Don't forget that official world records are for specific conditions: Two meters above the ground, and shielded from direct sunlight. It is perfectly possible to experience and measure higher temperatures locally.

0F = -18C. So it was definitely cold when they had the school cancellation I mentioned, and I guess I can understand their justification (which was that the school buses and even some school buildings have poor heating, so it would be unsafe for the children). '
When I was in elementary school in Ohio, we had "indoor recess" if it was below 10F or if the windchill was below 0.
Then when I was in high school in North Carolina, stuff like football games would be cancelled or delayed because it was too hot. One year our homecoming got rescheduled because it was still going to be over 100 at 6 in the evening.
Hottest I've experienced was 105, and I had to spend most of that day outside working at a summer camp. Coldest I've experienced is -20, which was not in Cleveland but actually atop Grandfather Mountain in NC.

I hope it snows this year. West Coast people can't handle driving in the snow so school would be totally closed down. One has to realize the coldest temperature I can remember was a balmy -10C (14 F). If there's even an inch of snow everyone freaks out and most people can't even use their driveways. My friend from Toronto just laughs at us. There's a bit of chill in the air lately too, so maybe I'll finally get my snow day that I've been waiting a good 13 years for
