Oh, hell no.  If a friendship can't withstand a little awkwardness, it wasn't much of a friendship in the first place!  Their friendship's built on more than the underlying sexual tension/attraction they had for one another at the beginning.  If that were all there were, then yes, this would've torpedoed it.  This is nothing more than some choppy seas.

Yarr, there be a nasty storm afoot in the Sea of QC, been blowing ever since November with nary a break.

There seems to be as much romantic tension as ever between Marten and Faye.  Over the past few days (in comic time), both characters have been acting equivocally on the matter.  Faye seemed to be trying to convince herself that Marten wasn't right for her with that Toto mini-arc a while back (and more recently, with the Nautical Metaphor discussion with Angus), but it's pretty clear from the last couple strips that there's still something there.  Marten's actions have been more subtle, but equally ambiguous.  He's dismissive of the idea of a relationship with Faye in today's strip, but when he was hammered a couple nights ago, it sure seemed like he was still interested in her.

I have to say, when Marten basically begged for a punching with the "amazing sex" comment, but Faye just sat there looking rejected, it was one of the saddest things I've ever seen in the comic.  Faye too sad to punch Marten?  Daaaaaaang.

--- Quote from: themacnut on 17 Jan 2011, 08:19 ---Well, if there was any chance at all of the Marten-Faye ship limping to port, Marten's offhand comment just blew that chance out of the water. That ship is now on it's way to the bottom of a deep ocean trench. In pieces.

There wasn't any chance at all. Jeph has been hammering that point home pretty strongly in both the strip and in his comments under the strip. It's getting a bit tiresome now. We know, Jeph. I'm sure you're probably sick of the shippers right now, but please don't take it out on everyone. The forum has been well behaved lately.

I really hope you're wrong. Then again, in my circles that 'awkward zone' would last about two minutes until someone else made a vulgar remark about something less sensitive. It shouldn't be that big of a deal, really.

Now she kicks him out, and he's left in another building, away from Hannelore, too far to commute to the library, Steve is called up into active duty again, and...

OR this just defuses harmlessly.

I'd love to be able to agree with you, but Jeph has pretty much sunk the ship with a nuclear warhead. I think the only thing at issue here is Faye's natural vanity, her assumption that of course she'd be a great girlfriend for Marten and that he'd be damned lucky to have her. Marten has certainly always played up to that impression in the past, giving her a welcome boost to her self-esteem whenever she needed it.

You don't suppose that when he was plastered, he just saw a pair of fine boobs and a big round ass and lunged for them? I don't know about you, but I don't make rational decisions about relationships when I'm drunk, I think with my libido instead. Bad decisions frequently result.

I do consider your interpretation one of the possibilities, but it's also possible that she reacted with horror rather than with feelings of rejection. It's also possible that she was expecting and hoping to get the aforementioned ego-stroking treatment that she has always got from Marten before now, and was just sad because this is the first time he's ever failed to play up to her. Even when he was drunk, he still affirmed her status as a desirable and sexy woman.

That would be a huge over-reaction, don't you think? If she didn't kick him out for drunken attempts to hit on her, she's not going to do so for this... and besides, one tenant in a shared apartment can't just kick the other one out. At least not where I come from...
