  • Cogito ergo potato.

As for the shipping, Hanners looks at Martin a little too friendly in the second to last panel and looks a bit more embarrassed in the last panel.
I assumed the looks exchanged here involved thanks and pride.
I shouldn't say that, I actually do ship Hanners and Marten.

I ship Marten and Hanners. That is, I friendship them. I absolutely love their dynamic as best friends and my feeling there is as strong as any shipper. For me, a big part of that is the unsexual nature of it. A lot of male/female close friendships are built around low-level flirting and a kind of platonic intimacy. That's not how Marten and Hanners are. I love them as friends because they gel so well together without there being any need for romantic speculation.

Anyway, WOO ZERO-G MAKEOUTS

I guess the space janitor will have fun tracking down every vomit particle.
They'll fall somewhere after a pretty short time. It is microgravity not zero-gravity.
Still, those wet stains will dance around like dry dust as soon as you try to mop them up. Not envying that one.

And why is Marigold vomiting blue? (Panel 6, bottom left corner)

Hannersmarten would nice each other to death. While I imagine that would appeal to both of them right now... there's just no place for the relationship to go w/o breaking character.
It has my heart's vote, but not my mind's.

There's more to a relationship than just sex - like, you know, love. It would be pretty out of character for Hannelore to make excessive physical contact or have sex with Marten, but there is such a thing as a relationship without sex.

Dammit, Francis, you are alone in a zero-gravity observation deck with a young lady who wants to make out with you. You get in there, vomit aftertaste be damned. Be a man.

While I wasn't keeping track of the party, I think they are both several drinks away from reaching that stage.  :-P

I guess the space janitor will have fun tracking down every vomit particle.

Liquids tend to form spheres in zero G.

I don't envy the janitor his job, but it's probably not going to be a scavenger hunt for space ham.

aww... poor MarMar, she wants this to happen so badly but has no idea of how to handle it (she may have grown to rely on Momo's "social protocol" function to intervene in the nick of time in awkward scenarios but that is kind of useless if she's not there when the situation arises...)

The killer for me here is she knew going to microgravity was a bad idea and didn't warn him.
Yeah, Francis would have understood if she had said "I get terribly spacesick", it's a common enough occurrence (and he surely could think of an alternative?).

The experience of our existing space stations is that unwanted and lost objects follow air currents. Solid ones eventually get found against ventilator grills. Liquid ones must happen enough that they should be allowed for in the design of life support systems: maybe a cold trap or a centrifuge in the air recirculation.

I think Hannelore has some vague thoughts in that direction, and she's on a trajectory that might lead to good things in a future too distant to be visible from here. She has a good heart.

Something you and other new people haven't seen is a history of mistreatment of Hannelore's sexuality on the forum, and the incandescent backlash to it (things got spectacular for a while). Many people here are rubbed raw and may seem to overreact to Hannelore relationship forecasting.

Ah man. See, I'm glad I'm not the only one that saw some vague undefined thoughts from Hanners. I thought maybe I was fangirling too hard.

I'm not forecasting a relationship, either. I don't want either person to break character (one person mentioned but I'm stupid and can't quote more than one thing at a time...) and, currently, it would uber break character. However, its still a cute thing to think about.

I think the main thing is is that I relate to Hanners a bit more than the other characters. I'm not OCD, no, but I get those crippling anxieties and, even if her's are over-the-top, its nice to see I'm not crazy. I guess I'm like a mix of Hannelore and Faye, ultimately. So, I want her to be happy and I think she likes Marten. So, therefore, I ship her and Marten. But you won't see me argueing against the reasons why it could never happen ;) I'll just squeee myself to death every time something cute happens between them.

There's nothing like overcoming an anxiety only for everything to go spectacularly wrong.

I don't know if I'd prefer to see Marigold and scientist-guy (what's his name guys?) talking and maybe helping her not feel hugely embarrassed via the medium of makeouts, or if it should just cut to Marigold crying in the toilets while Hanners does her best to help her.

Oh god.
Marigold is sick all over Hanners in the toilet, causing hanners to completely lose the plot.

She tells Station that the entire station must go W.O.O.* saying That'll teach you to be breadbaskets!

A heroic couple of moments including Marigold hacking station and Marten forcing ancient Whisky down Hanner's throat to bring her back to her senses conclude the space arc.

I'm crying tears of pain and I'm calling it.

I don't think I've mentioned this before, and Jeph doesn't often draw her this way, but I just love  Marigold's profile.  Not the profile itself, but the fact that Jeph does such a good job with her severe overbite - it's very realistic, and adds a great deal to her character.

Agreed. Though, it took me a while to even notice she had one when she first showed up. Another thing is that her face has cleared up in the front considerably.

My money's on Hannelore forcing her into a very strange and very intense skin care regimen.
Marbear is definitely one of the cutest of all the characters, though. I know people like her, also, so it makes this strip ten times more hilarious.

Looking back at today's comic and trying to figure out how the chamber cleans itself: Air circulation at first thought, but at second thought, the two of them "ascended" in that chamber from a standing position to an apparently weightless position kind of rapidly. But if there really is a gradient of centrifugal force, i.e., an appearance of gravity, then Marigold's hurl would drift, then accelerate toward the surface the two of them just left, and splatter. Or am I missing something?

The whole of that chamber is in the spindle, and so has little gravity; we saw that when they first arrived at the space station and Marten pushed himself too hard.

I totally get this and I want to Hanners in a relationship too, but that doesn't mean it has to be a relationship with Marten or a heterosexual relationship either. Maybe the best option for her is a Hetero-Asexual relationship. Romance without the physical and sex part. That important part is that no matter what Jeph writes for Hanners is that it must be organic (aka sounds right in his mind for his characters) and hopefully more people will accept that attitude that you said:

"So, I want her to be happy"

Clearly, she is just human and wants to have the same experiences that other people enjoy.

Along the lines of really, really nitpicking:

Was Marigold drunk? // did Mari initiate the kissing, or did Francis?

Francis was definitely leading her to a place to watch the stars and hold hands (and zero-g makeouts). And Mari was definitely nervous about going back to zero-g but definitely wanted to continue.

But it's hard to tell if Mari grabbed Francis and drew him in for a kiss, or if Mari just wanted to stabilize for a bit and Francis leaned in for the kiss.

For that matter, it seems like Marigold isn't thinking too clearly. She hurls right after a kiss, wipes her mouth, and then leans in for another kiss?  Really?  There's such a thing as a desperate, antisocial, clueless nerd, but for goodness sake she just upchucked in a bright, well-lit, zero-g place -- presumably the remnants of space ham are floating around, in plain sight, pink blobbs of chewed-up goo -- and then she went in for another kiss?

It seems that if Marigold felt pressure to keep up with Francis, then she might feel she has to 'keep up at all costs', but if she initiated the kiss, it seems she'd be a lot more embarrassed and hesitant to continue.

Oh, I know. I totally agree. I am just in full on agreement mode today about Hanners. I just think Marten would be the most understanding. But, you know, I kinda really REALLY liked the Hanners-Sven arc. The one you posted, 1768, the panel where they just look at each other always makes me kinda sad.

Heres whats weird for me. Marten is the only character I've never really felt was...real, you know? I can't explain it. But, hes just so nice all the time, maybe thats why. So passive. And I just think Hannelore needs someone passive enough to deal with her anxieties. At the same time, Sven took good care of her that night. So, maybe she needs someone trying to change their life at the same time, too.

You're right. She is human. And, as a human that emphasizes super easily with characters, I want her to also have the same thing we as humans get to enjoy: Physical contact. And, if a hug is all she can do, then, damn, thats her sex and more power to her. So. Maybe thats why I ship Marten. Because hes the only one other then Sven (who, you know, is probably not good for her) that would let her be her that I've seen so far. I am no stranger to changing ships. But, for now, I'm going to fangirl.

(sorry for the long posts, everyone. I will stop, seriously.)

I get the awkward and the regression argument, too. But, dammit, I need a guilty pleasure and that guilty pleasure is imagining Hanners being normal enough and strong enough to try a relationship.

I think Hannelore has some vague thoughts in that direction, and she's on a trajectory that might lead to good things in a future too distant to be visible from here. She has a good heart.

As it is, people on teh intarwebs aren't very mature about much unfortunately.  It's a pitfall of a webcomic guy.  You can get away with a lot more with solid books than stuff online because you don't really have to deal with shit online.  I don't envy Jeph.

That said.

Hanners is definitely the engine the makes this comic go ever since her introduction.  And whether platonic for good or romantic down the line, the Hanners/Marty dynamic is the most interesting.

Anyway.  I'm more curious about Marbear getting teh bootycall in space and poor Marty being left without right now.

Marbear deserves a bootycall. She just threw up trying to kiss a dude. That deserves a damn metal of honor of something. Especially when she tries again. Plus, Marten just had sex like...a while ago. With Padme. Although, its been, what? Three weeks since she left? I don't know time.

@Throg, I'm pretty sure Marigold inititated the kissing, knowing full well what may happen, and trying to get it in before having to deal with the *ICK* factor.  'Twas unfortunate, but damnably funny!

I'd like to see Hanners be happy and be able to enjoy a romantic relationship as well. But I don't think she can do that without getting over her issues with touch and germs and what not. Sex is kinda icky and messy (if you're doing it right  ) and she'll need to be able to deal with that, since few guys will want to be in an ongoing romantic relationship with a girl they can't even kiss, never mind have sex with. Even Marten would only be able to stand it for so long, before some other girl who IS able to give him what Hanners can't tempts him away-guy is only human and has his needs too. Hanners may be better off anyway-considering how often romantic relationships go bad and hearts get broken in the process, it may be best that she really can't be in one.

Marten and Hannelore work best as friends, IMO. Now if in the future Hanners gets her OCD under control enough to be able to fully enjoy a romantic and sexual realtionship, and Marten's available at that time, then it'll be all good.

I 'd speculate that Jeph wants to launch Hanners toward normality as much as his readers want her to be launched, and I think it's happening before our eyes, if slowly. It doesn't matter to me whom she connects with, as long as it's someone suited for her. To be honest, I'm still sad that Marten and Faye couldn't hook up, although it would have sent the story careening in a different direction. It sounds almost like church to say it, but it's all in the hands of the creator, our "prayers" notwithstanding.
