Also it's kind of depressing seeing a guy go half-way towards dressing up. Hey, guy, you're probably an okay guy, but think about wearing something other than jeans! You're all nice on top, why don't you put more care into what you wear on your legs! (This goes for guys in general.)

(Actually the worst thing is seeing a guy out on a date, where the girl's got all fancied up in a nice dress and everything, and the guy's just wearing jeans and sneakers and because he's put a shirt with buttons on he thinks he's dressed up.)

I frequently wear button ups with jeans because it is a slightly more fun alternative to a t-shirt. Plus it hides my gut (which is funny, because I'm pretty skinny, but I've got a bit of a beer gut). It is certainly a casual look. Hell, sometimes I'll wear a button-up with a loosely tied tie (half windsor, too), a sport coat, jeans and sneakers. I cannot stress that this is a casual look for going to bars/playing shows. Dressing up means that I wear real slacks and nice shoes, and tuck my shirt in.

It always makes me really sad. Usually that sort of guy does not even offer to pay for the girl on the first date either. I am perhaps a little old-fashioned in that regard.

I'd like to heartily second this. Tangentially related to this: Every week the local newspaper publishes photos from various high schools' Year 12 balls. It is always very cringeworthy to see some very elegant looking women on the arms of peach-fuzz adorned boys in stupid fedoras and other novelty formalwear bullshit.

SNAPPY

Went to FL to get my truck topper. 20 hrs of driving with my kid. Bonding.
Got a call from my wife on the way back. Our water line asploded. We've been w/o water for a couple days. Waiting for a plumber to come fixerate my pipes. So the above is much happier times than say 2 hours later when I got that call. Or 24 hours later when I was crippling myself digging up the damned tree roots with a pick axe. Today I cannot even sign my name.

Yeah, what Katie said. It's really not that confusing. For one thing, offering to pay is a slightly ritualized gesture in our culture. Offering to pay demonstrates that yes, you are aware that there are (perhaps outmoded) dating protocols that consider this the Proper Thing and as long as you don't make a big deal out of it, it's a nice gesture. Meanwhile women appreciate that you're trying to be nice, but letting someone pay for you seems kind of like a spoiled person thing to do so they often decline or insist upon paying for the next time out. As long as everybody realizes that nobody is entitled to anything but common decency from the other party, it's all good.

I've paid for my mom before, but usually that's only dinner or I'll buy movie tickets if she buys the snacks or vice versa. That's about it though. And if someone offers to pay, I usually do the "I'll pay next time," thing. Those are polite. Downright insisting to pay, unless it's like a birthday or something, is actually kind of rude, I think.

I like smiling at people who walk past at work; normally people get a little awkward and look away, but some people smile back or even wave. It is a simple way to pass the time when the place is empty and I have nothing to to.
