Pat, I'm super impressed with how good Beat Les Troubadour is. Keep up the ass-kicking.

In related news, I just recorded three fuzzy as shit soundscape tracks. Maybe you like that sort of thing, dudes?

Quick sketch for a new song. Let me know if it's sufficiently apocalyptic.

Good day QC Forum. I broke my wrist 2.5 weeks ago. Show tonight in lower Manhattan. Hopefully there won't be too much storm damange/flooding/insanity. Playing with a cast on my left hand. Worked 3 days with a broken bone because hey, no money, no insurance, etc.. Lost 2 days of work when I got the brace on, had another cast put on by begging for a reduced Dr fee.  Been spending 6 hrs a day trying to commute to/from work since there are basically no subways in a city of millions of fuckers. Yeah.

Good to hear from you, doombilly.  I was kind of concerned since I knew you were in New York.

I am sorry to hear about your wrist, though.  Iechyd Da!

Thanks o Celt.
The fracture isn't bad. I get this cast off in just under 2 weeks. Maybe a brace after that. NY is cool, but this City really only loves the rich. I didn't lose anything but money to Sandy. But the MTA doesn't really appear to have any kind of plan. That has me worried. The water just won't get out of some of these tunnels. Most wage slaves like me have to cross the river in them to service the swells.

The Chickpeas recorded some shit with a fancy 4-track and overhead-mics at the practice space.

Sans rhythm guitar sadly.

and overdubbed this with vocals at home

I've discovered I can record directly into the line in on my computer. I have major latency issues so I have to re-align it every time, but that hasn't been a huge problem so far. I can't record anything that sounds good, but I decided I'm going to record a cover just to get my chops back in before I do some kind of lo-fi demo.

I've found the perfect song to do. 'Who Do You Love?' by Bo Diddley. It's the most insane bluesman braggadocio I've ever heard ('I wore a cobra snake for a necktie/I got a brand new chimney made on top, made of a human skull') and I think that a lo-fi, insane demo which doesn't even have any drums on it since I don't have any drums, could really work.

So yeah, that's gonna happen. Maybe even tomorrow.

Fuck it, I made a soundcloud and put the remnants of my woeful songwriting on there. Most of them made in collaboration with my buddy Thomas Mawson under various pseudonyms, only uploaded the ones with me as primary vocalist so that he can put the other ones on his page sometime in the future.

http://soundcloud.com/gareth-hughes-13

For those in a hurry, here is the best thing on it:
[soundcloud]http://soundcloud.com/gareth-hughes-13/im-hardcore-holly-how-do-you[/soundcloud]
It's a semi-ironic tribute song to a pro wrestler, who is seemingly a total dickbag. Also features a spontaneous vocal harmony that I wish we'd done other times in the song, but I tend to force Thomas into single takes and refuse to record a second time.

I've spent a lot of time in the past five years making my own electronic music using Reason and Ableton Live and broadening my horizon in the direction of ambient, dark ambient, industrial, noise&rhythm and glitch.
Recently I've discovered the music of industrial act Stendeck and have started experimenting in that direction while trying not to loose my vision of mixing industrial and chillout music.

This is my latest work in progress and together with a more industrial track I will be uploading in a few days (which might be my best work yet) I feel I am on the right track to finding my own style at last.

Relaxed industrial by Hirnfunk "Filtered Thoughts of dizzy Birds"
[soundcloud]http://soundcloud.com/crae/filtered-thoughts-of-dizzy[/soundcloud]

(I should say that I have never received any training in mixing, composing or mastering. I took singing lessons for about a year and a half to develop my inner ear for notes and harmonics but that's it. Everything you hear is self taught without using any pre-existing beats or melodies.)

PS: I know this isn't what people on this board seem to usually listen to. It's a shot in the dark. :)

edit: I can't get into the discussion right now. I'm at work and my break's not long enough. Oo

I still have no good mic, and fucked latency. This was recorded meticulously by plugging my guitar pickup directly into the computer, then playing over it (deleting little jots of silence to line it up) then singing over it using a microphone that cost me $20 five years ago. Also, my vocal sucks.

However, I feel like I achieved something, because I recorded something for the first time in months. And the guitar instrumental bit may suck ass, but I think it's worth it for the harmonic it ends on.

Just don't compress your end project so much. There are other, better, ways to achieve volume equalization.

I didn't compress it. At all. That's just how bad it sounds to plug in directly with no pre-amp.

Sounds good to me, Gareth.
Certainly doesn't suck.

What kind of guitar is it? SOunds a bit tinny but then again that´s probably the lack of an interface/preamp.
VOcals are cool, might be somewhat clearer in some parts, but whatever floats your boat.

Re-record with interface and it´ll come out fine!

I might try and record all of it with the mic I used for my vocal. It just means I end up overdubbing more white noise with each track.

Got the first mix back from the producer and it is boss. Keeping all the stuff redacted because I want there to be a clean slate when we release this stuff for real, whenever that may be. But in the meantime, just know that this is song #1 from my band's first record.

My voice seems to be really shitty when I do a vocal take by itself so as an experiment I did a one-take attempt at 'Carolina Rain' by Ryan Adams, mistakes and all. Here it be:

Thanks so much!  We all really appreciate it.

This is actually part of a larger project to write, record, release and make a video for one song a month for the next year.  We're doing it in conjunction with the studio we use, Arcane Digital as part of what we're calling a "studio residency."   At the end, we'll be doing a full length release party with all of the recordings and videos on one thumb drive rather than a cd.  It's sort of two experiments- one in writing and recording under pressure, and another in seeing the difference in taking ownership over the release of our music, rather than using the standby method of paying to produce a cd and then having a cd release party.

To be arse-honest about it, I didn't really like the vocals very much. But that's my own hang-up, because I can appreciate how beautiful a piece it was and how well the vocals fit into the song, almost like another instrument rather than as the focal point. Great production and mixing job on it too. You should be proud.

Thanks!  No worries on the vocals, we understand it's not for everyone.  We always mix the vocals low so that they act as another instrument, rather than a focal point.   For that reason, we tend to have very few choruses, or even consistent phrasing in verses.   Both the singer and I are big fans of a bunch of 90's Kansas City and D.C. indie rock bands and labels where the vocals are usually treated that way.

It's a good choice. Adds to the sound rather than subtracting from it.

And hey, listen to one of my songs - it's not like I can comment on shitty vocals.

I came up with that one night, along with Yoloween. I am not a proud creature.

Heyho..

anyone care to check out these drums we recorded yesterday and give me a quick opinion on the overall sound? :)

It´s a work-in-progress thing so you´ll be hearing a click/guitar-track with the raw drumtracks and some vocals for the drummer's orientation.

Recorded using:
2x Overhead Sennheiser
1x SM57 on Snare/Hihat
1x Behringer Bassdrum Mic

Set in a slight panorama (Overheads are turned way left and right and the rest in the middle), no EQ or Comps or anything yet.
