Tell me about your Tabletop gamings of recent.
Jace:
CardinalFang (I'm sure I know your name already, just not through the forums),
I was talking to my roommate (who is also participating in the game) about Shadowrun and he was telling me that you have a role, and just that one role, if you spec for that role, you'll do great. If you don't spec for that role that you intend to fill (for example, you take non some non combat skills on a long ranged specialist) that you will suck at all the roles. There isn't really room for combat and non combat skills. Also, there's just so much crap that I had to put on the character sheet. Skills I might never use.
re: white wolf games
You describe what you are doing. There's no such thing as just a punch. There's always some element of description. Like what I did in our Kindred of the East game.
"I tie the rope around the broken piece of wood and then bust out the back window of the car, throw the rope around the vampire and pull him into the car."
Later I would be flung out of the car, I would proceed to pull myself in toward the vampire (he was a giant demon vampire) and then he died so he turned to gunk. Another demon would jump at me and try to headbutt me, I had used my Iron Skin technique earlier in the scene so I ended up headbutting him back before stabbing him with my bare hands.
There's just so much more to describing what you do than, I walk forward 5 feet and cut him. And I love describing how I fly through the air as I throw daggers at my 4 opponents while keeping up my jumping momentum by using their buddies as trampolines.

I followed this link and poked a round a bit on that site, and now I really really want to start playing some hex-and-counter wargames, the real thing, not PC-simulations, of which I've been a fan for years.
Do you have any suggestions? I'm looking for either Napoleonic era, late 19th century European conflicts, or WWII games.

I'll be happy to suggest something! First, however, how many players and do you want something that's suitable for solitaire play? Oh, also what kind of scale? Tactical, strategic, etc.
Jace,
You may know me as Senor Hamhands.
I get what you're saying about 'descriptive' now. However I think that's more of a group/gamemaster thing than a system thing. If you can take a look at Feng Shui. In that games you get bonuses for describing cool moves and a penalty if you do the same thing over and over plus it's a really interesting world.
I haven't played Shadowrun in ages but I do remember that characters did have set roles ie. Street Samurai, Rigger, Combat Mage, etc but I don't recall that you couldn't take any skill that struck your fancy. Also I thought most White Wolf games your characters roles we're more or less defined by your 'sire' for Vampire or your clan for Werewolf. That doesn't seem all that different to me. Then again i haven't played either game in ages so they may be different now.
Jace:
Ahhh, yes the good Senor.
The thing about the white wolf games is that you don't normally need skills to roleplay or do certain actions. This doesn't seem to be the case in shadowrun, then again, I'm not even sure how shadowrun works. Nobody really told me anything about it. I'm only sort of playing anyways.
(The guy running the game runs it while he paints miniatures, nobody is really that into it)

Well, Cardinal, as for the WWII, I'm looking for something like the Operational Combat System in terms of scale and scope. Operational manoeuvre warfare with units from battallions to divisions. Guderian's Blitzkrieg looks really interesting, but I'm afraid it could be too complex as a start. It is, though, for sale there for €40, and that's a big plus.
As for 19th century, are you familiar with the old PC game Age of Rifles? I want a game like that, just more realistic and historically correct, to play epic battles in a 200 yards/20 minutes per hex/turn scale.
Solitaire capability would be a big plus, I think it's going to be damn hard to find people to play with, except my brother, but at the moment he's kind of tied up in training for real war and doesn't have time for wargames.
CardinalFang:
The latest thing amongst wargames is the 'Card Driven Game' where cards are used as either events or to move units and attack. It generally works very well but makes games suck for solitaire play.
Fortunately the Operational Combat System does not use it. Unfortunately I am completely unfamiliar with the series. I have heard very good things about them though.
I highly recommend a game company called GMT. They make excellent games with very good components.Take a look at their Musket&Pike series of games. Another big plus is that they post their rules online. It's nice to be able to read the rules before deciding to buy. Unfortunately wargames are not the cheapest thing to have. An exception to that rule is some games from Avalanche Press. Namely their Quick Play games retail for $20 US. They are actually decent little games. Avalanche Press seems to have an undeservedly bad reputation on BoardGameGeek. (Full Disclaimer: I was a playtester for Avalanche Press). Even so their Panzer Grenadier series (with 3rd edition rules) is quite popular.
Another site to take a look at is Vassal. It is a java based program that allows people to play board games over the internet. It works very well although it can be a memory hog. Take a look at the modules (games) available for it. One thing you'll notice is that there are many GMT games available. Another popular online game program is Cyberboard. It also works very well but I am a little more partial to Vassal. Cyberboard works better for Play-By-Email where Vassal shines for the online version of Face-to-Face play.
BoardGameGeek has gotten more wargame friendly in the past couple of years so it's become a pretty good resource. Another great site is ConSimWorld. it is not a very pretty site but it is chock full of great info and many game companies and game designers frequent the site. Also give Web-Grognard a look. I think every wargame ever made is listed there somewhere.
I hope some of this has helped. I'm sorry I don't have a specific game to recommend at the moment (Stupid busy weekend) but when I get a chance I'll see what I have on my shelf.
my God there's a lot of links in this
