8.9 magnitude earthquake hits the coast of Japan, causing 10-meter tsunami waves

Interestingly enough, recent and new nuclear power stations in the UK and the rest of Europe are supposed to be built to the same siesmic standards as those in Japan, even though the highest siesmic activity recorded is in the magnitude of 100th of the scale.
nobo:
Since 9/11, new plants in the US are required to be able to take a direct hit from an airplane without malfunctioning. As you could imagine, this has added quite a bit of cost to building a new reactor. So utilities have the option of shelling out $6-12 Billion for a brand new plant or paying for the licensing and analysis to extend their current plant's life an additional 20 years. There are plenty of 30-40 year old reactors in the US that have been given permission to continue operating for an additional 20 years past what they were designed to operate, and at a higher power output than they were originally intended for.
Johnny C:
--- Quote from: KvP on 14 Mar 2011, 21:43 ---Are we talking about actual princess characters or princess branding? There haven't been a hell of a lot of princesses in the last 20 years. They only included Pocahontas because that film didn't even bother to get tribal custom (or anything close to a "Native American culture") right, and do they count Esmerelda from Hunchback? I forget.
--- End quote ---
esmerelda is roma anyways iirc
Lines:
Yeah, she wouldn't be classified as "white". Nor a princess. Meg is also not a princess.
I think the standard few right now are Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Ariel, Belle, and Tiana. Which is annoying, because Jasmine is one of the cooler princesses. And then I don't know what they'll do with Rapunzel. Mulan, Pocahontas, and now Jasmine aren't branded as princesses anymore, or at least not very often. And sometimes Alice gets thrown in there, but I don't know why.
ANYWHO, I think those of you who donated (I haven't yet because I really don't have any money, but will when I do) should go to those blogs and tell people that instead of wasting their energy complaining about world disasters that they should use their time to help out, such as donating money like you did. Not only will you be telling that person that they are an asshole, but you will also be telling people reading the comments that they should donate money, too. It's a win win. Person gets told they're a dickwad and there will possibly be more money for relief!
