The Expendables
« on: 11 Jul 2010, 17:14 »

Watch a fucking trailer

I don't know if it'll be good. I don't know if I care if it's good or not. It looks like a bad 80s action movie and that's all I need.

The only problem is that that's the same weekend as Scott Pilgrim.

FUCKING DECISIONS.

I think I'd be more optimistic if Sly wasn't so unabashed about ladling on sentimentality and clumsy passes at timeliness. It's what makes his directorial efforts so boring, so often.

I'm guessing Sam Jackson is not buddies with Sly Stallone, nor does he owe any favors.

Besides, Terry Crews is like Sam Jackson but not lazy.

For a little while there were talks about how the studio was pushing pressure on Stallone to make it PG-13.  If that was the case I would have lost any interest in this film that I have (which is...a little bit).  It's going to be R so at least it's going to have the probably ridiculous action it needs to satisfy it's audience.

However, I am a little sad by the casting.  Stallone, Lundgren, a cameo from The Terminator himself?  Awesome.  Statham....ok?  Jet Li, no.  Do you want to know who should have been in this film but declined?  Steven Seagal and Jeanne-Claude Van Damme.  Now, if those two were in this film I would be a lot more willing to see the film but unless I get awesome recommendations by some trusted people I'll definitely be passing.

-> Kugai

I can name 4 Samuel L Jackson films made that I enjoyed out of the over 30 films he's made in the past 10 years.  I'm so freaking sick of his persona which he takes into every single movie....he's starting to turn into a reason for me to pass on a film.

I am seeing this. I've recently rediscovered my love of ridiculous action movies so this looks like it could, at the very least, be really funny to watch just to see people get hurt. Considering that I enjoyed the shit out of Alien vs Predator 2 I don't have an excuse not to love this film.

Ikrik, I was under the impression that they were trying to get both old-school and new-school action stars, which is why they included Jet Li and Statham. Don't ask me why they picked Couture, maybe they are trying to get the MMA lovers that don't normally watch action films (all 2 of them)?

Maybe I'm totally wrong then?  I just thought I remembered reading about how The Expendables was meant to be a love letter to the old B grade action films, it's not really that big of a deal though.  I'm not that bothered by Statham, considering he's actually done some great action films but Li really doesn't fit with what they're doing and I totally forgot about Couture.  I would have totally preferred maybe replacing them with someone like Clive Owen.

I think it is supposed to be a tribute to the old action movies, but also including the newer actors, sort of a passing-the-torch moment. Except instead of a torch, it is a machine gun that never runs out of ammo and can be fired one-handed with only enough recoil to cause the hero's gleaming pectorals to ripple slightly.

Guys, this movie fuckin rocked. They managed to include every 80's and 90's trope, with rare exception, in and it worked amazingly well in a stupid fun way. The victory calm even ends in a bro fist.

My friends and I have placed bets on the order people die. It's only $4 per person (50 cents per actor, we have a list of 8 actors), but there's a few of us in on it. I'm just hoping to either break even and maybe, if I'm lucky, get enough to cover the cost of the movie.

It was a pretty okay movie! Self-aware enough, and too fast-paced to languish in Sly's signature Reaganite schmaltz. Even the "white man's burden" shit that made John Rambo so odious is negligible, despite its presence.

Mainly I'm just rooting for anything that features Dolph Lundgren. Dude was a Rhodes scholar.

There were so many great and ridiculous scenes in this movie.

SPOILERS (Is this even necesarry?)

Dolph Lundgren curbstomped a passenger in his truck while stunt driving.

Randy Couture punches Stone Cold Steve Austin, who is on fire at the time, in the face.

Terry Crews has a shotgun that fires 4 rounds per second.

That shotgun actually exists. You forgot to mention the explosive shotgun shells, too.

The only problem is that you are lucky to get more than a mag off without jamming, and you go through ammo really quick when you don't have a magical movie magazine. And it is extremely heavy.

This is the best movie to see with other cheesy action movie aficionados. It was awesome, as long as you don't care about realism, or logic. Just huge fireballs.
