern Lord
The wait is over! With this brand new studio album from Boris' the group plays deeply intense blistering psychedelia with mammoth hooks and truly innovative song-writing. Smile is a reinvention of dark heaviness. Smile presents a new sound from Boris which represents everything that is RIGHT NOW.

Boris hope "this is going to be a new experience for everyone beyond music 'Features collaborations with special guests: Stephen O' Malley (sunn0))), KTL), and Michio Kurihara (Ghost, White Heaven, The Stars). The Southern Lord version is drastically different than the version of Smile released by Daymare records in Japan. The main difference between the Southern Lord version and the Daymare version is the mix of the actual songs themselves. Where the songs on the Japanese version have a more electronic or noisy-psychedelic vibe, the North American/European version here features a heavier more straight-forward rock aesthetic. Its truly remarkable how the band consciously have set out (and achieved) to make two completely different sounding versions of the same album. It is a testament to their continual, endless well-spring of creativity! The Southern Lord version also features a track that has never been heard by anyone! : "You Were Holding an Umbrella". We purposely left this song off any promo versions in order to prevent the entire album from being leaked online.

Besides this phenomenal album we are offering a exclusive bonus dvd to our mail-order customers. The DVD contains videos for the songs: "Statement" , My Neighbor Satan", and "Pink". It is packaged in a 2xcd case with the Smile cd and has a individually machine-numbered sticker on the front. Only 3,000 were manufactured.

Both bought yesterday at Uganda.

My latest purchase was Daft Punk's Discovery.  This was about a month ago.  Unfortunately, I have no more money for a long time since I just got a new bike.

However, I just listened to some Miles Davis albums that I got for Christmas for the first time.  They are Cookin' With The Miles Davis Quintet, Workin' With the Miles Davis Quintet, and Relaxin' With The Miles Davis Quintet.  Cookin' includes Miles' and Coltrane's absolutely ace rendition of Sonny Rollins' "Airegin".

Interesting since my new purchases just arrived yesterday:

Thing-a-Week box set (all four) and smoking monkey by Jonathan Coulton
Tales Of Camelot by Wyllow Ravenscroft
Silent Star Night by Brule & Airo

The above were purchased from CD Baby

Also The High Kings and Celtic Thunder CDs.

These were purchased from Amazon.com

lately i've been buying way too many cd's online:

beat happening-jamboree
beat happening-music to climb the apple tree by
mission of burma-onoffon
mission of burma-the obliterati
mission of burma-the horrible truth about burma
mission of burma-signals, calls, and marches
shellac-excellent italian greyhound
shellac-terraform
the flirts- ten cents a dance
love & rockets- earth, sun, moon
love & rockets- seventh dream of teenage heaven
sparks-kimono my house
mclusky-mclusky do dallas
mclusky-the difference between you and me is that i'm not on fire
heavenly-operation heavenly
daft punk-alive 2007
daft punk-discovery
the sonics-here are the sonics
underworld-1992-2002
thurston moore-psychic hearts
v/a-new york noise
feist-the reminder
xtc-skylarking
france gall-1968
vitalic-ok cowboy
flight of the conchords-the distant future ep
esg- a south bronx story
orbital-orbital 2

and i'm a geek for actually sorting my list by band. (it would be even worse if they were also in alphabetical order)
and at the time these were purchased i was really obsessed with mission of burma. not that there's anything wrong with that.

Wait what? There is nothing at all wrong with alphabetical order. It's only logical since you don't have nearly enough dimensions to sort by sound and genre is just too fuzzy in most cases. If you're going to sort at all it's clearly the best method.

I suppose there's some charm in digging around for an album you want to listen to and stumbling upon something you haven't heard in forever and putting that on instead. But I guess I just like to be able to find what I'm looking for without issue.

Umm.. As for the thread I don't think I've bought anything since The Mountain Goats' Heretic Pride when it came out. I haven't had a job for over a year though and I really need to get employed again since I miss the feeling of buying music and then discovering it when I get home and that feeling of anticipation you get in betwee.

Hmm, buying...

Well, the last thing I bought was Silver Mt. Zions "This Is Our Punk-Rock," Thee Rusted Satellites Gather + Sing,

I also need to get back to the record store and buy Moth, Mick Turners solo album. Too bad it takes me like, a fucking hour to get there.

yes, it's a logical way of actually keeping cd's/records organized, if you're the sort of person that cares about that.
i just think alphabetizing a list in a post is silly.

Today I went into town hoping to buy Closer by Joy Division, and came back with second hand copies of Loveless and Primal Scream's Dirty Hits. I would have gone home with a ton of 2nd hand vinyls, but my friends barred me from looking at them, lest I spend an hour in the shop again.

I buy insane numbers of CDs, and would buy more if I didn't try to control myself at least sometimes...

I have a couple of thousand classical CDs and LPs collected over 45 years and covering all periods from Hildegarde to contemporary, so I can be reasonably selective with new classics.  Recent purchases:

Kronos playing Berg's Lyric Suite in the first recording of version with vocal part.
Bach Cantata 106 et al sung by Actus Tragicus (one of whom was a school friend).
The organ of Romsey Abbey, played by someone I know from another forum.
Dubois and Liszt choral pieces, because I was singing the Dubois and like the Liszt.
Bartok - Bluebeard's Castle, from the Opera House my daughter-in-law sings at.
A disk of improvised music for organ and trumpet from Hamburg.

Plus, my son just sent me a dozen records of Glenn Gould playing mostly Bach, because he got given the complete Gould box.

In Rock and Pop, my collection is much thinner: Elvis, Beatles, McCartney, Stones, Souixsie, U2, Marianne Faithfull (naturally!), Jamie Cullum, and a few other oddments.  So I've been trying to fatten this up with more recent stuff that seems interesting to me, as well as filling some older gaps.  Recent purchases:

Agalloch - Ashes against the grain
Mercury Rev - Deserter's Songs
Explosions in the Sky - Earth is not a Cold Dead Place
Helios - Eingya
Mogwai - Happy songs for Happy People
Slint
Alan Parsons Project - Stereotomy (I am interested in the use of some Ambisonic technology in the making of this).

And some humour:

Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Complete songs of Tom Lehrer

I haven't bought any in a few months, I am going to buy more when I get some money from my birthday.

My two most recent would be:

The Chemical Wedding, by Bruce Dickinson
Vol. 4, by Black Sabbath.

Bought them both at a second-hand music store, they have a decent selection, but I am probably going to have to order from some internet store for what I get after my birthday, they didn't have CoC or BLS, and didn't have the clutch album I wanted.

Sorry dude, I bought the last copy they had.

I haven't listened to it yet. I have no idea how they managed to trim down a 5 hour freakout to 35 minutes of LP. I'm kind of scared of listening to it, actually.

I am happy about this, given that I lost my copy of Repeater a couple of months ago.

Last thing I bought was Clear Blue Sky by Followed By Ghosts. Was fucking fantastic. I'll get their next album when they release it next week or whatever.

In the name of my metal-duality, though, I'll be getting dragonforce's Ultra Beatdown in a couple of months, and Metallica's Death Magnetic not long after :P

I just bought At Mount Zoomer, having only just noticed that it came out, and also School of Language's s/t, which is a lovely piece of slightly off-kilter british indie pop with an absurdly catchy first track (Rockist Part 1). I nearly bought It's Not Something But It Is Like Whatever by Errors, too, but didn't, because I also needed to eat.

Went to my favorite store in the world yesterday - Greville Sreet Records - spent a few hours looking, then just got the ones I picked out straight away.

Patti Smith - Easter
Al Green - Let's Stay Together
Tom Waits - Rain Dogs

Also: Miles Davis - A Tribute to Jack Johnson (my favorite of anything I've heard from him - better than Bitches Brew and In a Silent Way combined!)

That's sort of the way I feel about it.  It felt watered-down and boring, and about halfway through, all the songs started to sound the same. My Pain and Sadness... on the other hand explored a few different sounds and was noisy, upbeat, crazy and in your face.

Last night I got the Langhorne Slim self-title LP at their show. It is good "carousin' with your buddies at the local dive bar while drinking whiskey and sharing stories with the bum at the next stool over from you" music. Basically, in attitude it is a lot like Two Gallants.
