I dunno about anyone else, but the people I spend meatlife time around (and myself) say dude to mean any person at all.

My favourite usage of this is in the office when we're in big serious art review meetings the art manager wishes an artist to add some people to a piece of art: "Stick some dudes in it."

The only time I ever enjoyed using "bro" was when I called a friend of mine Charles Brodelaire because he was hung over beyond all recognition after making the mistake of going to a frat party. (Even in graduate school frats are annoying...)

Thing is, from past experience, once you start using a turn of phrase ironically, it's not too long before it just becomes part of your vocabulary and everyone kinda forgets it was originally an ironic thing. and sometimes I just say girly and drop the girl.

I once heard someone refer to someone else as a "girly friend." When we questioned her about that expression, she explained "well she isn't your girlfriend, but she is your friend and is a girl."
