Public demo starts October 27th (but maybe only if you've preordered).

Oh God

Oh shiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. Before I hadn't considered buying L4D or L4D2, but that trailer completely won me over.

You know there's the same Steam deal for L4D2 that there was for Borderlands - If there are 3 other people who would like to buy the game at a $16 discount (plus early demo access and bonus baseball bat ooo) let me know. I can arrange it.

Hmm... Tempting... Get L4D2 on Steam for half price? I'm not sure my grades can handle that. I think I'll just stick with Borderlands before I go zombie hunting.

Okay, I figure this is the best forum to ask in. In that trailer Zombiedude posted, what is the music that starts playing a couple times? I know I've heard it before, but I don't know where. The music that starts at 0:38.

No clue off the top of my head, but my first guess would be something from the original game mixed up a bit, much like the banjo bit at the beginning.

b) a white man in a white suit about to beat up a "mudman" that is dragging his knuckles on the ground bears some bad connotations
You had to point that out to me for me to think about it.

My new favorite sound is the frying pan impact noise.

I could never get into L4D. The whole thing seemed completely repetitive, with boring interchangeable guns, characters with only cosmetic differences, linear stupid levels and gameplay that had no variations after the first 15 minutes. I even read in some interview that they had their granmas or some such people testing the game and the earlier versions actually had non-linear levels, but after granma kept complaining about getting lost they changed that. Great, playtest the damn thing on people who will never play a first person shooter for any reason other than BUT GRANMAAAAAAAAA I THINK MY GAME IS REALLY COOOOOOOOL

Some folk say it's the multiplayer with friends that makes it fun. Why, I ask you, couldn't you just play multiplayer with your friends in a game that has characters with actual gameplay differences, lots of different weapons that actually behave in different ways and support different gameplay styles and custom levels of the non-linear variety? You know, like Team Fortress 2?

Also L4D2 seems like a "sequel" in much the same way that X-Com: Terror From The Deep was a sequel. Which is to say WE RESKINNED EVERYTHING SOME THINGS

I did get bored of L4D for a while. Guys who preordered it that I've talked to said it blows the first out of the water though. I guess I will wait for the demo to be sure.

[look at this frowny woman]

You know, these Gritty Pictures of Realistic Things in the L4D2 publicity shots just make me think the devs take the game entirely too seriously.

It's a first person shooter in a Zombie Apocalypse setting! You might as well put the Village People in Warhammer 40k as a Space Marine chapter and pretend that was serious!

It appears to me that this lady's nose has imploded.

Also the whole thing has some kind of vague plastic surgery criticism vibe that I can't put my finger on. No wait, yes I can. In a work of Social Commentary Horror Writing© that is a total ripoff of The Picture Of Dorian Gray, I could very well imagine some rich socialite getting her portrait painted and then the portrait disintegrating into this as she gets more plastic surgery.

Yeah, I thought you just said that the devs take the game entirely too seriously.

Yes.

L4D always felt serious to me. Extremely serious. And not in any reasonable kind of way, it just felt gratuitously serious. The whole game was basically serious for the sake of being serious. Kind of like GTA IV, except that game at least had the decency to have a plot as some kind of framework to be serious in, instead of just having SERIOUS all over the place with no context whatsoever. But even so, these days it just seems to me like we've gone from "gore and swearing" to "people are sad and everything is bland" as the thing used to hook in the barely pubescent MATURE GAMES FOR MATURE GAMERS SUCH AS MYSELF demographic.

Sure, the "lots of blood and ridiculous explosions" was all style over substance. But at least then we had style. Now we just have no style and no substance. Everything is just bland for the sake of being bland, because bland is realistic and realistic is the best thing to ever happen to games according to people with highly questionable taste in videogames.

Where are the improvised weapons? Why is there zero environmental damage? Where are the melee weapons that are actually useful because they kind of have to be when your ammo is finite but your enemies aren't? How about at least some kind of mildly over-exaggerated ragdoll physics? No? What happened to fun? These are all questions I would ask myself while playing Left 4 Dead, if that were indeed a thing I would do.

And fuck man, Left 4 Dead is the least serious game I've ever played.  The only serious part is me wanting to stay alive to see the next parts of the level, and even then they re-spawn you anyway

I believe I have a new friend in the Combat Rifle (Whichever the one with 60 amo is, anyway).  I used to manually three-shot burst with the AR in the first game, good for ensuring death in infected.  Also, Boomer puke + molotov is the best combo.

He's making it up -- Turtlerock abandoned an open-level design because it just wasn't fun to play; the biggest problem they found is that with the repetitive nature of the game, players would simply find the "best" route and use it time and again, turning what was supposed to be an important gameplay decision into simply a matter of memorization. Instead, they chose to go with a director that influenced the AI, not the level design as a whole.
