I'd be sadder about Penelope leaving than about Cosette. And I have to say, I like Wil.

This said, I don't want either to leave. I can live with them being "just to the right", but them leaving completely just doesn't seem right.

It's a cliff-hanger, so it must be Friday. Cosette seems to have shrunk. I'd miss Penelope more than Cosette, but it's been a long time since they were important in the strip.

I can't for the life of me understand why Wil leaving would be considered a good thing.

I'm pretty sure that at least one of these two will be convinced to stay anyway. They may not be too important to the strip, but Coffee of Doom somehow feels more real for having a variety of employees around. It would also feel more real if there were more customers, but never mind that.

I can't imagine either of them being 'put on a bus'. When has that happened in QC? All the old characters are still around, with maybe... two exceptions? Padma is the only character I can think of right now who is just not going to make an appearance again, and even that could change.

And how often has that been?

(Plus, it's not the only bar about ...)

Not saying Jeph is writing anyone out, but Wil, Penelope, and Cosette are not exactly linchpins here.

come on now, how often have any of them said they quit or they're leaving or gone or out or words to that effect? i hope am pretty sure they're just joking.

wouldn't mind seeing the back of Cosette though. she irks me for reasons i really can't describe. the others seem to exist in a state of suspended disbelief, in regards to their sense of humour to anthroPCs to everything else, but Cosette seems not to be in the same state. sorry, that was probably really badly written!

I'd also be on board with Cosette leaving and Penelope staying. Cosette is just... weird.

That said, it's still Jeph's comic and I think it will be fine whatever he decides to do.

Would Pennelope have been the better candidate for promotion?

Perhaps Penelope thinks so... which could be the real reason behind her apparent resignation. Getting passed over for a promotion you think you deserve pretty much bites.

I see why Dora did it, though. Aside from the obvious friendship/seniority/strip importance factors between Dora and Faye, this job was always a hiccup on Penelope's resume. Not sure what kind of education she has, but she wants to be in the writing and publishing business. Faye is in a better position to build a career working with Dora and doing her art on the side.

I don't really think their resignation is meant seriously. It seems more like a small joking stab in Faye's direction.

I'm hardly a fan of Faye as she reminds me too much of some people I've known. In my experience someone with a gruff-but-jovial demeanor usually evolves into a petty asshole once they've gotten enough power-ups. So yeah, I'm comparing Faye to a bitch-type Pokemon.

Until now Faye's mean-spiritedness (and let's be fair, she enjoys making people feel like shit) has been limited by her being on an even playing field with those around her. And maybe she's nice to the kid who comes around, but that's just been playing. But put someone like Faye in charge and add some pressure? I wouldn't want to work for her. Imagine what it would be like to work for someone who's that caustic and snide when you can't snark back? And it doesn't matter how casual the workplace might be, it's never a good idea to snark at a supervisor. Even if it doesn't cause trouble, you'll never know for sure and always worry.

And to those who think they're joking, I dunno. Granted it is a comic strip, but that didn't look like a funny panel to me. It looked like two people calmly making a dead serious decision, two innocents being shocked by it (Hanners I can understand, but how out of touch must Dora be to not even expect this reaction?) and Faye resentfully having her concerns confirmed.

This feels like something plot heavy rather than jokey.

It could very well be.  But, yeah, it is a comic, so... it could go either way.  And also being a comic, Faye doesn't have to turn out for the worse from it.  Too bad RL wasn't the same way, right?

Remember, this IS "Coffee of Doom" where people come for the abuse and stay for the really good coffee.  8-)
Also, we love our customers, even when we encourage them leave.  :-D

These people have been working at CoD how long? Of course the snark will be there. It's in the job description.
Just because they love her doesn't mean they won't yank her chain.

If things reveal themselves as I think they will, I predict they will do the equivalent of "just kidding", "Cheeze, you've known us how long?"
all followed by a "It's about friggin time" and "now where are our hatssss?" as well as "Trozz" or would it be more of a "Poit" moment?

Now watch as we get Yelling Bird for the next few strips, just to give us all a wedgie.

Yes, I realize that the "shop is the new cool thing because they insult you" storyline was quite a while back IRL, but it's only a few months ago in QC time.

However, the impression I got from that storyline was not that Coffee of Doom was new but it had just been discovered by a reviewer.  I got the impression from the conversations between Dora and Marten's mother (and Dora and the guy who runs the other bakery) that Coffee of Doom had been around for a while.

I completely agree, even if I didn't say that clearly in my post... sometimes the 'new cool thing' is actually quite established and only becomes new and cool when it gets publicity. My sense is that that happened recently enough for the shop to still be riding that wave... has there been a winter in-comic since then?

Hemingway. Also the Insult Vampire strip, also her early treatment of Raven.

The entire arc of her relationship with Angus was about her allowing someone inside her personal space. She pushes people away because she's emotionally damaged and she blunts her insults with humor to protect herself from the scorn that would come from just being snarly.

Anytime someone displays a chink in their armor Faye is there to stab them with a smirk. I'm only a casual reader and I know that's pretty much her whole shtick. When it comes to punchlines Pintsize says vulgar things, Hanners says insecure things, and Faye insults.

I actually wouldn't mind having Faye as my boss
But are you basing that on strictly what you know about Faye as heard at work or are you basing that on having ready 2000+ comics she appears frequently in. We know why Faye keeps the world at arms length with biting sarcasm. Do Penelope and Cosette know that?

Well, I say good for Penelope, way to stick it to the man and hit out against nepotism.

Dora totally should have given the others the chance to apply for the role.

I guess I just don't see Faye as being obviously more skilled or deserving of a promotion than the others?

I see 'interview' as a fairly flexible sort of term that can cover a wide variety of different selection methods. The matter should be settled through trial by combat. Preferably battle spatulas at dawn.

(I would also point out that I have never claimed my opinions are sensible or coherent)

Uh, she has like at least eighteen months seniority on Penelope, regularly trains new employees, and actually gives enough of a damn about the place to think up ways to save money and/or boost revenue on her own initiative.

Faye trained Cosette, so there's no way that Cosette has seniority over her. I don't think Penelope has ever shown any signs whatsoever of being manager material - she's never opened or closed, she's never had any ideas or done anything to help the business, she doesn't really care about the shop. It's not nepotism because they are not related. It's a business owner making a sensible and straightforward decision about her business, how is that wrong?

Faye has repeatedly proven to be a valuable asset to the shop and is a remembered by customers, whereas Penelope just fades into the background.

Which sorta makes me miss the times when Penelope was a more active character.

it's never a good idea to snark at a supervisor. Even if it doesn't cause trouble, you'll never know for sure and always worry.

If there was any concern about snark being an issue, everyone would have been fired about 2000 comics ago.
