Cartoons that have made you cry.
« on: 14 Jul 2009, 23:02 »

Hah. Dora almost got Marten targeted for another Scorngasm. I think its funnier that they were watching Land Before Time to begin with, IMO.

So, time to confess. What animated movies have made you cry?

I remember the first time I watched the first Pokemon movie, it made me tear up something fearce. In my defence, I was only in my tweens.  :-P

Grave of the Fireflies. I defy anyone to watch that and NOT cry. I haven't even read Maus or seen Barefoot Ren and I know I will cry when I do.

I also cried as a kid during Bambi, Snow White, Lady and the Tramp and Dumbo.

Anime:
Grave of the Fireflies: Given. If you didn't cry, you either did NOT pay any attention, or you have a void in place of your heart. One of those movies that you watch once, cry, and never watch again. Not because it was bad, but because it was TOO SAD.
5cm Per Second: Makoto Shinkai's work in general has gotten to me to tear up, but this one made me cry.
Not sure if this counts, but I did cry during the Hisui ending of the Tsukihime visual novel game. It was done in Anime style, so I guess it counts.

Cartoons:
Up!: Up! had me cry two times. It was actually the first American made animation that made me cry.

That's really it. I mean, things have made me tear up now and then, but only a few things can really make me cry.

Edit - Somebody mentioned Maus, totally forgot about that one. I read it for a History class I took, it was amazing. I don't remember crying (I know I teared up though), but it came close enough to warrant a mention.

Grave of the Fireflies. Amen.

I can't think of any cartoons that made me cry off the top of my head, but I'm sure it's happened. The Lion King, maybe?
Anyway, if I'm emotional enough to start with, anything will make me cry.

I cry at movies, anime, cartoon, books, pictures ... generally speaking, I seem to put myself in the subjects place, emotionally, or feel sympathetic towards them.

The one that got me the worst that I can remember, I mean it really made me bawl, was Voices of a Distant Star

Life is Beautiful...

I really thought I could make it to the end without crying... But... It was just way to much, such a wonderful movie but everything is so horrible and the dude just wanted his son to have a good enough life!

Then again.. that was a movie with actors. No cartoon film has maked me cry except Fantasia but that's because the music and the animation was beautiful... Out of this world

the fox and the hound. i am eighteen years old and can't make it five minutes into that film without sobbing like a kid.

i also cried during finding nemo, when his mom died at the beginning.
(i haven't seen bambi, i won't allow myself to. i know it'd be too sad.)

and of course, the lion king. still to this day brings a tear to thine eye.

man, kid movies are such a bummer.

EDIT: fruits basket also made me cry at some points (the anime and the manga, but i mean the anime).
and gravitation.
which is really funny, because he modeled the magical love gentleman fan art off of the artist who does fruits basket.
and gravitation is straight-up shonen-ai.

I can't remember many actual crying moments, but I can remember a lot of times when I got emotional about fictional characters' plight.

In the game Valkyria Chronicles when (Certain character) died, it made me move in the general direction of crying.  (Japanese RPGs count as anime)

Most of the instances I can think of feeling like that are from human acted drama though.  Most of the animes grown up enough to get me emotionally involved don't get licensed in the US.  As far as cartoons, most of the tragic ones I saw when I was little (And cried at some of them), and modern kids cartoons don't have the balls to kill off any characters because it'd make overprotective parents write angry letters.  Bambi's mom would never die if Bambi was written today.

The one that got me the worst that I can remember, I mean it really made me bawl, was Voices of a Distant Star

I could feel it coming when Mikako had the emotional breakdown near the end when she realized that she may never see Terao again, and starts crying in her cockpit, pleading that she just wants to go home. I didn't cry though. I think the problem was that it wasn't long enough. Voices got me close, but I never ended up crying, but it is only about 24 minutes long. 5cm on the other hand is closer to an hour/hour and 15 minutes, so it had much more time to choke tears out of me.

Voices was beautiful though.

The only movie (cartoon and not) that has made me cry is The Grave of The Fireflies, and I have seen some sad stuff... i have watched it twice and read the story once, cried the three times.

I will never watch that movie again anyway or read it, it's very good and real but too much for my soul.

The Lion King   (wake up dad..)

That is the saddest thing ever. He's all "wake up dad" and you can tell he is soooo sad. That movie shouldn't be shown to children.

Cowboy Bebop (at the end when it plays the final song!)

Oh man, me too. I didn't know it made anyone else as sad as it made me.

I don't remember actually crying to any film at all, but some were really close. No, I did not supress the feelings. It just takes really much sadness to squeeze some tears out of my eyes.

Full Metal Alchemist got me more than once. Zingoleb, you are right, this was the most emotional happening in the whole series.

Princess Mononoke was close, too.

Lion King totally made me cry - and that's a good thing! Children don't need to be completely sheltered, god I hate excessively dumbed-down kid's movies. Iron Giant made me feel tearful but not actually cry (an adult for the latter). I forgot how great that movie was! Haven't actually cried at cartoons as an adult but I have started to cry more easily in movies. :P

I've never really been one to cry at movies often (I decided at a young age it was weak to cry about movies but not other stuff, dunno why) but I do get emotionally invested, and I never understood the entertainment value in watching, reading or listening to something that doesn't stir you emotionally. Why bother?

Geez, man, you got me good. I was going to mention the same thing. Luck of the Fryish hurt me worse than Jurassic Bark, though, as a tear actually rolled down my cheek.

I teared up just a tad toward the end of Gran Torino too.

All men here should be ashamed of crying full-blown if they did so in the presence of others. In private is perfectly all right.

Truth! Although the second time I was all "shit, that sucks".

Yeah I cried a bit to The Iron Giant but the feelgood ending kinda stopped that pretty fast.

Some of the scenes in Full Metal Panic got me close, mainly in The Second Raid series.

honestly I didnt cry when bambi's mom died.  Not because I had no feelings but I actually didnt know she died!  I thought she abandoned Bambi and I resented the mother because of this until I saw it in my teen years when my young cousins watched the movie.  I was like, "oh wow, she died?!"

Land Before time and Lion King I almost did.  I had that lump in your throat when you feel it coming but I forced it away.

I almost did at the end of Futurama episode about Fry's dog.  That has to be the sadest thing I have EVER seen! Such a devoted dog, waiting for his master to return.  Fry never returns, but he still waits.  Unit one day his eye lids are so heavy, he closes them, for the last time.  I wouldnt be surprised if I did cry but couldnt remember.

Fox and the Hound, I was probably 7 or 8. I kept it together until I was to the restroom, so that no one would see me cry. That's it, though. The "gifted" program in middle school killed that innocent part of me; Maus was the first reading requirement, and then we went over all of the stuff that was too terrible for the novel to depict (I especially remember the part about the Nazi's dealing with Jewish babies...like clay disks). It's funny to look back at crying over a work of fiction when there are much more horrendous things happening in reality at this very moment.

I'll disagree with that actually. I wouldn't restrain it to animation.
That said, I can say honest to god i didn't cry watching it. Sure I was really sad and torn up, but i tend to deal with that stuff internally. It gets me thinking rather than get me alll teary eyed.

I never watched Futurama (yeah yeah, I suck) so I didn't understand exactly what was going on, but I've seen the clip.  The dog waits literally forever (for him) and Fry never comes back.  Who is Fry?  Can someone explain what the hell is going on, because I don't know anything about Fry other than that he made his dog wait forever, which is a totally dick thing to do.  Unless something happened to him.

Well, the whole premise of Futurama is that Fry is an average pizza delivery boy who ends up cryogenically frozen and wakes up in the future. So he doesn't leave the dog on purpose.

Thanks.  Bummer about his dog, then.  (Which means they only showed the dog to makes us feel bad?)

Shazam, the 1981 cartoon, drove me to tears.

It's horrible.

pretty much.  Fry finda the fossil remains of the dog and wants to clone him.  he decides against it when he discovers the dog lived a full life when the professor tells fry the age ot which the dog died.  So fry figured he lead a good life and let him rest in peice.

then it flashes back to the dog waiting for fry.  Waiting and waiting...
