I mean for the love of Baal, people have been worried about this sort of crap for generations saying how "low class" art is entering and becoming too important, and always, ALWAYS its people who think of themsevles as the sole arbiters of what is good that do this.
Wether wealthy moralists or annoying arthouse types, theres always been a kind of handwringing "oh god there ENJOYING this" kind of fascination with what people are doing and somehow saying that it will cripple us "as a culture" is one of the most asinine and self righteous things you can talk about. Its the equivilent of people complaining about Muslim influences in the world, would you accept those accusations with the same nods of "he has a point" that so many people looking at this (and considering themselves unaffected by the "common herd" ideas) will do?
Sorry to rant, but this sort of thing really gets me irritated.

There are reasons I posted it in the pointless thread and not in Discuss. Also, I am one of those people that wastes time doing arbitrary things on the Internet, I'm not putting myself above what the artist is claiming. I mean, I'm posting shit in a pointless thread on an internet forum for a web comic? Also, the artist just interpreted what Neil Postman wrote in 1985.

Urgh, sorry have a hangover and feeling crotchety, so I was more disagreeing with the sentiment expressed within the comic rather than anything in particular, sorry to give that impression.

Interestingly enough, the book this claims to be drawn from is quite good. It's been a while since I last read it, but I seem to remember that the author's argument is not about 'high art' vs. 'entertainment', and indeed is not really directed against entertainment at all, but is instead directed primarily against the trivialization of important public discourse by television news. If you're interested in these kind of debates (which, from your rather strong reaction, it seems you are) you would probably find the book very interesting, even if you don't agree with the argument being made.
