Grown-up C&H comics are what I like to call "internet dick tugs". Internet dick tugs are things that pander to nerd culture in the most cynical/rote manner possible, either going for James L. Brooks treacle or comically self-serious miserablism. See also - the billions of fake comic crossovers, "alternate perspectives" on Watchmen, comics about the death of beloved dogs.
