I never heard of Ellen Allien, sheltered person that I am. Had to make sure the woman wasn't the Ellen of earlier QC comics. Allien's bio seems to make her twice Earlier Ellen's age.

I never heard of her as well. But Marten seems to know her.

I consider it funny how the first panel of many comics seems to answer/confirm the stuff being mentioned in this thread.

Know of her, perhaps. She seems to be pretty famous among DJs and DJ connoisseurs, for all that Jeph's rendering of her looks remarkably like someone who once tried to teach Derrida to moray eels.

She is also "so ashamed." Perhaps ironically?

Also, Marten ... she's RIGHT THERE.

And this is to test your color vision, to solve  the whole dress colour thing.

I got 28. Apparently, I suck at green-blue and red-orange.

I got 16. My weak spot is in the yellow-green range.

Very unlikely, I think.  It's one thing for Jeph to include a real person as a cameo, but getting her involved in a story arc would surely be a step too far.

Anyway, Marten is dazzled by her fame, and his brain is currently rebooting.

She's embarrassed about having been beaten at beer pong.

Also, she's much cuter in the comic.
Gotta have to listen to some of her sets when I get home.

Yeah, that'd be kinda weird unless thoroughly discussed with the person in question beforehand. Also about how old is Marten in-universe? Not that age would be a huge thing given the event they're attending, but still.  :-)

One episode of BSG in particular was severely triggering for many of us.

For that matter, a lot of Trans women really identified with Zoe in "Caprica"
Do I look male to you.... FRACK!!

Which particular bit did you have in mind? I'm curious.

Heh, I wasn't even aware that an important character in Caprica was named Zoe. Hadn't seen the show yet, but started today because you reminded me of it (and it's given me sads). Was just thinking of Baltar's Cylon Detection Device at the time.

For anyone who's wondering, I ran Ellen's lines through Google Translate, and she's really embarrassed that Maurice was able to beat her in Beer Pong.

Well, "it embarrasses me so" sounds to me (as a non-native speaker in English) like the German "Es beschämt mich so sehr", which is rather old fashioned, and doesn't catch the whole meaning of the sentence as well. I consider Soulsynger's translation more fitting: "It's so embarrassing to me"

What ankhtahr said.

I assume, though, that Jeph was going for something along the lines of "this is awkward". If you have "Oh my gosh, this is awkward" anywhere in one of 'em American highschool girl movies, it will mostly be translated as "Oh mein Gott, das ist mir soooo peinlich!"

Speaking of famous Germans, I have listened to Ellen Allien's stuff, and it is very good, but when I see random German in an English-language work, I hear another, quite different, voice declaring: "I don't speak German, but I can if you like."

Mind you, Wikipedia shots tend to bring out the absolute worst in people's appearances. (It's weird, it's not just because they tend to be candid shots (because the set up shots aren't under CC-BY-SA or any less restrictive license), because Wikipedia shots tend to be WORSE than most candid shots.)

Chose to go with the most true-to-life appearance of her I could find on the nets. Lucky coincidence for me it was also on her wiki page.
I don't go to the staged professional shoots for references about what people look like. :-D

There are a few other pictures of her floating around which would've also proven my point. (Which btw. was not that she wasn't cute at all. Just that in my eyes Jeph seems to have depicted here somewhat cuter or even younger than her real life self.)

Honestly, I think it mainly needed for her to look closer to her age, then it would've looked fine (what he drew looks like a 20-something, when... *hits up Google* damn, she does look good for ~44).

But, my point was that Wikipedia shots have a talent for making even good looking people look horrible, when they don't look that bad in real life or in other candid shots.

That's actually one thing I've noticed in Jeph's art - he draws a comic of 20-somethings, so he has trouble making someone look older than mid 30s.

I can't decide whether Amir was lampshaded or not (he was 35, and looked mid 20s), and Hannerdad, Hannermom, and Jim look their ages, but Veronica and Henry don't look anywhere near their ages. I mean, ffs, Henry looks like he's in his 30s or 40s, except for going gray early, when Word of Author is that he's in his late 50s.

And, I second that comment on Aethien's avatar.

I'm not a native (of the English language, I'm actually German), but "it embarrasses me (so)" feels/looks/sounds pretty weird to me, like something a German would say, you know one of those things that give away that you're a foreigner.
I think, "I feel so embarrassed" would be the best translation as it includes that "undertone" that ankhtahr mentions.

I scored a perfect zero!  :-D  It's a pity the test doesn't tell you into which percentile you fall. Or whether the distribution is Gaussian.
If you answer the demographics questions and get a report, it does show you on a scale of 0-99, but you might have to save it as a graphic and them impose a decile break down on it graphicly to get a percentile number.

I scored an 11, but I don't think that translates to my percentile.

I'm not a native (of the English language, I'm actually German), but "it embarrasses me (so)" feels/looks/sounds pretty weird to me, like something a German would say, you know one of those things that give away that you're a foreigner.

While technicly both "I feel so embarrassed." and "It embarrasses me so." are both perfectly acceptable English, the latter has the feeling for this native speaker of being a little old fashioned, bordering on archaic. Like, I would expect to hear it from a Civil War or Victorian era period piece. Still, I think a modern American wouldn't bother mentioning the word "feel", as feelings would be implied in the word "embarrass". So, to sound like a native, "This is so embarrassing." would do it more convincingly.

200 for me.

I expected to be a lot worse, actually.

What allowed me to do as good as I did was to sort by brightness, and not hue. One of the coping skills that I've developed over the decades, I guess.

Now, if you ask me to name what any of those colours actually are, or change the test so there is a bit of white space between the swatches, I'm pretty sure I'd get a record fail score.

Es ist mir so peinlich = "It is so embarrassing".

A better translation would be "I'm so embarrassed".  In German people generally use "es ist mir" rather than "ich bin" (because the form "I am" would be taken to mean one is the emotion rather than one feels the emotion).
