Asie Payton - Just Do Me Right

Quote
Though he was also a bluesman, most of Asie Payton's 60 years were spent as a farmer, driving a tractor on his land in Holly Ridge, MS. Living in a shotgun shack and working his fields took most of Payton's time, but he also wrote and performed blues originals, playing at places like the local grocery store, Junior Kimbrough's club, and Jimmy's Auto Care. Two of his club performances were recorded by Fat Possum records, with the intention of using them as demo tapes for a studio album. Payton's ties to his land were strong, however, and the label was unable to get him into the studio before he succumbed to a heart attack in 1997. Two years later, Fat Possum released the tapes as Payton's first and only album, Worried.

Quote
This posthumous complement to Payton's only studio disc is something of a revelation. Not only does it confirm that he was a great blues and soul singer (just check out "Back to the Bridge," with its "In the Midnight Hour" riff, or the lazy groove of "I Got a Friend," with its percolating wah-wah guitar line), but it shows the man could play funk too -- "1000 Years" roars out of the speakers straight to the dancefloor, powered by some unexpected horns, and "Need My Help" has all the power of a latter-day Hendrix song. All of that isn't to say he didn't play a lot of gutbucket acoustic blues, too; "Livin' in So Much Pain" is about as down-home as you can get. In many ways, there seemed to be no end to his passion for different styles of music. "Nobody But You" could almost have come out of the Stax studios circa 1965, while "Watch Yourself" is a barnburning R&B/early rock & roll track that kicks like a mule. While Payton's other album showed him to be a man of talent, this offers that talent to its full extent, drawn together from sessions recorded in studios and at the houses of friends. But instead of being a ragtag collection of odds and sods, the result is a soaring testimony to someone who was an unsung great in his lifetime.

Thanks for the Rheostatics, orangepeas. Nice to see that the author of one of my favorite books ever (The Tropic of Hockey) can play some pretty good gee-tar.

Alright people, I've been downloading a lot and contributing little recently so it's Manic Street Preachers time. For those of you who are not from the UK and/or live in a cave in the hills somewhere, they are Wales' finest export (slightly ahead of Brains bitter beer in close second).

There are lots of things in this post so I'll cut out the blurb quoting such that it doesn't take up a billion pages of your browser window. Here's their AMG if yer the readin' type: click.

Generation Terrorists
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?zdvbxmbbeky
http://www.mediafire.com/?0jx1pqj03zm

Much more hard rockin' than their subsequent material, they were going to release just this one album then split up (heard that one before). Thankfully, they didn't. "Motorcycle Emptiness" from this remains one of their most famous songs, but frankly it's pure class from start to finish.

Gold Against The Soul
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?xh3bzjmr5tm
Quite a change in sound from Terrorists and a far higher angst-to-guitar-solo ratio; that, and some of the finest songwriting ever. If you only download one thing from this post, please make it this one.

The Holy Bible
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?djgbjyjndpm
Widely considered their creative high water mark. I prefer Gold. Anyway, they turn the aforementioned angst up to 11 on Bible (their songwriter/guitarist, Richey, had completely lost the plot and it shows in the lyrics of the first 3 records, especially this one, quite starkly).

Everything Must Go
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?bx9byzgm0st
Between Bible and Everything, that crazy Richey character dies. Or disappears. Or gets abducted by UFOs. No one's ever found a body, and theories abound. Regardless, the show must go on. A slightly less frenetic affair than any of the first 3 but a fine record nonetheless with some outstanding individual tracks ("A Design For Life", "Kevin Carter", the title track, et al.).

This Is My Truth, Tell Me Yours
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?efdxnmr1zzy
http://www.mediafire.com/?eyzcztjzwpj

The 'pop' album at which point a lot of people gave up on them. Spawned "If You Tolerate This...", their most famous single. I actually really like it. Very mellow compared to any of their other stuff.

Know Your Enemy

This album was a fucking abortion by their standards and I refuse to upload it. Just warning you off it. Cheers.

Lifeblood
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?bbtykzxezyp
So after 'going pop' then penning an album so awful it should've been impossible for such a talented group to shit it out, no one really expected much of this, but it turned out that they thankfully hadn't completely lost it after all. While lacking the insanity and energy of their Manics-with-Richey work, the new, mature sound is really quite fine stuff.

Send Away The Tigers
Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?zlijgmexfnm
Same style as the last one but refined. Still good. First single ("Your Love Alone Is Not Enough"): catchy as fuck; will not leave your head for days.

I talk about the Manics so much that I got the weirdest deja vu typing this post.

Anyway, enjoy. Do let me know if I fucked up any of the links.

Iceland pop experimentalists Múm were formed by Gunnar Örn Tynes, Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason, and classically trained twin sisters Gyða and Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir. Formed in 1997, the group met while working on a children's play. Smárason found his perception of music changed through hearing Aphex Twin and decided that he would abandon the guitar-based concepts of his prior bands.

Dan Kelly and the Alpha Males sing the Tabloid Blues

This was amazingly hard to find a review for, which is surprising since it is really good and was pretty well recieved here in Australia if I remember right. Really Checkout Cutie deserved to be the single of 2004. Basically Dan Kelly writes a very good song. I feel terribly wanky saying things like 'imagery' for some reason but there is so much detail and imagination in his writing, even of mundane things, that you can't really get away without saying things like that. This is right up there as far as albums I just keep listening to goes.

Amok, thanks for all that Manic Street Preachers. I only have a copy of Holy Bible, which I love, so I'm looking forward to hearing what else they have to offer.

Also, that's a lot of Mum, Batgnome, which do you recommend?

@Two Sheds: God bless you sir, honest and truly, but could re re up the despiracidos album, I cant get Mediafire to work it out. As for the Say Anything Album you posted, They were my bar none favorite band in HS and I saw them live a few times, but had not even heard that they released another album. I was so thrilled I fell off of the wall of bricks I had just shat, and in response, am uploading my other two favorite albums from High School.

This is ...Was a Real Boy, the seven track alternate CD that was packaged with the re-release of Say Anything's 1st Album, and it is all really just as, if not a little better, than everything else on ...Is a Real Boy.

Taking Back Sunday's 2nd and 3rd albums (which I sadly don't have at all *wishes for albums to appear*) are trying really hard to fill some of the biggest possible shoes when it comes to stepping up their game, but they started out with Tell All Your Friends, which is arguably one of the penultimate Turn of the Century Emo records. This Disc is an Explosion of good fucking music, and me and my brother sat down at our last X-Mas and tried to figure out, between the two of us, how many times we had listened to this album, and we estimated well in the 30,000s =) If you like Emo at all, these guy really and truly deserve a listen, and if you've never been able to stomach Emo before, hit this record up, because it is still amazing, powerful, and downright dance-to-able =)

Every Friday night, me and my friends would go to our towns Teen Center, a non profit hang out space that promoted a safe drug free environment, pool table,  Basketball court, Big screen TV and N64, and a sweet stereo, and as soon as it opened at 7 PM, we stormed in, threw this album on and all, like, 15 of my friends just played air guitar until all the songs were over. Gooooood times.

Anyone who knows me in real life is pretty aware of my vehement lust for My Chemical Romance, but the reason for that is not because I never got to see Queen and need a poor substitute, nor is it because Glam-Pop-Emo-Punk is my, like, totally favorite style of music, cause it isn't.
This album was recorded in response to 9/11. The lead singer and the back up guitarist, Gerard and Mikey Way, both grew up Jersey, and most of their friends and family worked, lived and hung out in NYC, and they, like many of Americans, especially in that area, got hit really hard but what happened. When they got together as a group, they all had a lot frustration and anxiety that needed to come out, and this is how they did it. There are also a lot of references to failure and feeling useless, due to the fact that before starting MCR, Gerard Way was on his way to a promising career as an animator for a cartoon on Cartoon Network, but the show was axed at the last possible minute, after he'd diverted all his possible resources into this career path, so at 24-25, he was totally jobless, no prospects, and pretty much turned into a complete painkiller/booze addict, and he did not recover and get off the wagon untli halfway through recording their 2nd album, when the other band members told him they were quitting if he didn't get his shit together.

It's because there 1st album is really raw, underproduced, and at times a lil' scary, that I dig it so much. It captures the three feelings I remembered having the most in High School, and identified with the most:
1) Just feeling comepletely in the dark about the world outside my little ho-hum town, and realizing how powerless I am do anything for a good long while.
2) Just utterly failing to comprehend why girls were so goddamn crazy it is unbelievable
3) Crippling depression, brought on by extreme personal misgivings and identity issues.

Now, about 90% of the teenagers I grew up with have those exact problems, in one form or another, but MCR's first album does is darker and more or less carelessly than most of the other bands I remembered liking at the time. There are songs about Suicide, Vampires, Drowning after Prom Night, but theres also songs about fighting for what's yours, coming back from the dead to right wrongs (a theme they flesh out into an entire theme album, 3 cheers for sweet revenge), and simply just not taking shit from absolutely anybody about doing what you believe in. I find that this album is worlds different than there 3rd album, The Black Parade, and there is certainly a lot of difference from their sophomore album, but this disc simply has, in my honest opinion, more raw personality and emotional depth than their new discs.

In short, while MCR may not be the 1st name in Musical integrity, their 1st album rocks my socks, shoes, neckties, and eardrums on a happily regular basis.

Clintaga, I would say Where You Want to Be followed up fairly well.  It had some quality and catchy tracks on it.  Now that I am reminded of it, I am tempted to listen to "A Decade Under the Influence."  Which is a hella catchy song, and in fact, not all that bad a song.

Also, Say Anything make some pretty catchy music.  They also have Parker Case drumming for them.  Who was formerly of JamisonParker, a pretty awesome, short-lived shoegazer/pop group.  I think I'll upload their LP, now that I'm thinking about it.

EDIT - I did.

Atlas Sound is a shoegaze/psychedelic project lead by Bradford Cox, leading member of Deerhunter. This album was released in February, and could possibly be my favorite release this year.

Atlas Sound - Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?tmgjhha1puv
AMG:
Quote
Atlas Sound may be Bradford Cox's solo project, but it's clear after just one listen that there's not much that separates Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel from Cox's main concentration, Deerhunter. The same filtered and treated guitars, tapes, and percussion make and wind their way around in eerie yet lush arrangements as Cox sings repeated phrases that eventually fade out into hushed chords and murmurings. The difference, however -- and it is a difference that means a lot -- is that Cox is much more focused here, and though the album certainly fits easily and well into post-rock, he's able to better control the instrumental meandering that at times would drag down Cryptograms. Instead of acting as the default sound, it represents a conscious decision, a gentle contrast that complements and strengthens the whole, and the attention that he allows his voice (the timbre of which can, as in the warm, Daedelus-esque "Cold as Ice" or the gentle "Winter Vacation," sound downright Björk-ish) allows the more instrumentally focused pieces to acquire greater meaning. The vocals, too, when they exist, are given more priority in the mix, an emphasis that shows what a compelling singer he actually is. "Quarantined," for example, has only two lyrical lines ("Quarantined and kept so far away from my friends/I'm waiting to be changed"), but the subtle emotion that can be heard in Cox's enunciation makes it one of the best and most powerful tracks on the entire album. The album's not faultless: as with Deerhunter, Cox has the tendency to try too hard to be profound (take the title -- or the title track -- for example), wanting so badly to say something important that he sounds trite and forced, and untrustworthy, but when he's able to forget about conveying some kind of meaning and instead focuses on the actual music, his message -- one of pain and love and feeling lost, of trying desperately to understand -- is undeniable.

I noticed that this wasn't in your thread already, so I have to post it. This is easily one of the greatest albums recorded. Eno recruited some of the craziest musicians of the time to make this album with him. Enjoy.

AMG:
Quote
A universally acknowledged masterpiece, Another Green World represents a departure from song structure and toward a more ethereal, minimalistic approach to sound. Despite the stripped-down arrangements, the album's sumptuous tone quality reflects Eno's growing virtuosity at handling the recording studio as an instrument in itself (à la Brian Wilson). There are a few pop songs scattered here and there ("St. Elmo's Fire," "I'll Come Running," "Golden Hours"), but most of the album consists of deliberately paced instrumentals that, while often closer to ambient music than pop, are both melodic and rhythmic; many, like "Sky Saw," "In Dark Trees," and "Little Fishes," are highly imagistic, like paintings done in sound that actually resemble their titles. Lyrics are infrequent, but when they do pop up, they follow the free-associative style of albums past; this time, though, the humor seems less bizarre than gently whimsical and addled, fitting perfectly into the dreamlike mood of the rest of the album. Most of Another Green World is like experiencing a soothing, dream-filled slumber while awake, and even if some of the pieces have dark or threatening qualities, the moments of unease are temporary, like a passing nightmare whose feeling lingers briefly upon waking but whose content is forgotten. Unlike some of his later, full-fledged ambient work, Eno's gift for melodicism and tight focus here keep the entirety of the album in the forefront of the listener's consciousness, making it the perfect introduction to his achievements even for those who find ambient music difficult to enjoy.

Red Monkey - Gunpowder, Treason And Plot

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?zd4e13eg4xq
There's no way I can sum this band up. If you like post-punk, post-hardcore or any kind of DIY rock music then I recommend listening to them. Here's the bio from their myspace:

Quote
Formed 1996, broke up 2005. Released a bunch of records, toured all over the place. The music which you hear above is from rare and deleted 7" singles, we hope to collect these one day to make a comp LP. BRIEF BIOG: Formed Summer 1996 by Rachel Holborow (Bass and vocals), Marc Walker (drums) and Pete Dale (Guitar and vocals). First gig January 17th 1997 supporting VSS at Newcastle's now-defunct Broken Doll. First single ("Do what you feel (feel what you do)", Slampt records) recorded in February of the same year, shortly followed by a UK tour in Spring and a 3 week European tour in the summer. The bands second single was issued in Autumn '97 by Troubleman Unlimited, who have subsequently issued each of the Red Monkey albums for the US 'market'. The first album, "Make the Moment", was also recorded in '97 (busy year for a band with no manager, no publishing deal and very little money in the bank!) but was not released in the US until Spring 1998 to co-incide with the bands first (6 week, coast-to-coast) US tour. Also in early 1998 the band toured Ireland, the UK again and recorded its first (and only) Peel session. A third single was released by Kill Rock Stars in mid-98 adding to Red Monkey's renoun in the USA (very few people in the UK have ever taken much interest in the band, but they remain well respected and underground-popular in the US). A month-long European tour kept the band busy in Autumn '98. The second album, "Difficult is Easy", was recorded in December '98 but not released until Spring '99, by which time the band had completed its third UK tour and was about to embark on its second US tour - 8 weeks of constant gigging, covering both coasts and lots of other parts of the US and Canada. The fourth single, "Get Uncivilised" on Troubleman, was also recorded in '99 but not issued until 2000. The third album, "Gunpowder, Treason and Plot" came out in 2001 and was promoted with a third US tour, this time only covering the East Coast in a two week burst. After that the band became busy starting families, only playing locally in Newcastle except for one show in London with our friends Q AND NOT U in 2004, one in London with WET DOG in 2005 and one in Brighton also in 2005. The only recorded output after 2001 was a split single with Erase Errata (2003). Disbanded in 2005. Joe Mask of Leeds' awesome BILGE PUMP played extra guitar with the band from 2001 to 2004. Red Monkey played shows with FUGAZI, THE EX, ERASE ERRATA, Q AND NOT U, AT THE DRIVE IN, LUNGFISH, SWEEP THE LEG JOHNNY, SUBMISSION HOLD, BLONDE REDHEAD and many, many others. In 2006 Rachel is playing in DO THE RIGHT THING, Marc is playing in THE GUISE and Pete is playing in CHRONICITY.

HHH - Making Changes

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?kcjdwfzdptp
This is the HHH from Peterborough, UK, not to be confused with the very good Spanish hardcore band or the Swedish noise rock band who share the same name. They played melodic hardcore with a definitely UK sound to it, little metalisms to the guitars (but certainly not metalcore), utterly non-meatheaded mosh parts a world away from tough guy nonsense and vocals that shout the lyrics clearly. It's the lyrics that always made this record special for me. They deal with the ridiculousness of calling people sellouts when they break edge, macho aggression and violent dancing, thoughtful considerations of personal problems and the ways to get through them. Imagine a really bitter posi hardcore band and you're probably somewhere close to HHH. I think my favourite description of them was from an old gig flyer: "skip the spiky hair and leave the coloured vinyl at home. It's time for the H."

36 Crazyfists Bitterness the Star:

36 Crazyfists' debut release, "Bitterness the Star," is a great album, as from start to finish it is pure heaviness with vocalist Brock Lindow's unique vocal styling. Lindow's voice sets this group apart from other bands with a sound best described as a combination of heavy growls and twisted singing. When you hear his voice, you automatically know the song is a 36 Crazyfists song.

I love the lead singer's voice and this CD has been one of my favorites for a really long time.

Postal - Postal  (now Lindsey Pool)

Do you remember that song floating around on p2p networks called "Angel Pumping Gas"  misattributed to the Postal Service?  This is the CD/band that actually wrote the song.  I think it's a pretty decent CD, but mainly for just that one song.

What I'm posting here isn't quite a full discography. It almost is, but is missing a few songs from their LP, and the ones it has from the LP are live. I'll get to that a bit later if nobody else does.

You and I - Discography

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?lus0hdikesd
I don't feel like writing about it so here's something from all music. I will say though, if you like scremo and haven't heard this, you owe it to yourself to give this a listen. It is a grueling 24 tracks though. Don't try to do it in one listen.

Quote
Also unofficially known as "Discography," this 24-track CD collects everything the defunct emo band You and I did except for their sole long-playing album, The Curtain Falls. All recorded in 1997 and 1998 but released piecemeal on a variety of singles and EPs over the following years, these songs are an early example of the often-misguided mix of hardcore and emo called "screamo." Singer Justin Hock bellows mawkish lyrics over a not particularly distinguished (as in, it's sometimes hard to tell where one song ends and next begins) set of grinding hardcore riffs. The rhythm section is permanently set on their impressive imitation of an out-of-control jackhammer, and lead guitarist Casey Boland apparently didn't change his amp settings once during any of these sessions. The live tracks at the end are the same, only sloppier. The Curtain Falls, released in 2003 just as the band was announcing its breakup, is a powerful and dynamic slice of post-hardcore angst, but the early tracks collected here, while occasionally individually impressive (notably the heavy but uplifting "A Day That Passes Through Us"), are simply deadening listened to in toto.

I never realised that wasn't a full discography. It really is very good, it would be great if it weren't for the lyrics sometimes descending into clichés (Forever Lasts A Moment, with its repetition of "where's my angel" is a particularly bad example). Still, Objects Inside Clouds is right about it being pretty essential if you're into screamo, I seem to remember The Cable Car Theory even going so far as to describe them as a perfect band in the liner notes to one of their LPs.

Since I can't sleep here is some music:

Forstella Ford - Dismal State Of The Art

Code: [Select]
http://www.mediafire.com/?lomebzzm01y
This record is apparently oop, and I think it was always harder to get hold of in the US than Europe due to being on superb German label Flower Violence (best label name ever). Really good screamo that doesn't play to your expectations, and infinitely superior to the disappointing Well Versed In Deception LP. It's nowhere near a discography like the label description says, that was written a long time ago. The split it refers to was with Life Detecting Coffins on Level Plane.

Quote from: Flower Violence
They're playing emotial HC with intense power and quiet parts thrown in here and there. Sometimes they sound like older FUGAZI, but with more drive in the way of old EBULLITION bands like MEREL / ICONOCLAST / AMBER INN. This release is kind of a discography with the split LP and some more; 24min of headmoving HC.

We Are Wolves - Total Magique

Quote from: Rebecca Raber via CMJ

WE ARE WOLVES: Total Magique
Oct 2, 2007
By Rebecca Raber

First things first: Do not confuse this Montreal-based, multi-lingual trio with any of their similarly lupine-named colleagues (AIDS Wolf, Wolf Eyes, Wolf Parade) or any other band in their increasingly famous postal code (Arcade Fire, Malajube—again—Wolf Parade). Sure, their band name and location have gotten them lots of ink, but it is the furious, inherently sexy sound of We Are Wolves that sets them apart from their peers. Their sophomore album, Total Magique, is rife with sinister, buzzing keyboards, vicious guitars and stomping, danceable rhythms. And though they have an obvious kraut-punk sensibility, they tear down everything measured and precise about the genre, playing with thrilling, brutal abandon. "Magique," for example, turns a slow burning dance-punk vamp, complete with sci-fi vocoders, into a chanted, heavy-breathing climax. And even the all-instrumental tracks (of which there are three) pulse with intensity and ring with libidinous, droning organs. But We Are Wolves aren't all darkness and danger. There is a buoyancy to these tracks, and underneath all of the album's sinister, sexual energy lurks a playful heart. From childish song titles like "I Wrote Your Name On My Kite" to the earnest belief in magic that's described on several tracks, there is an underlying innocent core to this frenetic album. And the friction between its adult and child-like themes makes each insistent, visceral song palpably exciting.

Tracklist For Total Magique:
01. Fight And Kiss
02. Magique
03. Some Words
04. Coconut Night
05. I Wrote Your Name On My Kite
06. Vietnam
07. Walk Away Walk
08. So Nice, So Cold
09. Psychic Kids
10. Teenage, Bats And Anthropology
11. Vamos A La Playa
12. The Piper
13. Total Solide

I thank whoever posted JIM a few pages back.  I own the cd that came right before it and i think its better and for some reason has become my traveling music, heres allmusic for Multiply

Jamie Lidell - Multiply

Quote
Head On and Raw Digits, the two albums Jamie Lidell made with Cristian Vogel as Super_Collider, remain thrilling meeting points between the lacerating, discombobulated electronic disco of Liaisons Dangereuses and the freak-flag-flying funk of early-'80s Cameo. Lidell's Multiply is more a successor to those two albums than his first solo full-length, 2000's relatively rigid and academic Muddlin Gear. Only now, he's gone a rather straight-laced route, retreating to things like mid-'60s Stax and Motown, James Brown, pre-Revolution Prince, and oh, you get the idea. The focus here is on Lidell's affected (if occasionally affecting) voice, real instruments, and real songs. Lidell's voice is rarely treated, unlike the alien moments on the Super_Collider albums, and it will be compared to a few soul legends, though it's just as deserving of parallels to John Fogerty and semi-obscure journeyman singer Shawn Smith (who, as part of a duo called Pigeonhed, made an unrecognized precursor to Head On in 1993). With about as much effort, Lidell could do wicked impressions of any earnest post-grunge vocalist. Though he's not against using electronics to his advantage -- as on the zapping, slightly hallucinatory "When I Come Back Around," which lands somewhere around an imagined Basement Jaxx remix of "Controversy" -- plenty of songs are knocked out with Hammond organs, horn blurts, handclaps, and all the other elements to make it as authentic as any neo-soul release. Since this is out on Warp, many will question whether or not Lidell's being ironic, but it's plain that he's being sincere, despite the affectations. He really is pouring everything he has into the whole thing, but there's so much overly earnest, reverential, "let's get back to making real music" energy floating around that you can sense it nibbling away at the desire to make something that sounds like today. And if that doesn't bother you, a couple issues with this album remain -- one being that at least half of it could've been made by a moderately talented hobbyist.

Tipper - Relish the Trough (2006)

Relish The Trough features more fluid rhythms, crazy percussive textures, classic scratches and even injections of acid. Don't be fooled by the apparent calm of tracks like “Rare & Plentiful” or “Couch Barrels,” which are sublime melancholic pieces, here every tune is a step further towards breakbeat insanity. Tipper's compositive technique is totally devoted to set a dancefloor on fire, you won't have time even to think about how precise the drumloops roll, or how earth-shattering the basslines are, because all your nerves and muscles will be focused on jitterbugging, going nuts and bashing your head into the speakers.
Code: [Select]
http://www.sendspace.com/file/12oac5

Tipper - Surrounded (2003)

Since he's one of the top producers in electronica's breaks movement, Dave Tipper's debut full-length should be an event by itself. As the title partially conveys, though, Surrounded is also one of the first works in electronic music recorded in 5.1 Surround Sound, the digital era's equivalent of four-speaker quadraphonic sound (to which is added a center speaker and a dedicated subwoofer). Breaks DJs looking for tracks to cane on the dancefloor will largely be disappointed by this record, a collection of moody material more appropriate for a film soundtrack than a night out. Tipper does prove a producer of absorbing downbeat electronics; his tracks feature waves of processed guitar, effects lines that squiggle or chime in a unique way, and a loping beat that rarely tops 60 bpm, the perfect accompaniment to a dramatic modern horror film like Seven or Pi. Tipper's work often takes full advantage of the 5.1 mix: He favors an interplay of effects that ebb and flow through the mix in a phasing, circular fashion. Though early on he doesn't do much more than take advantage of modern sonics, a pair of tracks near the middle -- "Over the Coals" and "Forty Winks" -- display a subtle command of atmosphere and melody rarely heard in modern electronica. (Sasha's surprising success with downbeat on Airdrawndagger is one of its few recent precursors.) Though if Alex Paterson had been given 5.1 technology back in 1990 he doubtless would've made one of the ultimate home-entertainment records of all time, Tipper's Surrounded falls close behind.

This triple-disc box set is centered on the reissue and restoration of Jack Kerouac's three long-players: Poetry for the Beat Generation (1959), Blues and Haikus (1959), as well as Readings by Jack Kerouac on the Beat Generation(1960). The Jack Kerouac Collection (1990) also adds over a half-hour of previously unissued material. These include outtakes from the Blues and Haikus sessions, recitations from On the Road and Visions of Cody from the Steve Allen Plymouth Show, as well as a candid recording from a symposium titled "Is There a Beat Generation," which was held at the Hunter College Playhouse and sponsored by Brandeis University.

I will take a leap of faith and assume that most people are aware of who Jack Kerouac is and what this set is all about-A few pages back a few of us discussed some spoken word releases etc-I hope this serves to round out any gaps in the collections of those folks searching for more spoken word.

up next three albums by William S. Burroughs, a Phillip Glass and Alan Ginsberg collaboration and I can still do the Beat Generation Box Set if people are rabid about such artifacts from long ago....

The CD is a collection of readings by Burroughs set to a broad range of musical compositions. It was produced by Hal Willner and Nelson Lyon, with musical accompaniment from John Cale, Donald Fagen, Lenny Pickett, Chris Stein, and alternative rock band Sonic Youth, among others.  It stems from the 90's era of Burroughs as a cult figure The material performed by Burroughs on the album included excerpts from some of his famous works such as Naked Lunch, as well as a couple of items from his 1989 short story collection Tornado Alley. The track "Kill the Badger!" is an excerpt from Burroughs' novella The Cat Inside. A music video was created Burroughs' reading of "A Thanksgiving Prayer" (a poem from Tornado Alley); the reading (like the book from which it came) is dedicated to John Dillinger.

Oh, I'm sorry dude.

But shouldn't iTunes automatically convert .wma files to an appropriate Mac format? I remember it did it once, long when I used to have iTunes.

Oh well. I'll try to get the album re-upped with a more compatible format for all.

If you have a mac, try using SWITCH for mac. It has a trial period...

coldenginelogic, you are a dude that is doing it right. Thank you so much for the spoken word stuff. This thread needs more of that.
I've had an iTunes gift card for quite a while and have been contemplating on a good audiobook to get. I prefer to buy music at my local music store, so audiobooks are perfect for iTunes. What should it be? Any requests?

Also, don't bitch at me about asking for requests. This is more suggestions kids, so don't get any ideas about requesting albums for yourself. I will consider everything I hear, but I'm in the mood for a well done audiobook, not something I haven't read that I can also listen to.

No requests, but maybe some suggestions. I listen to a ton of audio books while drawing, walking, driving, etc. They are a fantastic thing. As far as I'm concerned, Lolita, read by Jeremy Irons is the gold standard. Right now I'm listening to The Master and Margarita, which is also one of the better ones I've heard.

All Cormac McCarthy titles adapted to audio books I've heard have been great. Blood Meridian, All the Pretty Horses, The Road, No Country for Old Men, Cities on the Plain---although I think this one only exists in an abridged version. If anyone has ever had trouble getting through Blood Meridian, they need only listen to the audiobook and pretty much everything about it becomes crystal clear and easy to appreciate.

The Areas of My Expertise, by John Hodgman, is easily the funniest book I've ever read, and the audiobook version is even better. He reads it himself, adding lots of extra stuff, and it features help and music from Jonathan Coulton.

All great: The 3 Lord of the Rings books read by Rob Inglis, the His Dark Materials trilogy with the full cast recording, all P.G. Wodehouse stories I've heard (the radio adaptations---not so much), most recordings of Jorge Luis Borges stories floating around the internet.

Also I want to say there are unabridged recordings of Stephen Fry reading Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but don't quote me on that.

The only one I would specifically say to AVOID is Notes From a Small Island by Bill Bryson. Normally I like Bill Bryson, but the content of the text (largely complaining) presented in the reader's tone of voice bordered on obnoxious. If interested in Bryson, get A Short History of Nearly Everything instead.

Bill Bryson doesn't like anything at all. In fact, he probably thinks you're shit just because you mentioned that in some books he whines about everything (Neither Here Nor There anybody?).

I haven't found much about these guys ... this album was made in the late 90's (they were playing a reunion show two days ago) and I don't think they got a great deal of press, but they were a house favorite back in the day and all the oldhead alumni who were at Human BBQ told me that I absolutely had to see their set, and I did, and it was INCREDIBLE.  Listening to their album, I hear a lot more vocals and much less post-rock-y song structures, and it's every bit as good as the set I was blown away by.  The two bands that came to mind quickest at first listen were Super Furry Animals and Slint.  Heavily, heavily recommended.  There's not much I can say about these guys that aren't totally my own words, but I think it's safe to say that given the general taste of this forum, most people here will probably like this album.  It's not as heavy as what I usually share, but fans of my more psychedelic contributions will probably still get into it ... this is a bit more for the general forum populace, though.

That Bryson was AWFUL so I agree with that-the HGTTG is available but I was not really awed by it myself sometimes the narrator can kill a good book
There are some fantastic Phillip K. Dick  adaptations, The Dirk Maggs Batman stuff was incredibly fun to listen to at night in bed-There are a few Murakami novels that are fairly flawless and some short story collections I have seen in the iflock store...I love The Master and Margarita-one of the top twenty post modern books period-who reads that? might like to check that out

Scribbles thanks for props-mucho appreciated I hope you enjoy the beat stuff

You may not have heard of these artist but I guarantee you've heard of their descendants. State Route 522 is a post-emo band that broke up and 3/4 went on to form Sharks Keep Moving, which broke up to form Minus the Bear. Lying on Loot is very early Rocky Votolato and this is his first actual "solo" recording (except that he is accompanied by violin. It's his first sans Waxwing.). Legend has it that this release (which is the only one under the Lying on Loot name) is the one that made him want to start a solo project.

If anything else by State Route 522 should appear, I would be pleasantly surprised.

Since there seems to be some spoken word/audiobook rumblings I will be uploading The Salmon of Doubt, and if there's demand, the entirety of the original Hitchhiker's Guide Radio series.

Seconded, certainly.

And just so my post isn't worthless, I'll upload you some Daniel Johnston.

Daniel Johnston is a singer/songwriter who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. His music isn't dependent on that fact, though, as it can be deeply touching and is always heartfelt. I'll let all music guide take it from there:

Quote
He became the singer/songwriter of choice of the alternative/underground rock scene, and at various times has had his work championed by members of Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Butthole Surfers, Half Japanese, Nirvana (Kurt Cobain was often photographed wearing a Daniel Johnston T-shirt), and numerous others. Until the '90s, Johnston's recordings were basically homemade affairs, his plain voice accompanied by crude piano and guitar playing. His narrative concerns focused mainly on lost love, the pain of miscommunication, his love for the Beatles, and comic-book superhero Captain America. Johnston's music is unflinchingly direct, almost embarrassingly and painfully honest. Because of this and his increasingly erratic behavior, he was considered a local hero in his home of Austin, TX

Yip/ Jump Music
(1983)

A home recording set straight to tape from his earlier period. Despite the raw sound, I think it contains some of his very best songs. I can see where the hissing tape noise might put some off, but if you can suffer through it, I think you'll find some amazing work here.

Quote
As for his early music, Yip/Jump Music may be the best place to begin immersing yourself in the world of Daniel Johnston. Extremely primitively recorded with little instrumentation other than keyboards, Johnston's upbeat mood makes this a funny, sometimes moving exercise in obsessive behavior. Two things he thinks about a lot, the Beatles and Casper the Friendly Ghost, are the subject of songs, along with his usual examinations of unattainable love. Not the easiest record in the Johnston canon, but a rewarding one nonetheless.

1990 (1990, heh)

Daniel Johnston's only Shimmy Disc release provides a nice showcase of the kind of spare and blunt material he excels at and contains plenty of his own brand of preaching. With his minimal guitar/piano accompaniment and childlike vocals, Johnston sounds at once bleak and innocent on nouveau church hymns like "Held the Hand" and "Lord Give Me Hope." He switches gears for some fire and brimstone, though, on the impassioned and painfully comic "Don't Play Cards With Satan" (one of three live numbers recorded at CBGB's). Johnston gets some help from Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley and Lee Ranaldo on the rousing, minor-key number "Spirit World Rising" and teams up with Jad Fair for the touching lament "Some Things Last a Long Time."

Fun (1994)

Daniel Johnston's major-label debut is, arguably, his finest moment. With considerable help from Butthole Surfer Paul Leary, Johnston has never sounded so self-assured or confident before. Some of the songs are more polished, but they're never slicked up to such a degree that this sounds like a user-friendly approximation of Johnston's style; in fact, there are plenty of tracks that return Johnston to the keyboards ("Delusion & Confusion" and "My Little Girl") for his freewheeling, primitive workouts. Exhibiting some of his strongest songwriting to date, Fun is a rewarding record that never loses its initial, visceral appeal.

All of these recommended, of course. If you like them you should really buy a copy and support the guy, I'm sure he could use it.
