Oh, there was something special about Genghis.  His holdings stretched across most of Asia and into "Europe" (OK, Turkey, so it's debatable if that's Europe).  He had some interesting... habits?

Harems were the norm anyway, and as the most important/wealthiest male, his was the largest.  He got first pick of the women from any new region he conquered.  One of his (many) sons had 40 sons of his own, and one of his grandsons (Kublai) had 22 legitimate sons.  The illegitimate count isn't known.  In the empire’s region, 8% of the current male population have that identical chromosome, and so are direct male descendants

That's .5% of the world's population, and it's only the males.

Now, it's pretty unlikely for me, but I can only go back about 4 generations, and some of them were gypsies.  So, who knows?  And Akima?  Pretty likely that there's some Khan there somewhere...

I think Border means the Gingster is the Chinese Charlemagne, so to speak. If you've Western European blood, you've got a rather good chance of being related to ol' Chuck. I am—a friend thinks that's funny, keeps calling me "The Hammer" after Charlemagne's grandfather, Charles Martel. Something about me putting my fist through a wall*.

actually we dont really know for sure if it is Genghis or not.  The study said 3/5 people from china share a common ancestor from that time period.  Its is speculated that it is Genghis because of the harems and amount of children he fathered.

The way I've heard it, there's nothing special about Charlemagne or Gengis Khan; we're all descendants of the Julio-Claudian dynasty as well, and nearly everyone in the Middle East is a descendant of Menes, and so on.
Charles is just an example, Lurker. Anyone who's ever done a lengthy family tree knows about pedigree collapse (a.k.a. implex). Charlemagne and Genghis Khan are simply well-known examples of the MRCA (or at least the best-known such) for certain large groups of people. Probably a quite a lot of us are also descended from some dude named "Wan of Ker", too, but he never made the history headlines.

Besides, the way I heard it, "Menes" is probably more of a title than an actual person; in other words, a case similar to that LeeC is talking about for Temüjin, that is, a name has been placed on some genetic MRCA factor.

It's a title in the same way "Caesar" was a title; it's allegedly the name of the first emperor of a united Egypt, so it became a title.

KHAAAAAAANNNNNN1!!!!!!!

I love that moment.

We've seen Kirk angry, seen him really annoyed and seen him slightly pissed off

But I think that's the first time we've seen true, unadulterated, unfettered "I'm going to rip off your head and shit down your neck!!" rage out of him.

Um Wasnt the name of the guy Pharaoh Narmar or Menes back in 3000BC? Some believe it was the same person but just referred differently depending on the time/place).

Caesar came from the Roman dictator (not emperor) Gauis Julius Caesar.  The first emperor, Octavian (Later Augustus Caesar) took Caesar as his name because he was adopted in Julius's will. When Augustus named Tiberius as his succesor and adopted him, he got the name too.  By the time Claudius assumed the throne it became a name for being emperor.  The word Emperor came from the latin word Imperator meaning "Person who Orders/command (root word imperare meaning order/command, suffix -tor means a person)" and was title usually given to military commanders.

I have only a vague idea what's going on in this comic (as usual with the guest strips from this artist), but I'd guess Sam Neill must've enjoyed being in that film—I suspect he digs working on freaky pics.

When webcomic artists have "guest artist weeks", you either:

a) Discover a new webcomic
b) hit your knees and thank god for the artist of the original comic

Anyone besides me doing a LOT of "b"?

That's real pretty and all, but I sometimes wonder if people who draw in "hyper realistic" style are aware that it's possible to have characters who are under 35 years old. Even hyper-realistically.

His Woyzek/Wozzeck comic was fantastic once you worked out how to read it.

I *think*:
a) Marten's a mafia don
b) Faye's his wife
c) Angus is a private dick investigating the suicide of Faye's dad (which we see in FB, with her collapsing to her knees)
d) Faye has an affair with Angus, and Marten walks in on them

Still some bits I'm missing (what the pictorial speech balloons are meant to say, f'rinstance), but that SEEMS to be the gist.

His Woyzek/Wozzeck comic was fantastic once you worked out how to read it.
Which would be simple if we had some clue as to what it's based on. As far as I can tell it's talking about tentacle porn. You can really only get it if you've already seen whatever it's based off, making it sort of an in-joke. As far as I knew the charm of QC was that anyone could get it even if they weren't into hipster indie rock, but this sort of goes back on that and says you can only understand and enjoy it if you watch a lot of postmodern German art films, or something.
TL;DR what's it based off then?

I think we're all to accustomed to Jeph's "punchline" comic style.

Today's is just "look at it and admire the pretty pictures".

Unless of course you've seen Possession.

Thank you for recognizing and naming the film behind the guest comic!  I now have at least half an idea what's going on.  Note: It is the 1981 film Possession, not the more recent ones.

Yeah, Jeph linked to the Wikipedia article for Posession in his comment, but I missed it.

I've never seen it, and after reading about it, I'm not sure I want to...

I really did like the scenes of insanity, though.  Well done.  But my favorite shot of Faye here is the inflagrante one in the next to last panel!

It's called paying the bills so you can work on artsy, freaky pics. Really, though, Neill was stuck—as I understand it, appearing in a second film, if Universal wanted him, was in his contract for the first one (that was what kept Neill from playing Elrond in TLoTR, btw; rejoice or be relieved as you wish). Also, for all that we think of it as mainstream now, Jurassic Park was on the somewhat freaky side when it was released—new tech and all that. Neill was one of the first people to appear with dinos that weren't either obviously animated, dudes in suits, or Slurpasaurs. It seems like a slam-dunk, but the whole thing could've bombed pretty easily. I recall wondering were they going to be able to pull it off, or was it going to be, say, Land of the Lost on the big screen—good-looking dinosaurs, but clearly fake.

This will sound weird, but I would find today's strip less confusing if their shirts/jackets didn't seem to exchange color.   :|  Panels 1-4 seem to have Marten in them, but his jacket is dark in panel 1 and light in the rest.  Then it seems to be Angus wearing a dark shirt (unbuttoned almost to his navel, lol) and holding the door for Marten in panel 5, then crouching over Marten's beaten body in panel 6, but in panels 10-12, his shirt is light.  As to the in flagrante image in the next to last panel, 1. I'm not convinced it's Faye (was thinking Tai, actually, but who knows) since the eyebrows look different, 2. based on the image from two panels earlier (panel 15), she is apparently in flagrante with some kind of zombie dog-man.

I have not seen the movie Possession, but I've seen The Brood and Don't Look Now.  Can anyone who's seen Possession tell me how it compares creepyness-wise to those or other films?

I do like panels 7-10 from a purely artistic point of view.

-reason for inconsistent clothes is that the whole thing takes place over many days
-change in jacket color between 1 and 2 is a mistake though, i forgot to fill in his jacket in the second panel
-it is faye throughout, no tais here, i dont think the eyebrows look that different!

also yeah drawing people that do not look prematurely middle-aged in my style is tougher than one might think

Without the reference to the movie, the strip would've left me confused. I will say this, though: you do an awesome job with Jeph's characters.

Aha!  Thank you for the clarification.  ^_^  The "takes place over many days" makes sense.  Perhaps the eyebrow difference I'm seeing is more one of facial expression.  Also, looking at it again, the zombie dog-man thing seems to have tentacle arms (I initially thought she was restrained via more ordinary means), which makes that image more freaky, though that must have been your intention.

I think I'm gonna have to find a copy of that movie now . . .

The pit-fighting babies made me giggle, which probably means that I'm a horrible person. Perhaps I really am descended from Gengis Khan...

"Rippy the Razor"? I wondered if that was a send-up, and then I found this. Classy.

The pit-fighting babies made me giggle, which probably means that I'm a horrible person. Perhaps I really am descended from Gengis Khan...
Or maybe you're descended from Qin Shi Huang. Baby gladiators seem more like his sort of thing (at least before people started revising him). Not that I can say much, as it was my favorite part, too—but my ancestor who enjoyed suchlike is both far less well-known and of much more recent vintage.

Yeah, Rippy is a recurring "filler" character in SP, much like Yelling Bird is in QC. He also appears in spin-off strips. Like this one:

Or maybe this is a better example?

http://www.rhymes-with-witch.com/lwr112005.shtml

I think Rippy's hilarious. I fully expect non-SP readers to not enjoy today's guest strip, though. It's pretty inside baseball.

... SP is fun times, though.

Randy is probably my favourite guest artist - course that may have something to do with me enjoying his strip as much.

Did the body disposal involve the pit-fighting babies?

Perhaps indirectly. I mean, the arena owners have to do something with the losers. What works for them, can work for YB.

I knew the pit-fighting babies reminded me of something, but it took me a while to find it. Wonder Woman really seems to be getting into it... "Great Hera! Cut him good, Gleek!"

Akima, that's a pretty classy joint!  I especially enjoyed seeing some of the side activitites...  that poor wondertwin will never be the same!

As for baby body disposal, what were they eating earlier?  They looked to be pretty good sized drumsticks...

And if you tip the maitre d' well enough, he directs you through the backroom and down a flight of stairs to the arena.  Now, that's service!

What do you mean? They've always been that way. Zan and Zanna don't even have to touch for their powers…they just do. Repeatedly. Or are you talking about Jace, whom Batman is hitting on while Robin admires the Wonder-scenery?

Not that Batman would really do that. As Superdickery relentlessly points out, Batman's not gay. He's just not.

BTW, I'll bet it would also be pointed out there that Superman set this fight up. It's how he rolls, being the colossal, fight-loving dick that he is.
