ink slinger:
Can't Marten just, you know, rent a car?
--- Quote ---Edit: Ah, you do use the same word as us in the UK. Elk (Älg). It's just you Americans being weird again.
--- End quote ---
Let's just nix the word "elk." Moose shall be moose, and the animal known as elk (in N. America) shall be called wapiti.
Also, apparently wapiti are called elk because European explorers thought that they resembled moose.
Lubricus:
I guess Marten might not have a driver's license. That would be quite typical of him.

The closer to mutual intelligibility the Northern languages are, the better! The Normans are the worst!
Pfft, needing fancy words for Pig-meat! Pansies!
Blood-Tree:
I think you're getting moose and elk confused with reindeer.
Near Lurker:
Reindeer? You mean caribou?
My first thought was "of course Marten doesn't have a driver's license," but it occurred to me - you really can't get around California without a driver's license, can you? The Northeast, shit as it is, has some of the best public transportation in this godforsaken country. Even in the heart of Los Angeles, I hear, you absolutely need a car. (I think San Francisco is better - maybe Marten's from San Francisco?)
Also, I looked it up - by bus, he could leave Northampton at 10 and reach Montpelier at 2, then leave Montpelier at 3 AM to reach Northampton at 11. There's bus service from Montpelier to Stowe, but I'm not sure what the hours are.
