As Zombiedude pointed out, cupcakes are usually easier to bake than cakes. With cakes, temperature is more critical, and you can end up with the outside burned or dried out before the inside is done. With cupcakes, each is its own cake, but obviously with much less volume, so it's a lot easier to get the consistency right.

Also, cupcakes are more convenient. If you go to a party or something and bring a cake, you also need something to carve it up and serve it with, and plates or something. Bring a batch of cupcakes, and you can just pass them out. Everyone gets their own cake.

All the cupcakes I ever make are dense and buttery and rich as I can manage. Sure the cake's smaller but that no reason not to make it just as bad for you.
