Don't forget that official world records are for specific conditions: Two meters above the ground, and shielded from direct sunlight. It is perfectly possible to experience and measure higher temperatures locally.

The cold was notable to me because I was out in it for two weeks with minimal food and shelter. Add in a 10 degree + wind chill and you have yourself some misery.
The heat was quite simply created. Stupid hot day (common in the Sonoran desert, shit gets hot out there) then you add in a very, very, very large black tarmac that is just soaking up heat. Throw in lots of heavy equipment with large engines radiating heat and the numbers start to make sense. On any given airfield it's easily 10 degrees or more warmer then the surrounding area. So the Ambient temperature we worked in on a day to day basis (you spend a lot of time outside in the military) was 115 to well over 120 degrees, hitting our record spike was fun though! I'm just glad we didn't get a SAR call.

Yes, the restrictions on "hottest temperature" are precisely becuase so many human factors increase the actual air temperature.
Sound like anywhere from 10-20 cm of snow today. I used to live further north and get less snow. Stupid lake effect. :(
Coldest day for me might just be the only time we ever got sent home from school. It was in the -40s I think, and the wind was making the power lines whistle.

What kind of backwards-ass world is it where the high temperature occurs before sunrise. That's okay, after a full day of driving rain I welcome the snow tomorrow with open arms.
I went to the NOAA website to check the weather. Currently for my area there is a Flood Watch, Winter Storm Warning, and High Wind Warning.

...Oh, I didn't know you lived in the UP.
