The term "vanilla" is not in opposition to chocolate, but is a way of saying "plain". 

"whitebread" is also often used in the same context.  That does not mean S&M is necessarily "pumpernickel" (or rye, for that matter).

No, I think people just aren't used to good vanilla ice cream.
