Gee, this doesn't look set up by Momo at all. No, sir.

The drink from which the word is taken was specifically Moxie.

Funny thing, the only reason I'd heard of the term or the drink at all is from recently reading Stephen King's 11/22/63.

Momo is awesome.  I'm a bit surprised she knew all that about May after only having met her less than a minute before.
Momo is an AI. She doesn't need to wear glasses to run Augmented Reality, it is her natural medium. She's instantly aware of Dale's shift-hours too.

It's interesting that she's running with Japanese greeting body-language, which generally she does not. Possibly because it is her home, or maybe she's playing the Yamato nadeshiko for May's benefit. Her iron fist is grinning through the velvet glove a little though. I approve.

Momo went with the Japanese style greetings when she occupied her older chassis.

I also approve of her method of dealing with an extremely rude and crude entity.

Yamato nadeshiko

I have to say I normally prefer my women a bit more brash and shield maiden esque, but there is a certain appeal to the Yamato nadeshiko. An iron fist wrapped in silk remains an iron fist, even if it is briefly a bit more pleasant to be smacked with then just the shield maiden's axe/gauntlet.

Also I don't think Momo would know Dale's exact shift. I think she's guessing from the close time of the pizza place and the times they've ordered before and Dale has delivered, including Dale's previous truce offering. Further support: Shifts really aren't put online at any restaurant I've worked for, but they can be easily figured out via deductive reasoning. Elementary my dear Marbear!

Random Japanese body language note. I've picked up holding a flat hand straight up by my face with a slight nod of a bow as a non-verbal apology. I have no idea where I picked it up, but it is normal in Japan.

Momo usually doesn't need to carry out her threats.

Clinton and a mother board are the only ones I recall her frying.  And I guess she pounded Pintsize and the squirrel.

In none of those cases do I recall threats, mind ...

...Or Momo could've been *reeeeally* sneaky and simply bribed and/or explained the situation to the manager of the pizza place to get him to give Dale that pizza last. That probably wouldn't be "AI" enough for you guys, though. =P

That aside, even if Jeph should decide to write something as dark as that, I don't think it would fit in with Momo's character either, she's not that nasty a person, and it also wouldn't make sense in the context of her civil rights interest.

I agree with this. I think the fact that she's giving this fake threat is an indication that Robot Jail either treats its inmates about as well as can be expected or they hide it pretty damn well. Otherwise I imagine Momo wouldn't find it tasteful to make those sort of fake threats and probably approach May differently.

Also, add me to the list of people that find her absolutely amazing right now.

So,  nobody here's either made or received a hyperbolic threat IRL they knew to be hyperbolic and to not take seriously? Because the overreaction to the banter in the strip is often (unwittingly) more entertaining than the banter itself, which is pretty entertaining.

I find that amusing considering your namesake.

Conversations like this occur not because everyone fails to recognize hyperbole (or sarcasm or whatever), but because if they acknowledged it there would be less to talk about. And by talk, I mean my signature.

We're already taking things too seriously by discussing a webcomic in detail for which the creator's goal is to entertain people for 30 seconds a day.

Might as well make the most of it.

Here's something to consider... while the comic has covered the subject of AI civil rights before, we really have no idea if AIs have special rules/procedures for dealing with *other* AIs.  Maybe Momo, as an AI in good standing, has been "assigned" to monitor May, an AI not in good standing.  Like the police force's Internal Affairs.

Since everyone else has a theory for how Momo set this up, mine is that Dale's shift ends when the pizza place shuts, and so it was just a matter of ordering the pizza at the last possible moment before they stopped taking orders.

Yes, of course Marigold will still be up eating dinner at that late hour. She's a WoW player.

Why is Momo so sure that Dale is a good match for Marigold? If she ever comes out of her shell she'll be clingy at least for a while, and not a good match for someone with as little free time as Dale.

That was genuine embarrassment on the part of May there in the second panel.

I don't know why, but I find the little "hand gesture" hilarious.

Momo has never actually responded to anything Dickmouth Stinkface has said, though it is more than possible that Momo has heard everything and refuses to engage her.

I don't feel annoyed by May, just indifferent.

Still, I'm curious how somebody can be so obnoxious for absolutely no reason, and I can see why that would annoy quite a few people.  I guess that's part of her character, but hum..

May is a fun character, but it's getting pretty old pretty quick. If I was Dale, I'd probably have taken the glasses off again about three strips back.

Also for the poll, I want to be the AI of the scanner for something like Amazon or Google Books. I love reading so having all that text would be fun. Especially the Victorian erotica.

It might not be "absolutely no reason". Maybe you have to act tough to get through robo-prison.

On the other hand, if it's like prisons for humans, watching her mouth would be more beneficial.

I wonder if she's an abuse victim. Marigold has implied that AI abuse is something that happens. Sheer speculation of course.

Jailbirds say crazy shit all the time. I knew one who bragged about being "In charge" when he was in jail. Like it was a badge of honor to bully people in a cell.

Anyway, just looks like momo and may are shit talkin'.

The goodwill thing is interesting though. The AI's probably don't want humans to view them like May.

Maybe it would have actually been good for Marigold to hear May compliment her breasts, maybe lift her self esteem a bit.

Though the multiple times we've already seen them praised in comic seem to have had no effect. Never mind.

It's possible (indeed, likely) that May has a virtual appearance that humans can't perceive, including the equivalent of an orange jumpsuit, her serial number, crimes committed, and so on, that every other AI can tell as part of a digital handshake caused by shared presence in a space, physical or otherwise.

It's kind of hard to explain how hypothetical body optional beings with extra senses would perceive the Wired and the Real as one mostly Real occupant to others.

Now I'm wishing May looked more like Lain.

My post count has now conquered England!

Kobolds are reptilian and do not have dicks.
Reptiles are not without penises. Male turtles and crocodiles have fairly conventional single centrally mounted dicks. Snakes and lizards have two hemipenises, either of which might be termed a dick. I know nothing of the evolutionary history of kobolds, so I cannot say which is more likely in them, and I am not inclined to investigate.

The originator of the term may have been spelled Moxie, but everything since then that used it as a name has spelled it Moxy.
Not so. A moment's googling reveals: Phil Weld's OSTAR-winning trimaran yacht Moxie., Moxie Girlz dolls, Moxie feminine hygiene products, and the Moxie photo-filter sharing network. Google gives 9,150,000 hits for "moxie" and 4,570,000 for "moxy".  Clearly there are alternative spellings, but "moxie" seems to be preferred. Most image hits for "moxy" are Norwegian dump-trucks.
