I was under the evident misapprehension that it was only on waistcoats of the english (not the french) style that it was deemed a faux pas to button the bottom button, because of the obesity of a certain english royal. After he became so rotund as to be unable to button his waistcoat all the way down, his court all wore the last button undone, so as to ingratiate themselves with, and spare the offense of, the corpulent king. Guys, can I ask why you don't button up the bottom button of a suit jacket? On three button suits it's fine but I often think on suits with only two buttons it looks dumb. Why do you still hold to this? Is there a practical reason?

There is a practical reason because single breasted jackets are not cut to have the bottom button buttoned the fabric becomes stretched and looks dumb.

As an aside, single breasted jackets are never buttoned while sitting, while double breasted jackets are never unbuttoned, even when sat.

I think the bottom button makes it a bit more sharp looking, unless I have a big belly at the time. If I like the shirt I am wearing a lot I will unbutton my jacket to sit, if not, I will undo the bottom button to sit and re-do it to stand unless it is a lot of ups and downs.
