Father of her future children?  Sounds like Jim's still dating at about half his age...

I remarried when I was 45 to a 38-year-old, and we discussed having a child (it didn't happen, but the reason is private).

Ah yes... the Standard Creepiness Rule...

Always thought it was weird the dating range for a thirty year old (according to the comic) was 22 (-8) to 46 (+16)... somewhere his math got a life of it's own. oO
22 is half +7 (30/2+7), and thirty is at the minimal range for 46 year olds (46/2+7).

I've gotten to the point where half my age plus seven seems around the age I feel.

But of course, none of the cultural references would make sense in either direction... such a woman would only know my TV references from Nick at Night.

Feh, I've known women my age who could not identify with my TV references. Being 1/2+7 my age could not help that.

And who made this formula, it doesn't work in reverse for me. I'm 44. That implies I'm still viable for a 74 year old on the prowl. I don't think so.

Since when does Faye play with a knife at COD? She hasn't done it before. Why is she doing it now? Has she been waiting to a have an impressionable youth before engaging in this behavior? I don't get it. Perhaps something is going on with her. But I suspect no one is going to call her on it. I also don't see how neither Dora or Jim are reacting to her playing with the knife.

(And where is the rest of the COD staff?)

It's stated in the news post that it's a training knife, not a real one. Real butterfly knives are actually quite illegal in a number of states (and if not in the state itself, in a number of cities and jurisdictions).

MA in our world bans anything with a blade longer than 1.5 inches. On the other hand, CoD hasn't gotten in any trouble we've seen for having a sword.

Well, you've done the math for me, at least. I'm 74, but thinking she should be no less than 65... and a retired MI schoolteacher, who served in the Peace Corps, listens to NPR, can carry a tune (my first two wives couldn't) ... and ... yeah, it would be neat if she has a waist and acknowledges each of my puns. I don't care how; a groan or a Fayesque or Fayequed punch would do.

Vascetomies were in Penny Arcade too. It is better handled here, but still hugely exaggerated. From my experience, it was two weeks of discomfort followed by years of the best sex. There do need to be other forms of male contraception, though. I wish there had been options.

Redball, if someone over the age of 134 tried to date you, that would be creepy.

I think the 1/2+7 works for someone my age (24), 20-34 seems reasonable. Anything below 20 is just too low (and to be honest, I'm still weirded out by the idea of dating someone born in the '90s, which I guess now restricts me to 21/22 and up).  As for over 34, 10 years is plenty, there's no reason to date someone older than that.

The way Faye seems compelled to teach Sam things and that there's been so much focus on their interactions leads me to think Faye's going to learn something significant from this new relationship. Curious to see where this goes.

Welcome Wright!

If you do an archive crawl on Jeph's twitter account, you'll see  that a while back he sent out a series of tweets about his own complications. He's definitely projecting them onto Jim but I doubt Jeph's trying to say that *all* vasectomies are like that :D (I hope not, anyway)

Ah yes... the Standard Creepiness Rule...
Given that the creepiness is socially constructed, I thought its original formulation lacked a gender factor. I don't think the reaction to a 50 year old woman dating a 32 year old man would be the same as that to the same age gap where the genders were reversed.

Oh, but there is! Or will be, that is: http://contraception.about.com/b/2009/05/21/male-birth-control-injections.htm

Lasts for 10 years, and completely reversible.

Had my vasectomy when I turned 40 and our only child was five. I don't recall sizzle or smell, or discomfort for more than a day. But another recollection: My vasectomy was at Planned Parenthood in downtown Detroit. My wife taught school nearby. We lived in a near suburb. I worked in another suburb a little farther out. A coworker who got his vasectomy at PP about the same time lived even farther out. It made sense for my wife to drive both our required sperm(less) samples downtown on her way to school. The first was no problem; the coworker stopped by our house on his way to work, my wife left with both samples. But on the second one, there was a hitch: He was late. It was 7 a.m. Clara needed to leave. We saw his car turn the corner onto our street of homes on 40-foot lots, drive halfway down, pull over and stop at the curb. It remained for a minute or so, then started up. Jesse got out of the car, handed Clara the sample. She took off with his and mine. She told me his was still warm.
I've told this story recently. Hope it wasn't on this forum. Stop me if you've heard it before.

And if Faye strikes up an ongoing relationship with Sam, how can it not be connected with maternal instincts? That could take her in an interesting new direction, and not just with Samantha. But I'm still trying to comprehend (relation-)shipping, so forgive me if I don't have it down just right.

I'm sure there is a quantum age gap formula out there that accounts for all the areas where this simpler formula begins to break down.

Hmm, now that I have mentioned it, I must find this equation!!!

The system works to an extent (22 I would consider to be the lower limits for the equation, upper limits without having a significant age gap (i.e. old enough to be one's mother/father) would be in the early to mid 40's). Younger than that, stick as close to your own age as possible (and beware of dads with guns or baseball bats), older than that... well, make sure that there's a mutual agreement that it's not weird.

I realise we've moved past this by now, but I'm only just reading the thread - I have passed out three times in the last few years and the first time I did lose bladder control. I think it partly depends on how hard your bladder/bowels have to work to retain control - I needed the bathroom at the time anyway.
