THE LIST
« on: 26 Oct 2008, 09:32 »

As I think I've mentioned once or twice before, someone once called "bullshit" on my statement that I had listened to "thousands" of bands.  In order to prove him wrong, I said I would name 1,000 bands - not local bands, either, 1,000 bands you could conceivably buy in a record store or on Amazon or something - that I enjoy.  Since the ratio of "bands I enjoy" to "bands I do not enjoy" is so low, it logically followed that if I could do 1,000 I like, then surely I've heard thousands of bands that I don't like.

Well, I got to 700 without blinking but slowed down, and by 800 I was struggling a bit with my memory.  I saved the list for posterity, and thus, here it is.  These are good bands.  Check them out!

Damien Rice surprised me a little by showing up on that list.

Go figure.

I agree with Wombat. Posting this list in its entirety was pretty unnecessary.

But since you've done it, I have to wonder what qualifies as something you "enjoy." Because you talk about struggling with your memory, and, I don't know? I kind of like to think that using the word "enjoy" in the present tense means this is something you have adequately digested over time and still listen to on a fairly regular basis, so that you could probably recall it with ease, not something you heard this one time and thought was rockin'. I am not accusing you or anything, I am just curious, because I think I might be able to say I, in my current state of being, really enjoy maybe 100 bands, and listen to upwards of 200, tops.

EDIT: I listen to Damien Rice.

EDIT 2: Bad Religion and Eels both appear twice. Don't ask me how I noticed this because I don't know.

I agree with Wombat. Posting this list in its entirety was pretty unnecessary.

Absolutely!  But 99% of these forums are unneccessary.  It took me all of two minutes, and was kind of a joke.

Quote
But since you've done it, I have to wonder what qualifies as something you "enjoy." Because you talk about struggling with your memory, and, I don't know?

When I said "struggling with my memory" I meant that when I got to 800 I was having a hard time remembering new bands to put on there - after looking at it now, I even forgot a bunch of pretty big ones.

But, as I told the guy who challenged me, "enjoy" in this sense meant that they're an artist/band that, if someone asked me if I like them, I would say "Yes".  Not intended to be a list of bands I like every song by, or else a lot of them wouldn't be on there (like, say, Weezer or Damien Rice).

Quote
EDIT 2: Bad Religion and Eels both appear twice. Don't ask me how I noticed this because I don't know.

Weird, I was CTRL-Fing all the time to make sure I didn't duplicate.  Oh well.

Now go through and name your favourite song by all of them. (or failing that if you've got "equals", a song that you enjoy muchly)
You have five minutes, to prove non-googleage. That shouldn't be so hard becasue you have the bands there already.

I suppose some of those bands should be qualified as "for certain values of enjoy".

That list is actually almost a year old, I think, I could easily finish the 200 I had left just with stuff I've heard this year.

Also no I am not going to name 800 songs in 5 minutes to prove non-Googleage.  I'm pretty sure it's physically impossible to type that fast.   :-)

The entire music forum is devoted to Jackie's musical masturbation. No matter what you make think you are discussing, the truth is you are talking about Jackie's sonic jizz.

Well, it does serve one purpose: Anytime anyone wants to know if I like a certain band, they can check this thread!

In fact I would support everyone else posting every single band they can think of that they enjoy in this thread, because then we wouldn't have any messy "Oh, I forgot you don't like Sloan, you bitter shell of a being" moments.

I would go to a Planet Tommy-themed restaurant, especially if there was Silkworm boxsets and anatomically correct plush Tommys for sale.

I tried this exercise yesterday and got as far as fifty before I got bored. Maybe later I'll give it another go.

Very little, to be honest.  Lightnin' Hopkins, BB King, Coltrane, Miles Davis, John Zorn... pretty much the "big names" in blues/jazz.  I've never really felt the need to dig deeper in those.

I don't listen to classical because I can just listen to post-rock instead and get roughly the same thing, only better.  In my opinion.

Man as much as I enjoy stoner metal, I do not get the idea that some die-hard stoner metal fans have that there is no other music. It's not really so versatile or all-encapsulating or even wonderful a genre that I could listen solely to those kinds of bands and never need anything else.
