The card at the college I went to had a proximity sensor chip...

That would probably increase their lifespan, but at this point I feel like it's a racket. If you go into the card office to add money to your meal or laundry account and it's damaged, they'll make you get a new one right then and there.

Sidenote, I freaking HATE when high school (or middle school in this case, I think) groups come to visit and eat their damn lunch at the dining hall at noon when the line is already almost out the door. I only have an hour to eat lunch and walk (uphill) to my next class.

Meal and laundry account? :psyduck:

My student card has a proximity sensor chip that opens doors. That's it.

I have two cards because I'm technically not a student of the college. The college offers the first two years of an associate university's three years course. The university card is just an ID card but the college card has a barcode and a stripe. Although most of the places you needed to swipe into are just left open. I think the barcode is for library books.

Today the class was doing presentations. Out of the eight students meant to be in, four including me, showed up.

You basically can't live without it here. Forgot to mention that it's also used for printing.

My college ID card had all of the printed data wiped off when I put it in my pocket with a rubber (or an eraser, if you're so inclined). I also didn't know that they could be used to log in to the computers and photocopiers/printers until about a week before I left.

When I hear 'rubber' I definitely don't equate that with 'eraser.'

Fanny:

British vulgar slang - a woman's genitals
US informal - a person's buttocks

Though I do come across the term fanny pack for bumbag occasionally.

Note also: "I know sweet Fanny Adams [or: sweet F. A.] about that", meaning nothing at all (or fuck all).

I've heard of a fanny pack, but it's usually worn in the front, which I guess makes a little more sense now if it's a British term. Bumbag, though...you've lost me there.

The same; but I'd wear it to one side, pushed rather far back - hence on the bum.

Quote from: wikipedia
The name "fanny pack" is derived from the fact that they were traditionally worn facing the rear above the buttocks, for which "fanny" is a slang term in the United States. Despite the name, many users do not wear fanny packs on their rear

One of my best friend's name is Fanny, even though I knew about both of the meanings in English I didn't really think about it. After over three years of living in Glasgow that's totally ruined. If she ever decides to visit me here I'll tell her to use her middle name with my UK friends...

My sister Frances, like many (female) Franceses, is known informally as Fanny - the usage appears not to cause any conflict that I know of.  It's no different from Richards being known as Dick, when you think about it!

Well, when my Glaswegian friends discovered I had a friend named Fanny they were all 'her name is WHAT?!' followed by tons of jokes and laughter, this repeats itself every time I mention her. They'd probably only tone in down to a joke or two to her face, but yeah. It is kind of funny though.

My Uncle's name is Dick Glover. It wasn't until I was 21 and mentioned it to someone and they giggled that I realised how it sounded. He has always just been Dick, it never entered my head that his name sounds like Dick Lover. I feel like that is something I should have picked up on before that, because I am pretty immature in that respect.

I've worked at three different classical stations from the late 70's through the early 90's, and they all insisted on it.

I've heard both when I listen, though.  Even on national programming.  YMMV, it's pretty juvenile anyway!

Writing a popular science article for an assignment. Reformulated William James's foundational principle of psychology as 'monkey see, monkey do'. Pretty pleased with that.

I'm at 20% of the word count, and it needs to be done in six days. Should be doable.

I'm a debater, and I can gauge the type of people I want to interact with based on whether or not they make a 'hurr hurr are you a master debater?' joke.

Also, it's fall break and I'm staying on campus. I'm SO happy and relaxed right now. This town is a paradise when the students are gone. Unfortunately it's the fall color peak and the Floridiots are out in force.

I don't know how it works out there, but are there things that you can still do with a law degree that you could see yourself doing? I fully know the feeling, it only took a month or two of my undergrad law to show me that I was right about not wanting to be a lawyer, but fortunately an undergraduate degree is useful regardless of subject.

You would not be quitting. You'd be redirecting. Don't haemorrage money, time and effort on something that won't achieve what you want. That's silly!

Law degrees in the US aren't generally undergrad degrees, they are specialised degrees that (allegedly) prepare you for both the bar exam and practice in a specialized field (corporate/contract law, criminal law, tax law, ...)

Yea theatre! I did not end up working in the industry but a lot of my classmates are, either locally (DC) or in NYC/LA/Chicago. There are jobs to be had, even if you have to make your own production company. And even if you don't it's a good background that gives you a lot of practical and valuable, if not immediately obvious, skills like analysis and problem solving and teamwork.

I plan to get 'concentrations' in Stage Management and Sound Design. I'm most optimistic about sound design because that has a lot of non-theatrical applications. I'm getting a lot of experience too because I'm the first student in the department in a while who's actually been interested in sound.

At least 2/3rds of the theatre department is actually Theatre Education majors, which makes for an interesting dynamic.

Not sure if I'm being sarcastic there or not. So take it both ways.

I don't understand and I am not interested in math and science. Theatre can still be relevant, etc. etc.

Speaking of degrees no one thinks are relevant anymore, I'm considering switching my minor from Political Science to Appalachian Studies. It probably won't have anything to do with my career, but the again neither would Poli Sci. It's just a topic I've become very interested in recently.

I should mention I was recently tentatively offered a job here in town upon graduate. It's not really a sweet gig and I really want to work in Chicago, so I'm keeping it as a "if nothing else works out" thing. Still, it's nice to have some security.

Haha yeah theatre is relevant. Theatre is definitely gonna help us colonize planets and travel the stars and cure diseases.

Not understanding math and science can be remedied. Not being interested in them is unforgivable.

If the only relevant things in the world are curing diseases or colonizing planets, most things become irrelevant. Is social change dead? We all live in a perfect utopia with no social problems and an infinite knowledge of history. Certainly no reason for anyone to want entertainment in this paradise.

Also not interested in =/= not appreciate the importance of. But it's not something I would be happy doing as a job.

Dangit, I do science, but I've never helped anyone colonize planets, travel the stars, or cure diseases, and I'd prefer not to be accused of such things!

In a few months I will have two degrees, both in art (fine art and art history)! Yeah I'm useless.

On the plus side once society shatters, we'll know who to eat first.

I've met Kris, there's not a lot of good eating on her.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."
