So is it me or...

Are the all the girls in QC land obnoxiously crazy and all the guys a bunch of wusses. By the way I like the comic as it is I am just making an observation. I mean if a girl who worked for you tried to pry into your business the way Sven's intern did would you not at the very least bitch her out if not fire her ass on the spot? If you look all the girls have some sort of crippling emotional crazyness.

In the first place, I wouldn't start to tell to the intern everything about my life. That way, she wouldn't start to make comments about my life. Or forcing her to make housecleaning jobs. It was Sven fault in the first place. If you don't want that the others make comments on your life, you can't tell them things about it.

I think that her role is less of an intern, more of a "person who I offered a job to for some reason (because I was drunk), I guess she is more of a friend than an intern."

You are probably right. He didn't knew what to do with her at the beginning, so he use her to everything he need (including as a confident).

Prying doesn't make you crazy and Dora seems pretty normal to me, so does Penny really. Sven isn't a wuss. I'm not sure about Marten. Will, don't know him well enough. He's shy, but being shy doesn't make you a wuss.

It's not just you.   Frankly, Sven has bought into all the guilt-trippiness of the intern and everyone else when he didn't need to.  He is what he is, and has never made any bones about it.  Now all the women have the nerve to be surprised that he's acting exactly the way he always said he would.  Frankly, he should have shown the little intern the door the moment she showed up, unannounced and unwanted.  She has no input into his personal life, frankly, and the self-righteousness of "majoring as a good person" makes me just want to puke on her little twenty-something shoes.  Hey - if Sven wants to change, that's fine.  But the preachy crap is BS.   Yeah, yeah, sex changes everything, oohh, the shallowness and unsatisfying quality of an empty relationship. Sure. Right.  Got that.  Sven is, or should be, an alpha male with no excuses - hell that's what gets the girlies in his bed.  That's why assholes never have a problem getting laid.  And then, naturally, some airhead always thinks it means he's in love with her and it's gonna end like "Retty Woman."  Well, so solly, it didn't and doesn't.  Now you're pissed off because you didn't get the bride's bouquet when you agreed to jump into the sack with somebody who told you right off that this was all it was.

What this is is a very nice little fable about how people can talk themselves into just about anything, including that their fuckbuddy is really Richard Gere in disguise.   Guess Faye just finally got the message.

Faye is obnoxious and marten is a wuss. Hannelore is just crazy.

other then that they all seem to be on the relatively normal side. Little butch lesbian at an all girls college book store is normal in my book, so i guess im jaded a bit.

Sorry but when you make an intern into your maid and tell her about your life, you give her permission to comment on it. If he didnt want the judgement then he can 1. fire her. 2. Stop telling her about his relationships. 3. Get the fuck over it. or 4.Change. To name a few.

That's like saying, OMG! The people in the comic are... PEOPLE!

NO SAY IT ISNT SO

There are many possible reactions to what the intern said (dammit, I am forgetting her name), but considering Sven's changing temperment, what he did is completely reasonable. People forget, a million strips ago, Sven was just this recurring character whos raison d'etre was just being a shallow Lothario. But then, one day, Sven brought Marten into his world sufficiently that Faye felt the need to defend her friend. We don't know exactly why Sven paid more attention to her than any other woman that's walked through his life, but the point is, he started changing from that point. Not quickly. Slowly. He started by not having so much promiscuous sex. He started to think more about his actions. He started, clumsily, to work with the idea of having a girl as a friend rather than something to get sex from. That was, in a way, a setup for the eventual intern.

And now here we are. Sven is a more fully realized character, not as secure as he used to be, as opposed to a confident antagonist for Faye, or a source of comic relief and/or shadenfreude for the strip, like Angus McPhee (ooh, hey, there's someone that's not a wuss! He's still a confident asshole, right?)

Personally, I like the strip better for that. Is Sven still an asshole sometimes? Yes. Is Faye still an asshole sometimes? Yes. As Randy Milholland of Something Positive once put it, "the most interesting people are."

No particular nerve, other than it's not always entertaining watching fictional people react in unrealistic ways just so the storyteller can experiment with a new character.   Yeah, as I said, he should have shown her the door, but then what is the storyteller supposed to do with the new character he's dreamed up to be Sven's Jiminy Cricket?

I dunno about "obnoxiously" crazy - I find Dora's flavor of crazy to be quite endearing. But yeah, often the guys are wusses and often the girls are drama queens. It's kinda like the real world that way, you know?

Wisdom doesn't always come wrapped in a pretty box. Sometimes people tell you the ugly truth you don't want to hear. A smart person stops and asks themselves, "Is what was just said to me TRUE?" before they get all offended.

Penny's problem is that she thinks everyone should think exactly like she does or she doesnt accept their discussion.

She takes the "be yourself" style of living an goes into the extreme.

You hold disdain over "snerks"?  I suppose you have problems with Twain because he uses "ain't" on occasion (not that anyone here is Mark Twain, but still...)

What really drove me to say the guys (at least Sven and Marten) are wusses is the fact that they most of us would not take that sort of crap from a girl. I mean everyone takes crap to a certain extent, but sometimes it gets ridiculous. It just seems that Sven was well within his rights here.

I think he was within his rights but I mean - it's possible to be technically in the clear (he set the parameters of the relationship pretty early) and still be inconsiderate or a jerk.

If all of the ladies in this comic are "obnoxiously" crazy, then every woman in your life is either a) "obnoxiously" crazy, or b) a simpering, pathetic woman who does nothing but aim to please (men).  And if all the men are wusses, I'm not sure what you expect a "man" to be?  I imagine some large, hairy creature that proclaims the weakness/inferiority of women and men who are not equally hair and rude.

Realism (sometimes) exists in this comic, and the characters are pretty damn normal.  I rather like the changes that the characters are experiencing, because that is part of being human - the whole changing because of things happening to you.  If Sven were to remain a static character, he'd get boring.  I don't imagine he's going to remain a philandering jackass for the rest of his years (because, as aforementioned, people CHANGE).

Is there something else you're referring to, or do you think "violence is wrong no matter who it is / who it's directed at" is a chauvinistic attitude?

I was in the wrong thread, I misinterpreted this as a reply to the "QC and violence against men" thread.

All of the characters---male and female---have some degree of neuroses, but that's kind of what makes the comic interesting. If everyone was perfectly happy and balanced the drama would be a lot more forced. Plus, you know, most real people have quirks that make them seem "crazy" to outsiders. It's called life.

So, basically, it's just you.

Hm...I feel like there's so much more going on in this story arc to ponder than just "Is Sven being a jerk?"

Am I the only one who's ever gotten into a non-romantic yet physical relationship and didn't realize they actually cared until a catalyst in the form of another person showed up?

You should take a look at some of his essays, written in first person.  Samuel Clemens could get very colloquial when the mood struck.  Also "ain't" is not strictly a Southernism.  You'll find it used with some regularity in other regions and countries.

Hmm.
The fact is that these people act a heck of a lot like normal people I know.  This doesn't mean they aren't obnoxiously crazy or wussy.  I used to be a bit of a wuss myself, and there was a time I couldn't identify the craziness in many of my friends because what do you compare crazy to when everyone is?
But yeah.  If Sven was well-adjusted, he wouldn't be feeling guilty about doing exactly what he stipulated he might do at the beginning of their "relationship"...maybe concerned and worried and annoyed, but not guilty.  If Faye was well-adjusted, she probably wouldn't have such unrealistic and thus unfair expectations of Sven to the point where she suddenly becomes hostile towards him despite his giving her what she wants for however many months.  If anyone in the strip was well-adjusted, they wouldn't constantly be calling Sven an asshole.  Sometimes people like to have sex, and they shouldn't become obligated to people they have sex with because those people want something from people like Sven that said people never pretended to intend on giving.
Anyway, so few people are well-adjusted, I generally don't expect it represented in comics.  Sorta nice when they pop up though, easier to relate.  Martin seems pretty good.

Edited for clarity.

Hm...I feel like there's so much more going on in this story arc to ponder than just "Is Sven being a jerk?"

Am I the only one who's ever gotten into a non-romantic yet physical relationship and didn't realize they actually cared until a catalyst in the form of another person showed up?
yes. you are.

Mark Twain isn't real.

and in any case, he uses ain't as dialogue for his characters, who are in the south.

the two situations (and authors) are hardly comparable

You should take a look at some of his essays, written in first person.  Samuel Clemens could get very colloquial when the mood struck.  Also "ain't" is not strictly a Southernism.  You'll find it used with some regularity in other regions and countries.

does he use the tern 'snerks', too.

does he call you dawg, too?

How now my sweet creature of bombast?  Ahh, wonderful examples of true eloquence.  Your masterful renderings of ancient urban slang leave me insouciant.

Sven is, or should be, an alpha male with no excuses - hell that's what gets the girlies in his bed.  That's why assholes never have a problem getting laid.

The usage of various words through this thread - "wusses", "Alpha-male", etc. - ...please, not again....

So....how come no one has brought up the whole "I slept with someone else, thought you should know" thing is a rather hurtful way of coming out about it.

"Hey, I did something that I knew full well would hurt you considerably, and now I'm telling you as if actually being completely direct will ease any of your pain. Cause brutal honesty always makes things better."

Also he could have muttered an I'm really sorry for hurting you while preparing for the beating.

And those who say it was just sex, well no. There were signs of friendship between the two of them. Hurting a friend in that manner isn't cool, or, in my opinion (therefore the only one that really matters, cause that is the law of the internet, next to blind hate and boobs) redeemable in any way.

What, should he have been subtle about it?

"Okay, guess which actually happened:  A) I killed your sister.  B)  I slept with your sister.  C) I slept with Gina Riversmith.

Remember, if you guess right, you win a prize!"
