Quantum tunneling. Or, alternatively, the explanation Jeph used in the newspost.

Ha. Well phrased. Well phrased indeed.
Come to think of it, the coffee shop, though it is where the main cast spent most of their time together pre-breakup, would probably not be such a good place for Marten and Dora to have their first meeting post-breakup - after all, CoD is WORK for everyone except Marten. Work is not necessarily the best place for what is sure to be an awkward moment, or collection of awkward moments, especially when there are customers who need sassing.
Blackjoker:
Oh hey, I predicted accurately, ridiculous hats to defeat awkward zone...aww I used my one time precognitive power for that.
Carl-E:
Keep trying, you may get lucky again!
Wait, that came out wrong...
(Eh, maybe not.)
I like that in the span of time between sightings of the Russian army hat, it's style has gone from indy to mainstream... the damn furry flap things are in every mall store and Wal*mart in the country now!
See, that awkward wasn't a big deal. But yes, in a few days/maybe a week (comic) time, Marten should go see Dora, maybe at Svens, and hash out an attempt at a less awkward future for all.
DSL:
I call "subtext" on the Soviet fur hat.

I refer you especially to Panel 2, wonderfully expressive even in Jeph's then-basic style.
