Consisting of Steven Ansell, originally from Sussex, and Laura-Mary Carter, originally from London, they formed in 2005 after their previous bands (Cat On Form and Lady Muck respectively) had broken up and they decided to "have a jam"[1]. They have performed over 300 live shows and released six singles since they began in late 2004. They were signed to V2 in April 2007 with whom they released the singles "It's Getting Boring By The Sea" (June 11, 2007) and "I Wish I Was Someone Better" (October 29, 2007). However following the sale of V2 to Universal, the band's debut album Box of Secrets is scheduled for release on Mercury Records in April 2008. It was leaked to private torrent trackers in November 2007, months before its retail release date. In an interview in Berlin, Laura-Mary expressed that the band's name was taken from a Ginger Rogers/Fred Astaire musical, in which Ginger Rogers had turned a pair of white dancing shoes red with blood because she had been practicing dancing so much in them. Laura Mary's cousin Colin was a famous childrens actor in his native Ireland.

The Strange Death of Liberal England also known as TSDOLE are five member band from Portsmouth, England[1]. Their influences range from folk to indie rock with this diversity creating a large number of followers, including BBC Radio One DJs Steve Lamacq, Zane Lowe and Huw Stephens. The band take their name from George Dangerfield's 1935 book.  Forming in 2005 the five piece band began life with mainly instrumental songs, however as they grew as a band lyrics began to appear in their songs. Their music is often compared to the likes of Arcade Fire and the early work of Pixies, although as they begin to form their own following they are breaking away from these comparisons and are beginning to form their own path.

Tallahassee, please? I got really burned out on The Sunset Tree (more so than normal, it's strange), but I think I'm ready for a second go at Mr. Darnielle.

OK, I will precede what will almost certainly be perceived as a direct assault on taste with the statement that integrity in art, to me, means (among other things) doing what you're good at. If that happens to sell 12 million copies, then that's fine too. And understated pop melodies and lyrics ranging all the way from heartbreak to relationships, over top of understated and none-too-experimental electronic beats and acoustic guitar, is something that I think this album does well. I enjoy it. Not so much because it challenges me or stirs deep emotions in me (it doesn't, if you were starting to be afraid for me), but because I like it simply as music. I think it's honest, at least on an aural level, if that makes any sense.

This is from Allmusic's review of her followup album, Life for Rent (which I also enjoy):

That its promise is rather modest doesn't really matter, since Dido is successful at modest songs. She has a sweet, warm voice and a knack for tuneful modern folk-pop that sounds intimate while being confidently catchy and nicely atmospheric.

Daturah- Daturah

The proclamation on their website that "Daturah is an instrumental five-piece from Frankfurt, Germany, playing some kind of ambient noise rock" doesn't come close to describing the hallucinatory delights found in their epic three-song, 44-minute debut. "Datura" is the botanical name for Jimson weed, a powerful psychoactive nightshade used in Native American rituals, the use of which results in the psychological effects summarized best in the mnemonic phrase "blind as a bat, mad as a hatter, red as a beet, hot as hell, dry as a bone, the bowel and bladder lose their tone, and the heart runs alone." The same could be said for the effects of Daturah's transporting instrumental soundscapes when experienced under the right circumstances. Even if lazily deposited in the post-rock genre these three tracks transcend the trappings of cliché and expand the listener's mind to the point of supreme enlightenment. "Shoal" opens with grandiose bombast, balancing dark and light, harsh and sublime, dissonance and euphony. "Warmachines" follows with a menacing, martial maelstrom of stomach-churning pathos and disharmony which culminates in a dynamic display rivaled only by brethren Mono, Mogwai or Explosions in the Sky. And "Lovelight" closes with elegiac movements and shimmering crescendos that peak majestically then dissolve in sonic shards. The pharmacological effects of Datura have been described as a living dream, an apt description for the transcendent music found herein.

If you liked the Dead Meadow, Mammatus, or Moccasin I've upped in the past you'll love this.  Slow heavy reverb-drenched psych-rock that sounds like a religious ceremony held by a mysterious tribe of semi-sentient cannabinoid life forms living in a mangrove forest on an asteroid floating through space.  (OK, so I'm really high.  But seriously, this album is fucking awesome.)

Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward first met to record a version of Richard and Linda Thompson’s “When I Get To The Border” for a movie soundtrack. back to onewheel.  Don't know how big you are on video games, but there's a game I've been shamelessly promoting everywhere, Audiosurf.  Take the crazy colors and explosions of Geometry Wars, the Guitar Hero 'hit the notes' antics, and your own soundtrack, and you get one of the coolest things ever.  There's a demo on Steam, and the whole game's only 10 bucks.  Plus you post your scores online against people in your area, friends list, and the world.  I've played the fuck out of it.  Buy it and play it so I'm not the only one with Ahkmed and Leech on the global scoreboards.

Jomi Massage transports you to the type of place that I like: a dark, claustrophobic, yet beautiful landscape. It is like stepping into a Tim Burton movie where he finally decided to wise up and let go of Danny Elfman. The range of emotion displayed is just as wide as film scores tend to be and goes from the sadly melancholic to happy-pissed off to depressingly lovelorn. The closest thing I could compare this to is the most depressing PJ Harvey records, but Jomi Massage also has a rock side that is sprinkled throughout the record. The music uses every instrumentation technique in the book, from a capella to straight rock to minimalist electronics. This is a very good record and effective, if a little too overproduced in parts, but certainly the type of record that I find pleasing to my ears.

The only one I'll be going to is (as always) Warped Tour. There's (as always) only a handful of bands (Against Me!, The Aggrolites, Set Your Goals, The Briggs, Street Dogs) I want to see, but I don't think $20-25 is too bad of a price.

MGMT - Oracular Spectacular

When MGMT (pronounced "management") was asked by their record label for a list of their dream producers, with low expectations they sarcastically replied: Prince, Nigel Godrich, Barrack Obama, and "not Sheryl Crow." Columbia returned with Dave Fridmann, the producer extraordinaire best known for his work with Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev. In typical Fridmann fashion, Oracular Spectacular is a glamorous mega-production through and through. Drums are massively distorted and shimmering keyboards are articulately layered as he takes the reigns, leading the duo through his daisy chain of onboard compressors, delay units, and whatever other mysterious studio gizmos and gadgets he uses to get his trademark sound. Expectedly, the 14 karat polish enhances MGMT's blend of psychedelic and indie-electro to a shiny sonic gleam, resulting in some of the catchiest pop songs to come from NYC since the turn of the millennium. The tunes sound classic and new all at once, paying homage to Bowie, the Kinks, and the Stones, while updating traditional progressions with flashes of Royal Trux, Ween, and LCD Soundsystem. It's a wonderful mess of musical ideas, ranging from the dancy disco thump and Bee Gees falsetto of "Electric Feel" to the gritty acoustic-based "Pieces of What," to the grimy synth groove on the anthemic "Time to Pretend." With tongues planted firmly in cheeks, sardonic wit is as abundant as Andrew Van Wyngarden and Ben Goldwasser spoof the stereotypical rock & roll lifestyle with lines like "Lets make some music, make some money, find some models for wives/I'll go to Paris take some heroin and fuck with the stars." Despite the ever-present irony, the songs never feel insincere and the record is inherently strong throughout, making it a solid start to their career.
