A Quaint Freud - The Daily Lee Roy Ruben

This is seriously weird but surprisingly good stuff.  "Intuit" is almost proto-techno, "Whyf" is a cracked-out sci-fi anthem, and "Nuun" is more discernibly "minimal" in its orientation, like one of AFX's earlier hardcore tracks. Reminds me of the more gonzo remixes that the FRKWYS series pulls out (specifically those involving Gibby Hanes). Fascinating!

--- Quote from: Boomkat ---Three oddball electronic grooves from the enigmatic German producer, AQF or A Quaint Freud as he's now known. 'Intuit' is like some weird, calcified version of Siriusmo's cheeky productions, part tropical electro melody and part martial techno groove. 'Whyf' is more eccentric, working dainty music box melody into padded, smoky Workshop rhythms, followed by the Hype Williams-esque hypnagogic wow & flutter of 'Nuun'. Check!!

Virgo - Do You Know Who You Are?

Classic House music. The title track is perfect for a late 80's night on the town, "In A Vision" is more rhythmically textured, and marks a clear lineage towards the more recent House antics of acts like Jam City. "Going Thru Life" is textbook night music, all hi-hats and nightclub piano, and the handclaps and synth stabs of "Take Me Higher" make it something of an outlier, but an interesting one.

--- Quote from: XLR8R ---1989's "Do You Know Who You Are" might be one of the best deep Chicago cuts ever recorded, its monstrous kicks, bright wandering synths, and deliciously delayed guitars creating a blueprint for all true deep house to come, from the Burrell brothers to the almighty Kerri Chandler. Pile on synth buzz, near-subsonic bass, and watery harmonies, and there's no denying the piece's greatness, which makes it all the better that Trax and Rush Hour have just re-released Virgo's only eponymous album. Featuring new artwork and tracks remastered for maximum loudness, the release shows that Rush Hour is fast becoming the best archival house label in the world.

Virgo - Free Yourself

Another House EP from the great Virgo. "Free Yourself" pulls out live drums in its back half, which is pretty cool for a House track, and the synths are evocative as always. "Under You" is a weird track with what sounds like a step rhythm, and it takes a bit to get going but it gets pretty good. "My Space" (heh) is classic electro, great for a Miami Vice car chase, and "R U Hot Enough" features some nice acid bass functions and some sampled drumming to augment the drum machine rhythm.

What is this and why haven't I heard of it?

KvP:
Dunno. Pretty sure I posted it in the last mediafire thread.

--- Quote ---Rules:

The first rule of this thread is you do not mention MF.  I am doing this because we are currently the first hit for the full version of "MF thread" on Google, so y'know, that's bad n' shit.

No hot-linking images or albums. You can re-host images at http://imageshack.us.

Ensure your tags are correct and that you have specified both Artist/Album in your post.

Upload your files in either a .zip or a .rar archive to MF, in multiple parts if the album is over 200mb. The reason for this is that we know MF is safe and efficient and allows multiple downloads. The ads on other sites, such as Sendspace, are known to contain viruses on the page. Get yourself checked out.

Post your link using code tags. It's the # icon above the policeman emoticon. This prevents the links from being traced back to the forums, lowering the chance that the wrong people notice the thread, potentially threatening Jeph with legal action.

Also, please do NOT request albums. This includes requests for re-uploads; if you miss it, try looking for it somewhere else.

Repost the rules at the top of each new page.

Headhunter & Djunya / Djg & Xi - Surefire Sound 002

More Techno / Dubstep hybridism from Headhunter, with nice Dorian Concept-esque pitch-shifted synths and a subtle wobble bassline. The B comes from (relatively) unknown quantity DJG, who seems to explore a lot of the same sorts of sounds that Headhunter does but emphasizes bass to a much greater extent. Should be a good dancefloor filler.

--- Quote from: Boomkat ---A confection of collaborations from Headhunter & Djunya and DJG & XI on the Surefire Sound label. The X side from Headhunter and Djunya is the one to pull for, twisting up technoid dub chords with a broken/funky dubstep flow to work the club in sophisticated style, while DJG & XI's 'Putney Says' rolls with a more broken percussion wound into a rollers dubstep format. Smart.

Think - Private Universe EP

(Relatively) Classicist dubstep from Think. Chopped up diva vox throughout give it a more clubby feel than most artists in this vein usually produce. There are telltale elements of rave and even trance sprinkled throughout the EP. "Naked Voyage" is excellent.

--- Quote from: Boomkat ---Superb debut from Polish producer, Think and New Moon Recordings, b/w a dynamic Jack Sparrow remix. 'Private Universe' is one of five attention grabbing tracks here, a lean but spacious dubtech strider with lush aquatic sound design somewhere between Scuba and Phaeleh. 'Short Warm Moments' presents captivating vox from Novika sailing over a more laidback rollers rhythm akin to F productions, which Jack Sparrow reworks with impressively upgraded production values. New Moon have future records from Ruckspin, Jack Sparrow, Indigo and Hatti Vatti lined up, we'd recommend keeping an eye on them...

Antena - Camino Del Sol

I don't know why I hadn't heard of this before... Truly amazing synthwave / tropicalia / pop fusion stuff from France, a lot of which wouldn't feel out of place in a Roger Moore Bond film. Production is incredible, particularly on the title track, a beautiful, bittersweet pop song with proto-16 bit synths. Just incredible.

--- Quote from: Boomkat ---Cult French band Antena were made up of Isabelle Powaga, Pascale Moiroud and Sylvain Fasy and were signed to the legendary Crépuscule label in Belgium. Those of you that know these kinda things will no doubt be aware of Crépuscule's notorious connection with Factory records, and indeed there's a similarly Factory-style sound and aesthetic beneath the breezy pop on this record. At times reminiscent of Kraftwerk and John Foxx (who incidentally produced their 'Boy from Ipanema' single) while at the same time drawing influence from Jobim and Gilberto, the sound on this album is a deeply evocative mix that is really hard to place into any kind of contemporary context. Alas, Antena hardly sold any records, and were allegedly a factor in the demise of Crépuscule, but listening now it's just obvious that they were just a victim of timing. Since then, this album has been hailed by more people than we could possibly mention as an absolute classic, blending a loungy Gallic charm with the most involving of synthesized production and the kind of perfect pop writing that just grabs you in the stomach on first listen. Think of it as a lo-fi, Casio pop amalgamation of Stereolab, Sade, Krafwerk, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Bjork and you might get some sense of what to expect - but regardless of whether or not that description appeals to you - you owe it to yourself to at the very least give this gorgeous album a minute of your time. Absolutely perfect summertime listening - a huge recommendation.
