It is a give and take thing - the employees will do their job properly and be polite to the customers if the customers are polite enough to put things back at least in the general vicinity of where they came from, and not steal things. If that part is missing, the employees are allowed to spit feathers. It's in the contract.

This. I don't like it when stupid fuckers screw up their computers doing something asinine and then lie straight to my face when I aswk them how it happened, but it's what I get paid to do, so I say something like "oh man, I hate it when that happens" or some other bullshit banter and I get on with my job, because hey, it's a job!

I can't tell if you were using this as a genuine example or a slightly hyperbolic analogy of "what you wouldn't do" vs "what you would do", but this shit happens all the fucking time. And yeah, while with web design your clients won't take out bits of code, they will change their mind at the most inopportune moments and make ridiculous demands. I'm not sure if I really have a point. Probably it is just that people are inconsiderate fucks and any job that involves dealing with them (i.e. most) is going to involve having to put up with their bullshit. Unfortunately retail just has a higher turnover of self-entitled dicks on any given day than most other situations.
