if you want, i am downloaing a torrent right now, but it is almost complete. i will upload it if you would like it. it is a collection of ginberg, burroughs, and kerouac reading their shit.

Rasputina is so...gimmicky in their shtick.....
BTW if anyone wants to explore cello music from the perspective of classical you must check out some of the albums by:

These two do sucj amazing things with cello and violin

I have the beat generation boxset as well if anyone wants that ( might be quite a bit of the same material from the torrent the fella mentioned) I also have a huge volume of Poetry Speaks which is a slew of modern poets reading their work I can upload that as well...

yes!  yes!  yes!

also, Cire27, I'm totally enjoying the Felice brothers indeed.

I'm glad people like the Matson Jones.  It's the kind of album that I just want to burn a million copies of and leave in everyone's cd players when they're not looking.  And, oddly enough, I heard enough Rasputina references that I looked them up and discovered that I really don't enjoy Rasputina at all.  Strange, huh?  I don't get it.

That was actually Poetry Speaks that I uploaded up there, those three discs.  I should probably go back and label that, whoops.  Anyway, if that generation boxset is indeed something different, or if you have more Poetry Speaks stuff that I'm missin', it would be very appreciated!  I'm always in the market for more spoken word recordings.

Thanks for Void/Faith, needed that on mp3 for a while now! My mate goes on about how it's one of the best hardcore records ever, too. You're both probably right.

Here's a nice Belgian breath of fresh air, awesome hardcore punk with some killer vocals. Incredible live band. Shares members with Restless Youth, and they're kinda similar to Justice (although not really!) and a few other euro-bands. Love the S/T song.

Dead Stop are all kinds of fun, thanks for that. I love any band that has a theme song, it's usually a sign of awesomeness like DS-13 and Charles Bronson.

If you can imagine a mix of What Happens Next?, Dillinger Four and Kid Dynamite, but far more stop/start and sounding definitely like it came from the North of England in the early '00s then you kind of have Fig 4.0 (not to be confused with the crappy American band Figure Four). To me this is an absolute classic album, one of a few that were released in a very exciting period for UK hardcore (along with bands like HHH, Imbalance, Stalingrad, Stand, Thirty Seconds Until Armageddon, Driven Down and Canvas). I'd definitely take this on a desert island, for melodic hardcore there's none better. It's smart, funny and catchy as hell.

The Beat Generation Box Set is very good, it has a lot of music, more music than poetry I think, but it is worth it for the little skits from an old comedy album about "How To Be Hip".

Also, no offense, but I genuinely had no idea that anyone under the age of, say, 35 or so actually liked David Sedaris.  Well, not so much the age 35 itself (I mean, I'll be 35 in a month and two years) but the only people I know who like him are like, settled-down married women who leave a copy of one of his books in the bathroom.  I find him insufferably annoying and not at all funny.

For real?  I've majored in creative writing for five years and most of the young writers I know are quite big on mister Sedaris.  I actually don't know if I've ever met anyone before who has actively disliked him.

I majored in Literature and have been a writer, published and otherwise, for 15 years and as I said the only fans of his I've seen are as I described.  Most writers I know have never even heard of him or dismiss him as fluff.  I like good fluff sometimes (Tom Robbins) but Sedaris just bored me as being sort of the pseudo-hip New York Times Best Seller List equivalent of Paul Harvey.

Wait, I do know a girl who is 19 or 20 and likes him.  She also likes Sylvia Plath and mewithoutYou, though, so I'm not so hot on her opinion.

Fig 4.0 is a couple from the Plight right?  One of my best mates lives with Stoz. Awesome dudes. Thanks for that then, never properly listened to Fig. Should've done really! Heard good things.

I will quietly withhold most of my opinion to stop us from getting more off topic (among other things), but--Tom Robbins, fluff?!?

IN OTHER NEWS I WILL DOWNLOAD MORE THINGS SOON.  Speaking of "fluff", does anyone on here actually appreciate twee?  Because that's what I'm thinkin'.  I'm standing by my fluff, goddamnit.  I am a happy, happy lady.

Tom Robbins, fluff?!?

Most certainly.  Compared to, say, Murakami.  I agree there are some good points in his novels but overall, as someone else said, "[Robbins] writes great sentences."  I don't think he is aiming for much high philosophy or deep meaning in most of his work other than some rather simple (but valid) ideas that other writers have expressed on a much more detailed level.  I would even say that Tom Robbins is one of my favourite authors but it is certainly not for his mindblowing ideas.  I read him as a lighter version of, say, Robert Anton Wilson.

I love good twee.  From the fluffy (Vaselines, Shop Assistants, Cub) to the not-fluffy-at-all (most Belle and Sebastian).  Who doesn't like good, solid pop music?

Stoz was the one from The Plight who was in Fig 4.0, he joined a while after this album when their original guitarist left. He'd have still been in Charlie Don't Surf abusing people's eardrums with excessive feedback at this point. Joe and Steve (vocals/guitar and drums) do The Dauntless Elite these days who are damn great too. Matt (bass/vocals) went on to do Eiger, and I'm not sure if Andy did any bands after this.

On an unrelated note, here is some music by a band called Mika Miko. They are pretty great no-strings-attached punk rock. The full-length CYSLABF is my favourite.

I find this particularly funny because the two authors I have been reading most vigorously as of late are Robbins and Murakami, both of whom have quickly become some of my favorites, and I actually find Robbins' ideas much more vividly philosophical than Murakami's.  Strange how that works!  Happy to hear you mention the two, though.  Also, I haven't read any Wilson but now I think I'll have to check him out.  That's a good endorsement.

Twee ho!  I think I'll put some more Tullycraft and some Heavenly up tonight.

Well, Robbins sort of drops his pants and waves his philosophical ideas in your face.  Murakami I consider less "fluff" because his writing is more substantive in an emotional sense; Robbins' characters and plots are, and I'm reasonably sure this is intentional, comic-book-ish.

By the same turn, I would say that Gibson's Mona Lisa Overdrive is one of the least fluffy, most emotionally resonant novels I have ever read - yet it doesn't really even speak to philosophy, it's more about deeper human interactions and archetypes.

I guess I'll stop derailing now.  I'll upload a Cub album or two if you haven't heard them; definitely one of my favorite cuddlecore bands.

EARTH-The Bee Made Honey In The Lions Skull

Quote
It is an open evocation of the primal rock-guitar sound circa 1969. Just like with a lot of late-’60s psychedelia, you can hear it piggybacking on the blues, stealing that music’s swagger, sexuality and strength. The tempos are of course about half as fast as anything played then (or now for that matter). We are still talking about Earth, after all.

Limp Wrist - Discography

Quote from: Aversion
Limp Wrist "Thee Official Limp Wrist Discography" CD
[Cheap Art]
Sheesh! 41 tracks of gay straightedge hardcore, literally, in a mere 34 minutes! I'm sure most people know that former Los Crudos vocalist Martin Sorrondeguy fronts this band, and represented herein are a slew of short, fast, to the point hardcore tracks with basic structures and all out yelling vocals that have a really dry, hoarse ring. The material was taken from their "Don't Knock It 'til You Try It" demo, the "What's Up With the Kids" 7", and the self-titled LP, with some unreleased material and compilation tracks thrown in to make things complete. The sound is no frills hardcore/punk and to be completely honest there's not a great deal of variety, so most of the songs sound similar to one another and aside from the somewhat unique air of the vocals it's a pretty traditional sound that doesn't really break any of the rules. But my guess would be that that's the point. Expect songs that tend to run an average of 30 - 45 seconds each with basic power chord rhythms, a little bit of a rock 'n' roll vibe at times, some slightly noisier riffing or guitar textures on rare occasion, and of course fairly speedy tempos (after all, the songs are short). "No Choice" is a cover by The Faith, but unless I missed something I think everything else is original material. "Define" is the first song that feels a little angrier than the others; "Cruisin' at the Show" opens with bass and comes off as a bit catchier with its solid rhythm and brief spurts of discordant notes in the distance; "Limp Wrist" is more midpaced and anthemic (as any song sharing its name with the band should be), standing as one of the most memorable tracks herein; "Brotherhood" has some forceful note bends that stand out from much of the other playing, and its bass break continues a bit of a darker edge; "Thanks" is among the more memorable of the faster and no nonsense tracks; "Angry Queen" is shorter, faster, and more pissed than many of the other tunes, while "The Ode" is midpaced and has a strong rock feel and "Complex" continues a that vibe with more of a pounding bass presence; etc. Seeing as this is the band's complete collection of recorded works there are some duplicate tracks, and most of the original versions sound almost identical, but it's still cool to have everything documented in one place. As far as the sound quality goes the recordings are a little raw (intentionally) and kind of have a dated sound to 'em, but it works fine. The guitars are somewhat loose and aren't going for an overly distorted sound, which gives the rhythm section more room; the drums sound fine and the bass tone is great (I wish it were more dominant); and the vocals rest right alongside the guitars at the forefront. There are a few different recording sessions involved here, but all of the material plays through without a hitch and sounds very fucking cohesive, so that's awesome. There's a little bit of variation in clarity and fullness, but not enough to distract from the continuity. The layout keeps it pretty simple with a brightly colored full color cover and black and white innards, including a brief statement of the band's coming together/intent, all of the lyrics, and plenty of photos. Needless to say there's a pretty hilarious sense of humor throughout, and I actually got a kick out of a lot of the content. Many of the tracks definitely have an underlying serious message, but for the most part lyrics like, "Bring on the drag kings with their big fake dicks, I'll hang with hustlers, leather boys, and punks, I'm just not down with this normal world junk," kind of give you an idea of what to expect. But there are plenty of attacks on religion, macho bullshit, homophobia (of course), etc. Also included is a little over 10 minutes of CD-Rom footage that's basically a live set recorded in Los Angeles. The quality's actually pretty good, both the audio and the visuals, considering it's just a handheld sort of thing. There's plenty of between song banter and all that stuff, so... that's not a bad addition at all. 41 tracks is a little much of this action to take in one sitting, even at just over a half-hour, but this is a solid collection of entertainingly humorous hardcore with a message, and I think things have been handled well as far as documentation and such is concerned. Not too shabby. (7/10)
Running time - 34:07, Tracks: 41
[Notable tracks: Define, Cruisin' at the Show, Limp Wrist, Brotherhood, Thanks, The Ode, Complex]
Cheap Art Records - http://www.cheap-art.com

^I don't actually like this review, but I couldn't be bothered to do my own. I'd give it a 9/10, probably. But whatever. Fast, furious, hardcore punk, relentless, like a fucking explosion in your face, spitting vocals, absolute perfection. Enjoy.

12 Oz. Mouse, the greatest absurdist comic conspiracy thriller every created.  So, obviously, Adult Swim cancelled it after two seasons.

The DVD just came out, and it plays as one continuous 200-minute film.  It is amazing.

@ Trillian: Yes, smack some bitches for me.  And then let us dance to X-Ray Spex and make out.

truely one of the best shows i've ever seen i watched this all the way through once when the whole thing was on youtube haven't got the dvd yet, what special features does it have? it is so stupid to cancel it since it obviously wasn't costing very much to make I mean besides quality, the episodes are only 11 minutes which is the shortest show running time on all of adult swim.

may i recommend EphPod? it rips music from iPods and leaves all the data perfectly intact and it's very easy to use.

Yay I finally got Mediafire to upload an album without spazzing out at me!

Thus, I give you

Eleventh He Reaches London- The Good Fight For Harmony

Quote from: Last.fm
Emerging from the Perth metal scene, Eleventh He Reaches London combine a hammering 3-guitar assault and screamo-styled vocals with ambient passages inspired by bands such as Isis and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Fierce and cutting edge in their sound, Eleventh's first full-length release, The Good Fight For Harmony, received considerable critical praise, and landed them a spot supporting Coheed and Cambria.

This is a band barely even known within the fairly small Perth, Western Australia scene, but they're one of my favourite bands full stop and an absolute sight to behold live. The good news for you folks is that the album is a good reflection of the live performances.

For some reason they do get lumped in a lot with the screamo/scene bands even despite their sound, their influences, their look, the bands they choose to gig and associate with etc. etc. etc.

For fans of These Arms Are Snakes, Isis, Fear Before The March of Flames, Pelican, Neurosis and so on.

hey guyz its my first post well i found this cool cd its called ok computer, and i heard it got on the top of some list for best cd when it came out, well i put the sendspace link below so enjoy and tell me what you think of it

Anyways, I've only been lurking for a couple of months and searching only turned up one topic, so I'm not sure if there's been a general concensus on these guys, but I must say I quite like Mute Math.  I highly recomend you check these:

Mute Math - Mute Math

Quote from: myspace
Born in the dust-laden family garage with archaic samplers, Radio Shack mics, and broken record players, Mute Math have been noisily calculating their notes for the past few years. This electro-alt rock collaboration between longtime friends Paul Meany (vocals/keys), Darren King (drums), Greg Hill (guitar), and Roy Mitchell-Cardenas (bass) has crept up on the music scene with the onslaught of a worldwide fan-base driven to their website from countless video blogs and non-stop touring.

The four piece (originating from New Orleans) has scattered influences that are apparent without being obvious, and touch on everything from DJ shadow styled beats, moments of beauty and grandeur a la Bjork, and vocals that pay legitimate homage to Police-era Sting. When asked about this vast expanse of musical territory that we are asked to find them dwelling within, Meany replied, "I blame it on the past forty years of music". They act on the idea that their magic is to be found in the mixture of countless thoughts. Their live show thrives on this random energy too involving homemade instruments, live sampling, a junked-out keytar, and the kind of freak-outs that keep any given performance worth the price of admission.

Now, for my favorite of 2008 so far, Casey Daniel's new act:

That's all for now, but I'll be contributing more in the future I s'pects.

For some reason they do get lumped in a lot with the screamo/scene bands even despite their sound, their influences, their look, the bands they choose to gig and associate with etc. etc. etc.

I like 'em but why they get lumped with screamo/scene is obvious to me.  Vocals for certain.  Not ALL of the vocals are this way, but a fair amount.

Here's a three-song single thing The Crayon Fields released a couple of years ago. 60sish dreamy twee indie pop, very nice.

They're one of my favourite Melbourne bands. They're playing a free show on Saturday afternoon in Brunswick if anyone's interested.

Finally!

Sonic Youth - The Destroyed Room: Rarities and B-Sides

It's quite probable that this is the most worthy Sonic Youth release since the early nineties! Time will tell. Once a bands albums start to get boring, their compilations get a lot more interesting. By this logic, Sonic Youth could have the best 'odds and ends' collection this side of AoL.

Michio Kurihara - Sunset Notes

Quote from: AMG
Michio Kurihara's sublime solo debut is an impressionist concept record that refracts the golden radiance of the magic hour, its nine songs drawing inspiration from nine different sunsets spanning across the calendar year. A largely instrumental effort, Sunset Notes is foremost a showcase for Kurihara's remarkable guitar work -- his leads soar like exotic birds in flight, brilliantly evoking the moods and colors of the solitary moments in time the songs capture.

Yet another post in my series of "dudes and ladies that have worked with Boris at one point in time". You may remember Michio from 2006's Rainbow. Vocals on this album are done by Ai Aso..I think I posted one of her albums a few days ago?

Not to be a pedantic dick but Michio Kurihara is more rightly known as the legendary guitar player from Ghost.

Thanks for posting it though!

I've tried, but I just can't get into Smog. It's weird, all the key ingredients are there. I want to like them, I really do. Choose just one of those albums and I'll give it a last shot.

Just pick any one of those three really. If you can't get into Smog, then I suggest that you earnestly download that Cul de Sac album a page back.

Also, Smog is really just a codename for Bill Callahan.

Out of those three, Red Apple Falls.

But I think that generally his best/easiest to get into album is The Doctor Came at Dawn.

Here is some good music from Quebec. I can't find a good review anywhere, but I'd highly recommend this. Sort of uptempo folk/rock with fiddles and accordions and all sorts of good things.

Les Cowboys Fringants - La Grande Messe

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?glnv1dywuy5
Also, on a completely different note (no pun intended ohohoho), here's some excellent but often overlooked shoegaze. Seriously, this album is nearly as good as Loveless but gets hardly any attention.

Pale Saints - The Comforts of Madness

Quote from: AMG
When thinking of the finest dream pop records from the early '90s, The Comforts of Madness tends to get lost in the shuffle. Frequently and unfortunately, the Pale Saints were disregarded as just another part of the 4AD sound, lacking distinction and relying on the clichés of the time. Though they might have (arguably) fallen into those traps later in their brief career, their debut really does stick out from the remainder of the 4AD roster as well as the remainder of the then-current scene. The touchstones -- Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Galaxie 500 -- are somewhat apparent, but their debut is certifiably unique. Noise and melody duke it out, but in an arrestingly off-kilter fashion. Comforts is really as much of a "quirk-out" as it is a "bliss-out," experimental in many ways and apparently so from the beginning of "Way the World Is." The noisy rattling eventually gives way to wobbly bass and tunefully violent Wedding Present-like strumming, whipping up a tempestuous haze of frenzied pop. Throughout the record, the trio throws in countless tempo curveballs (with no sense of pomposity) and effectively balances the blasting chuggers with levitational banks of piled-on guitarscapes. The somewhat thin production lent by John Fryer and Gil Norton (on separate sessions) actually serves Comforts well, though it may take a few listens to settle in. The somewhat trebly, un-anchored production is properly suited for Ian Masters' boyish vocals, which sound like they're just on the brink of pubescence. His vocals are just as important to this record as Graeme Naysmith's guitars, not vanishing into the gobs of guitars like your typical shoegaze. "Sight of You" (retooled from their debut EP) is the centerpeice, a lovelorn gem that sounds vaguely like the lost track to Psychocandy. In whole, this debut remains a brilliant example of insular, adventurous, and charmingly flawed noise pop.

Good idea! I should have used that as an introduction piece, so here's The Doctor Came at Dawn.

Scribbles, you are most certainly welcome for the Cul De Sac,glad that I could be of assistance that is an essential one IMO.  I have a fantastic two disc selection of Cul De Sac with Damo Suzuki which I was also thinking of sharing, and still might even though it might have limited appeal to the uninitiated.  Until then, I noticed a vague reference to this EP which  someone was going to post but never got around to it as per the search function informs me:

these songs billow outward rather than burrow under. But at the same time the music envelops you, presses down on you, and – for all its apparent self-doubts and introspection – demands submission.
