This is actually common practice. While not usually as dramatic as this, it's certainly not uncommon to have a bunch of extra cabs (with no speakers in them) sitting on the stage while you just put a mic or direct box on the one that you actually want to amplify through the PA, sometimes not even the one they make the giant stacks of. Why let it be known that your "trademark sound" comes from a Line 6 POD instead of a wall of speakers?
