I'm at my sister's house for the week.  She lives outside a smallish town about 2 hours from me.  Here I am in her yard:

Technically only the mowed part is her property.  The un-mowed part used to be a public golf corse, but it closed down so now it is just a meadow.

(Also, look at those trees! Autumn is the best!)

This isn't exactly a photo, per se, but it's me!

I finally have decent video of myself spinning fire on YouTube ... it's from last night.  It's only 1:45 worth of video, but the quality's reasonable and I didn't make any major mistakes.  It would've been nice to have music or drumming, and it would've been nice to have seen the entirety of the burn rather than a little segment of it, but I'm still happy.

Back in February, my grandma had a heart attack. What I didn't mention in that post was that it was on Scout Sunday, which is when all the people involved in local troops go to churches and celebrate being in Scouting. When she had the heart attack, 7 Scouters (leaders) stepped in and took control of the situation, moving all the surrounding people away, calling 911, etc. One of them did CPR for 12 minutes straight, before the ambulance arrived. In the end my grandma miraculously pulled through, no doubt thanks to the quick action of the Scouters. There was hardly a way to thank them, so my family contacted Scouts Canada and got them medals and we had a big ceremony! Sorry for the long story but it kinda has to be explained.

The tall man with the red scarf is the one who did CPR. His name is Steve and is very very nice.

This is most of my family and the Scouters. I think we will keep in touch, which would be nice.

So I went and climbed Mt. Washington with a couple of friends on Sunday. It was pretty awesome! Semi-Photodump inc.

It started off like a normal Autumn hike through the woods

Then it got a bit more winter-y.

Then it got a lot more winter-y.

Which was okay! We were too hot at the bottom anyway, and it was very beautiful. We got to see lots of waterfalls, some bigger

some smaller.

Finally, we reached where we had to stop. We had sadly gotten a late start (drove up from Boston), and had to turn back on account of time/darkness. But it was fun! We got to be silly and frolic in the snow, and I'm looking forward to winter again now.

And we made it back and didn't die of frostbite etc.

I was a Scout leader for years, and this is exactly the type of thing I would expect Scouters to do.  It's what we train for.

I know that Scouts have gotten some bad press lately, some of it deserved, I guess, but I still believe that Scouts do far more good than harm.  Far more.

No! We are hardy peoples of the North, we fear no winter.

Honestly we'd been working so hard getting up the mountain, we weren't even really cold until we stopped moving. We actually stripped down more and more the further up we went, I did most of the climb in just underarmor/a flannel shirt, jeans and gloves.

It was kind of surreal really. I hadn't even seen snow since April, and it's been pretty warm in Boston for the most part. And then we woke up one morning, drove a little bit, and then all of a sudden we're climbing through Narnia.

On a semi-related note (I'd put this in the blog thread but it'd be apropros of nothing whilst this thread is relevant), last night I was walking home and passed a guy wearing nothing but a woman's swimming costume, being supported by a friend wearing not much more, because the swimming costume guy had hypothermia. Actually had full-blown hypothermia, in the centre of town. What stupid fucker goes out in mid-October when the temperature is hovering around freezing? I just couldn't believe no one, not one single person, said to him "oh hey, that might not be such a good idea!".

Wow.

What I did last weekend I'm the one with the square brown shield:

Shit... Scandinavian LARP weapons have zero padding next to those "weapons"..

What does that say about us then?

We don't use padding at all. I don't have any recent photos of actual fighting, but we do some other awesome stuff. Like when two in the club married. I'm the guy without a helmet (because I'm lazy and didn't bring it). We lowered the swords just before they had gotten all the way through, and they had to kiss to be allowed to pass on. That was pretty awesome.

If you think fighting each other with blunt metal weapons is bad, think of the Poles - certain groups there operate with the rule set "you loose when it hurts so much you have to lie down". In the big Viking festivals in Denmark, people from the entire Europe show up, and when Scandinavians and Poles clash, we're supposed to use our rule sets, but you kinda have to strike them at least ten times before they admit defeat. Of course, they have this funny idea that proper vikings are honorable, and only strike each others heads and shoulders, so they don't wear anything to protect their crotches. We have a culture of not striking each other hard, but even the simplest spear tap to some guy's unprotected balls...

^^

Yeah, but do you guys wear actual armor for the most part?
There isn't actually any armor requirements in what I do, so, getting hit with a full swing of a metal weapon is going to break some bones. Generally, having your bones broken turns you off of the sport. (Yeah, we call it a sport, it's less of a LARP more of a fight)

Do you mean in general, or A&W's specifically? Because yes I have had so much poutine (including from Smoke's, Oh My Holy Shit), but not from A&W, because their onion rings are obviously the optimal choice for every situation.

He ate it because it tasted better than the food at A&W.

Overall impression of Vancouver: Not all it's cracked up to be, but really quite a lot of attractive young women.

Au contraire, my main problem is that Vancouver is not near dang mountainous and frostbitten enough. My heart is in the Rockies, dear tania, and no amount of steam-driven clocks or homeless people can ever wrest it away. There really are lots of pretty girls though. Like, it's crazy.

Addendum: Fuck the beaches.

Having been in denial of my own latent thespianism for years, I have finally given in and am applying for acting courses at Bristol Old Vic, RADA, etc. A part of me knows for sure that what with having no Drama A-level and there being about 10000 applicants for each place, my chances are slim to none. However, I figure a good photo can't hurt those skinny chances. Trouble is, I can't for the life of me take a good picture of myself, being exceedingly unphotogenic - c'est la vie. Still, after a hefty photo session involving a lot of desk lamp positioning, I've whittled down the number of possible portraits to seven. Help me choose!

My dear man, it is good to see you smouldering out of the sceen at me. I actually like the one you posted on the page the most, but the one where you are looking out of the picture with your hands together (number six I think) is also good.

Amusingly, when I loaded that one, a Dolmio advert also loaded next to it. I had not realised how much you look like the Dolmio man.

Don't use the frowny ones, I would say, or the one where you are mostly just shadow. The others are all fine but I like the thoughtful ones best.

I bought a Julie Ruin t-shirt - Julie Ruin was a radical feminist punk band fronted by super excellent person Kathleen Hanna, formerly of Bikini Kill. I only realised after buying it that they print their t-shirts on American Apparel shirts :psyduck:

Do you have anything in the way of a "sad clown" style?
