When I get back from sydney next week it will be the week of shorts, you've brought this on yourselves.

i think i could see those shorts working but not with those shoes or that shirt. i don't know what outfit would work, but i do for some reason really like those shorts so there's got to be at least one out there.

Well the shirt and shoes weren't meant to be an outfit, I just got back in and threw on the three pairs of pants to take pics.

And your humorous salad/salt comparison is not analogous  :-D

This is true. I have never felt borderline offended by bad salads before, but bad ties always make me wonder if the dude is some reject from a shitty ska band (is that redundant?) or something.

Honestly, ties are relatively conservative items and a good one is never garish. It's OK if the color is relatively bright or something as long as it's still a complementary shade, but the loud patterns almost never work.

Also, ties are meant to be worn with vests. VESTSSSS!

OZY: Besides the tie, I really like that suit. It looks very nicely tailored.

Vests are absolutely the next thing I am adding to my wardrobe once I get this tie situation sorted out. I want some good vests so hard.

Also, that suit jacket was $1 and fits perfectly. It's the absolute most awesome thing I've ever found in a thrift shop. All I needed to do was find a good matching pair of trousers, which I did, and it was fantastic. I love it.

Anyway.

Oh man, those shorts, Gilead. You better have some damn good justification for those shorts.

I had to wear a vest at my old job. Here's the thing about a vest. Do not wear just a vest if you are dressed up. People will mistake you for a servant. If they see you with a jacket/vest/tie combo, then you are good, but do not wear just a vest and tie. It is terrible.

Also, I used to have to wear the most obnoxious tie for work. It was dark blue and had red and cream colored compasses on it. Because it was the four points, get it? Now I wear one that is similar to the middle tie posted earlier, but mine is tan with thin diagnol blue stripes about 3/4" apart. It looks really nice because I'm also wearing a tan suit to go with it. And this suit is tailored to fit me. Maybe I'll take a picture of myself in it later to show off what I wear at work.

I don't hate on those shorts, though I do prefer the slightly longer knee-length variety.

I hate on the fact that on a hot summer day in sydney, clubs and pubs will still not let a man in with nice shorts and proper shoes. I think bouncers are just unsympathetic because they've been sweltering in black pants all afternoon.

Navy suits are a bitch to get a nice tie for, you either need to go alot darker or in a different direction.

I like my dark grey suit, light grey suits are nice because you can be adventurous with ties, like go for colours (Pastel of course), for instance grey pinstripe suit my dad wore to a family wedding looker bitchin' with this tie

but you could maybe do something ike this

with that suit. Cannot tell because of lighting though.

I like the shorts.

People need to learn the difference between subtle and understated, and just plain boring.

It is a tricky distinction, but I believe in y'all.

In other news, I've decided to give up on trying to be ahead of the curve at all, and will from now on be drawing 90% of my clothing inspiration from the 1970's. I just got some bellbottoms. I am pretty excited about this.

So wrong.
I've been trying to introduce the real summer suit for a few years now.
Formal shorts and a short-sleeved suit jacket.

And the house suit (which is exactly like a suit but made out of über-comfy cotton sweatpants material).

Look out for this all over Milan and New York by 2010.

In other news, I think I have an addiction to buying clothes.
When I moved back in with my parents to bridge the gap between school and full-time job, I had to clean out 6 shelves to hold my t-shirts and sweatshirts so my wardrobe wouldn't explode.
And there are still t-shirts stacked in my bathroom.
Now I don't wear around 70% of my clothes but I still cannot throw them away.
Which is why I've decided to do what Girl Talk did to music: Cut them up and make them better.
Which coincidentally means I'll have to learn how to sew.
Expect either greatness or ridiculousness (maybe even both) to happen.

Taste in music is debatable and isn't debatable somehow.
I don't listen to a lot of black music but I like what happened to it on the record.

Same way I don't really like some of my old t-shirts and jeans anymore but I have a hunch that the outcome could be glorious.

I think Pretty in Pink did more for the summer suit then any one person could ever do.  The other option is be as adorable is this guy

Also Gilead, from that pic it makes the shorts look slightly too short and slightly too tight, it could be a slightly bent leg issue though.

To clarify, it's not that I hate the style of the shorts, it's just that they don't really suit you. I'm going to be blunt, but your legs are pale as all hell and not the best shape for those shorts. You have to have pretty good legs to wear shorts like that.

Gilead, I really want to like those shorts on you but I just don't:( Some tailoring on the length might do good things, but right now they make your knees look kind of...chubby? I'm not sure quite what it is, but it's not working for me.

For me, plimsolls are defined by the way they make my feet sweat and then start to smell; open sandals don't have that problem (much).  I wear sandals much of the time all year round (even in snow), and only with socks when no-one is looking and I need to change into shoes later.

Why not wear cutoffs? They are like shorts, but go over the knee. Plus pockets, or should I say pockets that don't make it appear as if your John Thomas has a light attachment.

Shorts have never been my thing. I don't agree with the concept of men's legs existing in public. This is why I am generally red-faced and sweating like a pig in a slaughterhouse the second the sun comes out, but hey. Also, I believe that men's feet are only acceptable in public on the beach.

I think this summer I defined pretty well why one shouldn't wear cut-offs. I wasn't going for stylish here- this is at a roof-top barbecue, so comfortable and weather-appropriate prevailed. But that's pretty much how I dressed the entire summer.

God damn this is a really unflattering picture.

This is a fine example of the hackneyed old advice to "be yourself." Some girls like them, other girls hate them. The important thing to realize is that no matter what you do some girls will like it and some girls won't, so just do whatever feels right to you.

i never wear short things either. i am pretty small and skinny but also kind of pear shaped. a fitted shirt and a pair of nice pants or jeans (to me) make me look pretty dang good whereas skirts and shorts always seem make me look overweight no matter what. every summer i just bear the heat and try not to get heatstroke too bad. now that i have written it down and read it over that is pretty stupid, i guess i am vainer than i thought.

Not always a good idea... Perhaps they shouldn't have been made of denim as it makes you look like you stole them from the 80's, never a good thing.

Jorts = jean shorts I'm pretty sure?

Honestly, I just wanted to be comfortable in 90 degree heat so I took three or four pairs of skinny jeans that I had worn out over the course of the year and chopped them up like so.

I have about five months to come up with a better idea for the coming summer. :|

The difference is healthiness, you don't want to look like you have just got out of the coffin, anymore than you want to look like you took a dip in a deep fat frier.

I like to think there is way to make shorts on men work, simply because otherwise I would die of a heat stroke in the summer. I wear shorts like these (though slightly longer because I think my knees look funny):

I would never call them a fashion statement, I'm just trying to get the lesser evil out of the shorts world - which is particularly difficult when my legs could have me mistaken for Big Foot.
