Project Zomboid
« on: 27 Mar 2012, 08:39 »

So one of the Youtube channels I follow just uploaded a brief showcase on Project Zomboid and it's piqued my interest - downloaded the demo now and it's pretty fun!

Briefly, it's a zombie survival game with an isometric perspective reminiscent of early X-Com games in which you do what you can to survive a zombie outbreak - foraging for food, maintaining shelter and generally keeping yourself alive. The demo itself is what appears to be the tutorial level in the currently available product but gives a good idea of what to expect - despite being a 'scripted' level I've so far played through in three different outcomes, all of which have been properly scripted and catered for.

The game starts you off with a "This is how you died" tagline and as such the game is essentially a failure simulator. There's no way to win, and as the undead start to build up as you stay alive longer it's somewhat inevitable you'll eventually be brought down. The dev diaries state they're looking to build in certain conditions whereby as you play longer and the outbreak worsens, your environment will be similarly affected, such as regional power stations being forced to shut down, cutting off your power supply etc.

It's currently available through alpha funding - as popularised by Minecraft - and it looks interesting, with mod support being pledged as well as a promise to include co-operative multiplayer.

Has anybody else played this yet? Any thoughts or impressions?

Hee, I love Sips.

I also thought the game looked really fun, and I'll probably pick it up soon.
Sips retweeted this a day after he uploaded the video.

What were your experiences with the demo?

After a couple of similar fiery deaths I started messing about in it more successfully and I'm enjoying it. I'm going to pick up the full game once I sort out some financial drama I've been having since the basics of the demo show a lot of promise in itself!

I particularly like that it doesn't really seem possible to simply hole up somewhere. In the demo itself I manage to survive through a couple of potentially tragic events and start scavenging quite successfully only for me to wake up one morning with a literal horde of zombies beating down the front doors, this was only maybe three days in, so the drive is really on staying mobile I think. I've unfortunately been super sick and then super busy so haven't spent a great deal of time with it as yet, though.

It's definitely very interesting and, despite complaints I've seen about the 'hopeless' nature of the game, I find it quite refreshing to have a game where the objective isn't mowing down as many of the undead as possible towards a greater goal.

I've not yet burned down a house yet, but I have found myself suddenly surrounded by tons of zombies where I just die almost instantly.

Once I figured out how to actually attack I started surviving longer.  I'm a little mixed on the fighting currently.  When trying to kill zombies it seems like 50% of the time my attacks aren't lined up correctly even tho it looks like it is.  On the other hand, sometimes it's too easy; every time so far I've been able to just run up to the shotgun guy in the supermarket and smash his face in with a hammer.  After which, I have a shotgun, a ton of shells, and tons of food. which helps survival a lot.

I've also given up completely on trying to help my wife.  Altho, I do wonder if it's possible to get her fully healed and mobile.  It'd be cool to have a companion.

In one of my longer playthroughs I stayed to look after my wife. She got as far as day three where she finally stopped bleeding but I went downstairs one morning and the horde was smashing it's way through both sets of doors. Not even the shotgun saved me :(

Melee does seem a bit wonky. The current game version seems vastly improved to the demo so I'm looking forward to actually testing that out.
