The guy looks little to nothing like Morgan Freeman and then things seemed to be turning into 'all black people look the same!' type jokes without much hint of irony.

I do not know enough about modern lazers, nor at what temperature does latex and wood burn at, to dispute either of you.  But I always though lazers were color less unless adding a light to it.  This one is so bright (could be from the added light) I almost thought it was shooting plasma!

Lasers are monochromatic (single-colored) not colorless. By the looks of it I'm guessing they're using something around 455 nm (maybe something like this) which would be powerful enough to pop a balloon, but probably not powerful enough to burn the door. As a bit of warning, if you do some of the things they show people doing with those lasers on that site, you may get a visit from Homeland Security (or your country's analog, if you're not in the U.S.)...

edit -- looks like they may have removed some of the more questionable pictures from the site. I can't find the one where they're standing on top of a mountain pointing the laser up into the sky.

My brother bought a laser while on a school trip to... somewhere abroad in Europe... can't remember where. Anyway, it got confiscated at the border. I don't think I ever knew exactly why, he wasn't really old enough to kick up a fuss and question it (or do I mean wasn't foolish enough? I suppose that depends on which border it was).

It's interesting that you can't see the beam of the red laser, just the place it points at, but when it switches to the violet laser the beam is clearly visible. Apparently the air reflects more of the shorter-wavelength violet light, while the longer-wavelength red light is absorbed by the air... Isn't that right?

More likely the blue laser is just more intense than the red laser, so enough of it gets scattered by dust in the air to be seen by the camera.

edit -- and yes, pointing lasers in the air, especially near an airport, will get you a talking-to by a law enforcement agency.

It's real, and they don't have to be powerful - don't do it. 

Remember that the point of a laser is that the beam is coherent - there is very little spread over the distances concerned, so it can be nearly as bright when it reaches a plane as across a room.

A policeman might think you are pointing a laser sight at them; A man has been killed when he refused to stop shining his pointer at the police.

Myth or not, they get pretty narked about it. I just googled "lasers helicopters" and got a bunch of stories - I'm assuming that your results will vary depending where you live. Localised source-citing!

Okay, that's much more convincing. I recall hearing something about someone refuting how airplane windshields being especially susceptible to light scattering, but that hasn't really got to do anything with being blinded by laser light. Still, it takes a lot more than a laser to make a plane crash that isn't in the process of landing.

I have a military grade green targeting laser, the same kind my army buddies mounted on their machine guns (visible green laser, as much of a warning as a sight) which is also well into the "dazzler" range... (in Close Quarters Fighting bright green lasers can be used to "flash" the hostile's eyes disorienting them and resulting in safer target neutralization). So of course the best thing to do is to put it in a Star Trek phaser toy.


We have attempted to range it, but haven't really found a maximum range, we just know it's at the very least beyond visual range.

One of our neighbours has a fairly powerful (i.e. illegal to buy, but not to own) green laser, which he's mounted onto a telescope. It's calibrated to point precisely at what you're looking at. It doesn't get much use because of aircraft reasons, but it's pretty magnificent.
