Dj Scotch Egg - Drumized [2008]

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?kctpcyzty3v
From Tiny Mix Tapes
Quote

Styles: Gameboy-gabber, chiptune, happy hardcore, experimental, 8-bit grindcore
Others: Neon Hunk, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Atari Teenage Riot, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, DAT Politics
Links: DJ Scotch Egg - Load

“Computer games don’t affect kids. I mean, if Pac Man affected us as kids, we’d all be running around in darkened rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive music.”

Most everyone has heard of that little satiric meme made famous by British comedian Marcus Brigstocke. But it would be naive to think a technological novelty so earth-shattering as the video game would not wind up affecting other aspects of our culture, both musical and sociological. In fact, by the dawn of the rave era, many people were doing the very things they had grown up watching Pac-Man do. And while the game doesn’t account for the pacifiers and glowsticks, it proved to be even more prophetically poetic in its suppositions that many of these pill-munching party people would eventually wind up chasing ghosts.

In 1982, Buckner & Garcia’s seminal Pac-Man Fever spawned Billboard toppers such as “Do the Donkey Kong” and the self-titled track. Sampling video game sounds and delivering a message of relinquishing all of one’s money at the arcade, it was a herald in breaking down the walls between the video game world and the music industry. In the mid-’80s to early-’90s, a music scene developed around the primitive 8-bit soundcards of now seemingly ancient computers and game consoles. They called it Chiptune, and by utilizing the simple sawtooth, sine, and pulse waves encoded in various consoles’ soundboards, a new realm of electronic music and composition was opened.

Soon, sequestered hardware hackers were creating home-brewed ROMs to interface with the consoles. Two notables were both designed for the original Gameboy. Nanoloop, developed by Oliver Wittchow, is a sound-editing and sequencer application that was made famous on 2002’s Nanoloop 1.0 comp. Then came Johan Kotlinski’s LSDJ (Little Sound Disc Jockey), which was even more of a revolution, as it allowed for real-time, free-hand wave-form drawing and real synth-modeling capabilities like resonant filters and arpeggiators, not to mention having a sample bank of nearly every drum machine ever made. A new world of musics made by Gameboys was spawned, with some highlights being the aforementioned Nanoloop comp and Alec Empire’s We Punk Einheitmade (released under his Nintendo Teenage Robots moniker), which was made entirely on Gameboy. Elsewhere, other artists like DAT Politics, Nullsleep, and 8-bit Weapon all use Gameboys as centerpieces in their acts.

And then there’s DJ Scotch Egg. Standing at an apex of video game music, he uses four gameboys and a mixer, manipulating in real-time using programs such as the Nanoloop and LSDJ. Given that he began his musical forays in circuit-bending, it seems reasonable to surmise that hardware hackery is still part of his trade. Regardless, Scotch Egg (real name Shigeru Ishihara) creates day-glo gabba techno splattered with paintballs of punk fury and modern minimalist composition. Born in Japan but residing in Brighton, England, DJ Scotch Egg has been offering up schizophrenic dance music for the Nintendo generation since 2005 when he released his debut KFC Core, which dealt candidly with his unhealthy obsession with the greasy fast food chain while inaugurating the dawn of a new level of frenetic insanity injected into electronic music.

His newest album Drumized is a natural continuation of that insanity. “Wwwww” will immediately initiate a flood of memories of hundreds of mind-numbing hours playing Tetris and Dr. Mario, staring into that tiny, green-tinted screen much to the dismay of your optic nerves. No matter how bonkers and demented this music may seem to get, title track “Drumized” shows a cohesive structure that befits it all, displaying a mastery of interspersing sound signals arguably on par with modern composition geniuses like Reich or Xenakis. The melding of punk and electronic music is notable especially on “Scotch Grind,” which smacks of Discordance Axis-style blast beats and showcases a need for speed that started with punk but didn’t end there. “Scotch Circus” takes you on another crazy carousel ride with short hyperblasts of drums and noise that gets all gabbery and for some reason puts the image of those weird furry beings from Aphex Twin’s “Donkey Rhubarb” video in my head. Meanwhile “Scotch Phantom” may be the soundtrack to that nightmare you keep having where you’re in the underworld and King Koopa is ripping your face off.

Some might find Drumized out of place on Load, seeing as there aren’t a whole lot of (any?) purely electronic acts on the label. But there’s enough of a punk attitude to fit in, and Egg may have more in common with other Load acts like Neon Hunk and Lightning Bolt than you may realize. Like those acts, the schizophrenic, high-octane freewheeling-ness of it all will surely conjure images of elves running around shooting rainbows that bleed crystals into a negative spiraling vortex made of teddy bears.

OK guys time for a nice big post.

First off, here is my current favorite dubstep artist/album.

Distance - My Demons

Code: [Select]
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=HHUJUHXB(Sorry for megaupload, not my link, but it works great and I don't want to split the file up.)

SO GOOD
Turn the bass the fuck up for this one.  Oh my God.  To give an idea of what you're in for, here's a YouTube link for the first track.  Max your subwoofer out.  Distance - Night Vision  This is the track that got me hooked on this guy, but "Traffic," "Mistral," and "Cyclops" are at least as good.

I'll let the link speak for the music.  If I had to describe it myself, I'd describe it as getting slowly, forcefully, lovingly fucked in the brain by an mutated Rastafarian alien with hallucinogenic precum.

I have tons more dubstep ... some compilations, a couple albums (Benga, Skream, Boxcutter, Burial, a few others), and a few huge single-track mixes.  If this gets a good reaction I'll be putting up way more.

Lightnin' Rod - The Hustlers Convention

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?yynin4jziiv
Remember how, when I posted that album by Baby Huey and the Babysitters, I mentioned that people referred back to it as one of the  founding influences of rap?  This guy Lightnin' Rod (aka Jalal Nuriddin) is basically as close to being the inventor of rap as anyone.  This album is from 1973.  That's OLD when it comes to rap.  Hell, he cut a track with Jimi Hendrix once.  Lightnin' Rod is the real fucking deal.  This album is more of a piece of poetry set to funk/soul background music and some radio-show-style accompanying sound effects, and it's all one story, so it's not exactly something to put on at the next party to get people on the dance floor.  It's not even really a "song" or collection thereof.  It's more than worth the listen though.  Highly recommended.

Oh, and someone mentioned something about ... I think the phrase was "crazy hypnotic psychadelic jam band albums that is just 1 song that goes on for 60 hours" so I figured I'd put one up.

Acid Mothers Temple - Nam Myo Ho Ren Ge Kyo

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?ch5a2yjmdfm
This is, you guessed it, a crazy hypnotic psychedelic jam album that is just one song that goes on for ... well, 65 minutes, actually.  I highly doubt that very many people will listen through the whole thing willingly if they have not previously put some pretty serious shit in their heads first, but I'm open to being surprised.  This is, as requested, Jefferson Airplane hopelessly, irretrievably overdosed on Valium.  It's really droney, but there's a lot going on in the in-between spaces ... makes for quite a head trip.

There is a FUCKTON more Acid Mothers Temple where that came from, too, if people like it.

Just for kicks, here's a sweet post-metal album.  Think Rosetta, Daturah, Jakob, all that good stuff.  Big, heavy, atmospheric, and really really good.  If you've gotten used to enjoying the kind of things I put up you'll probably like this a lot.  Anyone who enjoys the idea of adding the prefix "post-" to their music will really get into this, it's got some nice ambient bits too.

Meniscus - Absence of I

Also, any Acid Mothers uploaded will be probably appreciated. I have a couple of their albums that I can throw up as well.

Rules:

No hot-linking images or albums. You can re-host images at http://www.photobucket.com or at http://imageshack.us

Ensure your tags are correct and that you have specified both Artist/Album in your post.

Upload your files in either a .zip or a .rar archive to mediaf!re.com, in multiple parts if the album is over 100mbs. The reason for this is that we know mediaf!re is safe and efficient and allows multiple downloads. The ads on other sites, such as Sendspace, are known to contain viruses on the page. Get yourself checked out.

Post your link using code tags. It's the # icon above the afro emoticon. This prevents the links from being traced back to the forums, lowering the chance that the wrong people notice the thread, potentially threatening Jeph with legal action.

Do NOT request albums, it's annoying. Requests that have been disguised are not allowed either.

Repost the rules at the top of each new page.

Distance is SO SO GOOD.  "Tuning" has one of the filthiest, most insidious drum/bass lines I've ever heard.  I just got this album today and it is fucking blowing me away.

EDIT: the next track, "Confined," is OH GOD FUCK GOOD JESUS.

OK I promise to stop raving about this album, download it already people, this is ridiculous.

Also, is that Sigur Ros album a rip of the stream or the real thing?

On SLSK, a user by the name of sick_ has it in 320 kbps, his queue is pretty long though (214).

Perhaps I am being overly the asshole, but posting things like this, it's bad form. It's the sorta thing you should PM. Soulseek, she is a wonderful program. But it's annoying to be in a queue. It's also annoying to have queues in your uploads. I use a client that shows me the queues and they sometimes get so long it starts to lag. Imagine if this user had another 100 people join his queue after reading this post! Sounds silly, but after considering size of forum, seems not so silly! Traffic on p2p clients is not so much the nice thing.

I'm mentioning this for reference of the future happening of this event.

The music on Silver Apples was unlike anything anyone had previously heard. Simeon layered his oscillators to create a collage of sounds that seemed to be recorded in outer space and then transmitted back to earth for your listening pleasure. The lead oscillator produced a tone akin to a theremin, contributing not only to the out-of-this-world quality, but its shaky, hyper-quiver added an air of tension. A hypnotic one- or two-chord rhythm pattern of bass notes held the tunes together, while Simeon played counter- and counter-counter-rhythms. Danny Taylor proved to be an innovative drummer, producing an array of interesting beats and fills. He also tuned his drums so he could change chords with Simeon.

Tristeza - Spine & Sensory

Quote
Tristeza have been fairly inert over the last few years, but their name ought to ring some bells-- besides guitarist Jimmy Lavalle's incarnation as The Album Leaf, and other members' involvement in The Locust, they've shared bills with the varied likes of !!!, Mouse on Mars, and GBV. Spine and Sensory was their debut LP, originally recorded in 1999, but out of print for several years. It's been re-released with a badly needed new mastering job and three bonus tracks. The timing might seem a little odd (has the range of nostalgia already been conflated to the five year mark?), but the folks at Better Looking must have figured that it'll ride the current wave of uplifting post-rock a la Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky, as well as guitarist Lavalle's growing success as The Album Leaf, to find a greater audience.

Thanks to several years of nonstop touring, Tristeza enjoyed a fair amount of attention relatively soon after their formation in 1997. But they've had their detractors; their sophomore release, Dream Signals in Full Circles, was slammed by some-- including Pitchfork-- for being too "new age." Tristeza's attempt to inject their scene with some positive frequencies has been as happy to me as it is distasteful to those who need their beauty twisted, and given the more recent directions of instrumental rock, such a sound might land on friendlier ears these days.

Spine and Sensory, however, only hints at the deeper listening to come from Tristeza. The first two tracks are fairly standard pieces of instrumental rock, beginning with interweaving counterpoint guitar lines and some synth, adding interest to the texture. "RMS 2000" is where the sonic exploration begins, as delayed percussion, feedback drones, and reverbed organs announce themselves in the mix. After some more mid-tempo builds, "Memphis Emphasis" quickens the pace with a tight staccato pulse. The album sags a little in its third quarter, but the beautiful piano/synth flute piece "Cinematography" provides a textural surprise toward the end of the album, and foretells the gentle, sweeping nature of their forthcoming work.

Criticisms of "too repetitive" have plagued Lavalle's music through its incarnations. Though the songs of Spine are constantly shifting and building, the intentional lack of memorable melody can forcefully relegate them to the background of one's attention. Still, Tristeza should be approached on their own terms; their music is about movement, not of the dancing kind, but the spiraling, racing and blooming that instrumental rock can evoke. Without any member rising to the forefront, Tristeza are able to work as a true ensemble, creating thick textural structures that gesture toward the expansiveness of ambient music while retaining more standard forms.

Spine and Sensory was and remains a sincere effort to inject the decidedly emotionless lines of math-rock with some color, without resorting to the aggressive crescendos of their counterparts. It's not uniformly gripping, but contains enough moments of beauty and interest to be worthwhile. The tracks of Spine and Sensory explore a variety of rhythmic and timbrel contrasts, each managing to set itself apart in a genre that is often plagued by formulaic, indistinguishable pieces. The new age stigma is thrown around quite readily if a band employs atmospherics toward any means other than the melancholy or foreboding, and Tristeza, despite their name's translation, are decidedly uplifting. But even if the idea of warm pads and chimes still gives you chills, this record strikes a balance not found in their later work that should appeal to all.

Please upload more dubstep. Have you heard 2652's record, Aerial? It's from this year, and it's really really good dubstep. I'll happily swap you that and anything else I have you may want in exchange for Skream, Benga, and Boxcutter.

Please try to not quote whole posts! You can just snip most of it out so you're left with something that shows what you're referring to. Thanks!

More dub and Soulwax!

I will try to find something awesome to upload.

My favorite Weezer album is Ozma's The Doubble Donkey Disc.

I prefer Rock and Roll Pt. 3... less patchy, more straight powarpop, production a bit better IMO.

Since I first learned of Mountains in the Sky here, I felt the need to register to put this one up.  Here's Celestial Son:

But this is much win and does wonders for my quest to find great, less well-known music.

I am downloading that Jah Division thing right now. By mixing Joy Divsion and dub reggae it has the potential to be the most awesome thing ever!

So far it hasn't disappointed.

aside from tempo issues, which can be easily overlooked, rock and roll part 3 is an amazing record.  for air-drumming purposes, however, you gotta go with "spending time on the borderline."

Classical Corner, Part Two - Piano Concertos!

This is where the pianist gets to say FIGHT YOU to everyone else, and has smoochy make-ups in the slow middle movement.  Samples to fit all here:

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?9ytrywz3ewm  Bach in D minor (Richter)
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?tik132gilmy  Bartók 1 (Pollini)
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?nstxynggwjm  Bartók 2 (Anda)
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?z9bz00ntmnw  Beethoven 5 'Emperor' (Gould)
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?y31actc8tjd  Brahms 2 (Richter)              (link corrected)
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?xymg3jtvcwm  Finzi 'Eclogue' (Shelley)
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?iptjwbjwdxm  Prokofiev 3 (Katchen)
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?koydct1d1iz  Rachmaninov 2 (Richter)
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?jog0dejnbyz  Saint-Saens 2 (Hobson)
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?iqyj2tjziny  Shostakovich 2 (Ogdon)
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?ess4tmxjg9y  Stravinsky for Piano and Wind Instruments (Hodges)
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?me1e1jlcidx  Tchaikovsky 1 (Ogdon)

The Bach and Prokofiev are historic recordings in mono.
The Finzi was intended to be the slow movement of a concerto that was never completed, so only the smoochy bit.
The Stravinsky is a recording I made of a performance by students at Cambridge University in 1991.
You get two of Bartók's because his are my favouritest of all.

(corrected Brahms link)

How the fuck did I miss this? I could have spent the whole night downloading them if I had been more observant. Ah well, there is always tommorow. I thank you most sincerely in advance.

Share This Place by Mirah and Spectratone International

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?21xm0ztvrxc
It is not entirely shocking that Mirah’s album, Share This Place: Stories and Observations, contains an unconventional lyrical theme. Nah, considering that Mirah has always been considered a creatively ingenious oddball ever since her debut in 1997, fans have come to expect the most original of quality from the Philadelphia-born native. The surprising thing? Well, the theme covers the lives of bugs and insects. Bugs? You mean those nuisances that we spray, step on, and exterminate? Yes indeed. Only Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn could think up such a topic and she might also be the only one who could pull it off. The insect-oriented theme was apparently inspired by French entomologist Jean Henri Fabre, one of the first scientists to discover several breakthrough characteristics of insects. Mirah is joined on the album by Spectratone International, a slew of musicians including Lori Goldston and Kyle Hanson of Black Cat Orchestra. It was also produced by Steve Fisk (Nirvana) and longtime collaborator Phil Elvrum (The Microphones).

I am an apiarist so I particularly enjoyed the first track on the album, Community.  Perhaps I am just strange for appreciating the fact that she made an album about bugs, but I think it is pretty bitchin'.  :)  I figured I would post it because there has to be someone else out there that will appreciate it as well.

Guys, got a present here from ghosts of Kieffers past. It is totally sweet.

Jay Reatard - Singles '06-'07 + a newer single.
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediaf!re.com/?2wdg1k03jmt
Quote from: The Onion AV Club
Jay Reatard kicks off "Night Of Broken Glass," the first song on his Singles 06-07 collection, with the sound of real broken glass. Yes, the man is literal—although, as his misspelling of "retard" implies, he can't even get being an idiot right. Reatard's music is stupid on the surface, but it's also sharp and deeply crafty; since his days in The Reatards and Lost Sounds, his pop sensibility has been extruded through all manner of junk culture, dusty synths, and busted amplifiers. But his 2006 solo debut, Blood Visions, brought more of that hook-worship to the fore, and 06-07 seals the deal. Recycling four songs from Visions and adding tracks from Reatard's prolific flow of vinyl-only singles, the new disc bristles with jittery energy and sheer force of will. Nuggets like "Another Person" and "It's So Useless" are twitchy new-wave anthems fed through the garbage disposal and stripped of flesh, fat, and flash. But it isn't all vicious euphoria: "All Over Again" imagines a young Cure shacking up with The Shaggs, and "Haunting You" even finds Reatard venturing into Guided By Voices territory—and pulling it off with just the right blast of epic minimalism. Demented, melancholy, and in lust with rock's fuck-it essence, Jay Reatard is making the freshest, most exhilarating records in the indie world today—and with Matador pumping out more stunning Reatard singles this year, 06-07 is just the beginning.
